Nearly half of all under-25s do not use condoms with new partners, according to a new survey.

The report by the National Aids Trust also found that more than 200 young people questioned rarely or never used a condom.

The finding has prompted the body to call on the government to introduce condom advertising on TV and radio before the nine o'clock watershed.

The Trust is also lobbying for condom awareness to form an essential part of compulsory education in all schools.

The call comes during National Condom Week.

Wake-up call

Deborah Jack, chief executive of the National Aids Trust, said: "In National Condom Week, the British public need a wake-up call on condom use.

"Too many people don't know the basic facts on how condoms prevent a sexually transmitted infection such as HIV.

"Too many people are inconsistent in how they use condoms and too many people give up on condoms in a relationship without a health check-up, thus possibly harming their health or that of their sexual partner.

  • Most young people believe if it is their first or second time they have nothing to worry about! Education is a must!

  • Not using a condom when you are having anal or vaginal intercourse with someone until you are sure of their status is completely foolish. To seriously know a person's status you have to have a long record of testing. The virus can be in the body undetected for a few years, although most people serum convert within a year. So as a rule of thumb, a year is not a long time to wait to have unprotected sex with someone who has had multiple unprotected sexual partners.

  • If you are both virgins, and you are sure about your feelings and the responsibilities of what engaging in unprotected sex could mean then by all means go for it, why use a condom on your first time? You only live once!

Whatever they need to do to make kids stop having unwanted children, they should do... Let them think: minutes of pleasure better then a life time of regret?
  • Still think teaching abstinence is the only viable option? All intentions of not having sex hold up until these girls are standing face to face with the decision. If the message is, 'if you're going to have sex, wrap it up,' they'll be prepared for it. Hoping and praying that they make the decision not to do it every time they get together is foolish and...and...wait for it..........delusional.

  • this may sound stupid, but in some way those who get an STD by no wearing a condom are kinda killing their partner. that´s homicide guys.

plus, what´s so wrong about wearing it?

  • Britney Spears and Paris Hilton tell teens that is O.K. to have sex. Men, all you need is alcohol. Women, all you is a dick.

  • We heard this message for so many years now.

Being crasy is doing something agin and again and expect a change.

Condom is and has been the wrong message. If you cannot control your penis, who is in charge of your life ?

We should add a huge tax on condoms telling people that promiscuous sex will put their life at risk with or without condom.

Do not send me the bill. This is a civil right issue. Why do we have to pay the health bills of irresponsible people

  • Does anyone else find it interesting that you can legally have sex at 17 (at least in New York), but can't buy contraception until you are 18? So you can have all the sex you want, but god forbid you would lose your innocence by being exposed to those immoral locations where you would buy contraception.

  • Is this possibly related to "abstinence only" sex education? Hello? Get yer ass to planned parenthood. They'll give you a whole bag fulla condoms for free. You don't need to be 18, you just got to use them!
    cheyroze
  • I think it bothers most women around those ages when a guy states that he DOESN'T like wearing one because he "can't feel anything".
    felixred
  • Cheyroze- The state of California has refused federal money for abstinence education since the beginning

There was a report not long ago that 25% of teenagers over there have STDs.

It is costing the state of Caliornia a lot of $$$$.

If you still think a piece of latex is the solution, be my guest, just don't send me the bill

  • Christian conservatives have to realize that most kids are going to have sex... no matter how bad you tell them it is. So why not teach them to be safe, not just at a school level, but at a family and even church level?
    xenomode
  • Forget the taxes. Condoms should be free from the government.
    dontipo
  • If people are so worried, stop having sex you idiots! Ha ha
    Kallico75
  • Xenomode- This is a constant debate that will never be solve.

Parents are ultimately responsable for educating their children, not the churches, not the schools and certainly not the government.

Parents have to protect their children daily against a destructive culture. It is very hard.

My 3 children are not having sex. One is now happily married.

You cant be successful when you are defeated even before your start.

In every high school they have signs "Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself'.

In every church they have signs "With God everything is is posssible".

Schools real focus is to teach our children how to make money in the future.

Education should be first about learning to create an ideal family.

Our priorities are wrong and then we believe a piece of latex will protect our children.

    How stupid it is !!!!

  • how about condoms are just now forced upon students. When i was in high school, that is when they just started informing us that we can get free condoms in the nurses office.

how about condoms are giving in physical education or guidance counslers are taught how to appropriately hand out condoms to students with out giving them any type of judgmental lectures.

Dontipo- If you want to give free condoms then increase the medical insurance cost to those who have STDs.

Stop sending the bills to the rest of the population.

Unless there is a price to pay for irresponsible behaviors, nothing will change.

If you drive recklessly, you get tickets. If you have accidents, your car insurance goes up.

Free condoms are just encouragement to sleep around and be promiscuous.

If Obama wants real change in healthcare, he should do that

  • Not every family teaches there child about the birds and the bees i think it would be an investment in America if the schools or some one would step in and tell them like it is. Abstance doesn't work. We all dont have the moral compass as others do. So there should be more options avalible in teaching our kids about sex.

  • If its a long term relationship, as in years, then it may not be needed. But there is to much to lose, diseases, pregnancies, and trouble you dont want.

