Starbucks logo under fire: shows partially covered breasts
A Christian group based in San Diego called The Resistance says the logo looks like a naked woman with her legs spread like a prostitute.
The Resistance is calling for a national boycott of Starbucks.
Starbucks says the logo is appropriate. It'll be around for a few weeks.
The logo is based on a 16th century Norse woodcut of a two-tailed mermaid.

Mermaids need love too.
The truly obscene thing at Starbucks is the price they charge for their coffees.

I guess since we already took care of problems such as POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT, WAR, HIGH COST OF FOOD, etc...this is the right time to take care of little mermaid's breasts!
-
LOFL What Christians can imagine they sea in a picture is quite comical
"a prostitute with her legs spread out, bare breasted and tempting....oooh that's sinful!" (said snottily)

A Coffee logo what a dilemma. I guess they cant let it go huh.

Thought that having crappy automatic machines, old grounds or looking like Peet's Coffee brown logo was already worst than prostitutes.

OLD NEWS. Prudish McPrudester already raised a huff about the SBux logo when the original first came out decades ago. They should be more concerned with REAL women icons (ahem...ParisLindseyBritney) spreading their legs for the paparazzi.

I like it, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the symbol. Leave it to some retarded christen to see the devil and start making a big deal out of nothing. These people need to find something better to complain about. Really, shouldn't they be praising Jesus somewhere . Do they have nothing better at all to do. This is one more example on why these quacks need to be locked up. There was no reference to a prostitute till these resistance losers made one. Do people still listen to these Christian activist groups any more? I am personally really tired of hearing about these god freaks and how everything is a slight against god. When will religion finally die and leave us intelligent people alone. There was absolutely no problem till they made one. She could be naked and no one would care. Theres nothing more beautiful then the form of a healthy women. I personally think I don't see it in enough places. Why do christens hate women so much. Women are really the coolest thing since sliced bread. These people need to hurry up and die already. I'm sick of hearing about there problems. Now your sick of hearing about mine, so I digress.

Isn't that their original logo? It's based on a 16th C wood cutting, I believe.
Mermaids of the world, unite against this persecution!

Ahhhhh BOOBEEEZZZZ!!!! RUN!
Seriously, and these wankers of the right think they're the ones tough and smart enough to deal with global terrorism? And they can't handle a illustrated half-boob?

Here is some more info! Click on the link!!
I don't understand why they changed it in the first place.

I think the particular Christians who are offended by this are so sexually repressed that they end up projecting their own sinful desires onto the image and see a sexual element in an otherwise innocent picture.
I just see a two tailed mermaid, nothing more, nothing less...

What a joke. I think this Christian group has way too much time on their hands. I am looking at my Starbucks coffee as I write this and I don't see the big deal. Her breasts are tiny. If she looked like a slut, as the Christians claim, she would have huge breasts, or at least some implants. Isn't there something bigger for them to complain about?
-
I go to starbucks every couple days and I didn't even notice the drawing had tits, but not that that bigoted group of christians pointed out I cannot stop thinking about how much I want to fuck that paper cup. I don't know how I'm going to be able to function with this smut on my desk at work. I just want to pull it out and stick my penis in this hot cup of coffee and fuck it like it has never known.
The worst part of this story is we are giving it the time of day. It is like the problem child who is starved for attention. This is just a way to get their group in the media and try to get a few more members. That is the only sin I see hear.
Less we forget that adam and eve were nude.

I have an issue with the logo, I think the breasts shouldn't covered at all! LOL
It is art - historical art at that borrowing from an older time still.
As much as I dislike starducks for not recycling, for underpaying their servers and for supporting the murderous ways of the Israeli military - I think the image is harmless enough - not the greatest image artistically speaking, not the best representation of the beautiful female form, but harmless enough.
I have personally boycotted starducks for the reasons cited above, costing starducks at least several hundred dollars in lost revenue to date.
I'll add, that I've not spent more than $30.00 at a Walfart since they've come to my state (CA) - a long standing boycott costing them thousands and thousands of dollars.

"It’s extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves Slutbucks."
This is hilarious! There are bigger issues to worry about. I might as well go to Starbucks right now to support the boycott against mindless boycotts. .

I really just think it's not a big deal.

Really... they are not against Starbucks because of the anti-competitive tactics, labor disputes, ethos water controversy or their minimal efforts in fair trade coffee?.. but their logo...of a mer-woman...with boobs...like all woman have?
There must not be any movies to boycott right now.

Fine, if they find it offensive then let them take their business elsewhere. Somehow I predict my coffee will taste better without them in the shop.

Starbucks' logo come from the same artistic line as Botticelli's Venus. There is something to be said for a little bit of art in everyday life. I wouldn't want to lose that.
On the other hand, intentional use of nudity in commercial settings is always (at least) a subliminal use of sex to sell their product. It happens all too frequently in our so-called enlightened society. I certainly don't favor that either.
The protesting group's argument loses my consideration when they call the mermaid a prostitute. That reminds me very strongly of similar fundamentalist Moslem attacks. For example, a woman in Tehran wearing makeup will be called a prostitute. Fundamentalist Christians often present as America's Taliban.
The struggle today is not between Christianity and Islam. That's what the fundies of both sides want you to think. The real struggle today is between fundamentalism of all kinds and the middle way, between absolutism and relativism. Or, if you will, between perpetual warfare and lasting peace.
Peace,
