Survivors of the recent China earthquakes fled their homes yesterday following warnings that a huge lake is about to burst its banks in Beichuan. The military has been ordered to evacuate everybody, including rescue workers.
The lake was one of several formed by landslides which blocked river flows.
Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, said yesterday that 33 people were rescued from the rubble in the area, which was affected badly as it is near the epicentre of the earthquake. One young man was dug up after being buried for 104 hours, and the army aided 18 scientists trapped in a forest in Mianzhu.

This is tragic - if the dam bursts, how many earthquake survivors still to be rescued will drown?

Rescue efforts are resuming in Beichuan in China, after the entire city was evacuated amid fears that it could be engulfed by a river bursting its banks.
The city was reduced to ruins by Monday's earthquake, but efforts are still going on to find and dig survivors from the rubble.
But the search was halted on Saturday as rumours of a flood saw a stampede of people fleeing to higher ground.