  • Important Story. We can all relate. Lets keep it fun lets keep it safe, just slip one on. Nuff Said.
    FaceTheWorld
  • muckraker- Once you tell parents that the schools will do it for them, then they will be to happy to do nothing and leave it to Board of education.

We have to know what we want. Passing the buck does not work. I kept my kids away from public schools because I did not trust or agree what they teach.

These are my children !!! If a parent has a hard time, he or she can ask someone with similar values to help them. Their church community, small groups etc.....

The state is not supporting family value. It support the no fault divorce. If someone want to raise children, it takes a huge commiment to protect them from the culture around.

    It is a sad situation

  • We need to teach real sex ed in our schools, they do it in every other western nation, Why not the US?

  • There's "ads" for KY products so, why not condom related Public Service Announcements?
Oh. Right. There's no profit in "PSA's".

  • You cannot educate someone that cannot control himself.

Even if you write on a pack of cigarettes: Guaranted to kill you, some people will still smoke.

It is the same with promiscuity. Most STDs are self inflected diseases including aids.

Condoms are the kiss of death and a damage control proposition to a failed education.

Each one of us needs to win the battle over his or her own body instead of believing that slick politicians will change the world with somebody else money.

All the diets have a 30 days money back guarantee, Why are so many people overweight ?

Americans have to grow up and stop going around saying: "give me, give me ".

  • If children were properly taught how to use a condom, and that it should always be used. The cost of treatment for people who have an STD would be on the decline, teen pregnancy which costs everyone a large amount of money from their taxes by paying into welfare would be on the decline.

Absitinence only education is the bane of teen troubles, teach all forms of safety practices. By all means encourage absitince, and teach that masturbation is not bad, but also teach how to properly defend yourself against disease and pregnancy. Parents need to really step up on this but unfortunetly many of them are not properly educated to educate their children and this is where the problem lies in my opinion.

No one is going to stop having sex, it is to deeply ingrained in our minds at a biological level, you would literally have to brainwash people to make them feel otherwise and that possibly would not be enough.

  • People are going to have sex, were're wired for it and there are to many parents whose are afraid to talk to their kids about it, so the board of ed. has to do something. Abstinence-only programs don't work because teens will have sex anyway. The best system so far has to be ABCs, (Abstinence, Be faithfull, Condoms). It encourages abstience and discourages promiscuity, but it also teaches facts.

  • soul ill-

The following statistics are from the fact sheet "The Truth About Latex Condoms," developed by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS).

    1. Condoms are 98% effective when used correctly.
    2. The average failure rate for condoms is 12%: reflective of people who do not use them properly or do not use them every time they have intercourse.
    3. Laboratory tests show that neither sperm, which has a diameter of 3 microns, nor STD-causing organisms, which are a quarter to a ninth the size of sperm, can penetrate an intact latex condom.
    4. If there is a leak in more than 4 per 1,000 condoms, the entire lot (approximately 5,000) is discarded.

Know the facts before you make asumptions, Mr.KissOfDeath

  • Condoms are way too expensive; I would love to know the true cost of a pack of condoms. Free condoms do not promote promiscuity etc etc, this story alone proves that people are perfectly happy being promiscuous without condoms. I have yet to meet a girl who said she hadn't had more sexual partners because condoms were so expensive.

Abstinence???? Is that the answer, we all see what priests have done with their abstinence, no thanks, people who don't have sex are just weird, to me anyway. They have this little holier than thou attitude I find just a little annoying, as if anyone cares that they are not having any fun. To any kids reading this we all know you are gonna have sex, just wear a damn condom it doesn't feel as good but it's better than dying or having a kid.

  • VitaminB2- I apologize. I meant to write "The condom and hook-up culture is the kiss of death.

I agree the ABC appoach from Uganda while it is constantly ridiculed and rejected has been effective in that country. It starts with the right order.

Abstinence first;fidelity second; and then condom 3rd.

The so called comprehensive education in the USA is against ABC and has not worked for over 40 years.

As long as we expect more virtues from condoms than teenagers, we would be crasy to expect a different outcome. I think we should look at the lifestyle of the educators first.

Abstinence before marriage programs have been much more effective than you give it credit even in this sleaze infected environment.

Why would so many people be against teaching healthy relationships unless they were brainwashed.

America spend 12 X more for condom type propaganda than healthy preparation for marriage even against the desire from parents and the craving for this type of education from teenagers.

That is criminal. It is a conspiracy of death (much more than a kiss)

Obama is not going to change a thing. His platform is for it.

  • Analysis of federally funded abstinence-only curricula found that over 80 percent of curricula supported by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services contained false, misleading, or distorted information about reproductive health. Specifically, they conveyed:
    False information about the effectiveness of contraceptives;
    False information about the risks of abortion;
    Religious beliefs as scientific fact;
Stereotypes about boys and girls as scientific fact; and
Medical and scientific errors of fact.

There is so much political correctness that put our children in danger. I am very suspiscious of the federal governmentand the court even I know that there must be some good people there. When they will take some of the responsibility for the mess in this country, I may have more respect.

Look at what these 4 judges did in California. It is total heresy

One of my source is Freeteen USA. I know these people and trust them very much

    www.freeteenusa.org

They are in big demand and are usually overbooked .
