Ellen DeGeneres to wed after gay marriage ruling

Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres plans to marry her long-time partner, actress Portia de Rossi, after a California court ruling allowing gay marriage.

To wild cheers and a standing ovation, DeGeneres said she was very excited at Thursday's ruling by the California Supreme Court overturning a state ban on gay marriage.

DeGeneres did not mention de Rossi, 35, but pictures showed the former "Ally McBeal" actress in the audience, smiling and applauding.

DeGeneres and de Rossi have been a familiar couple in Hollywood for about four years, appearing at red carpet events together. DeGeneres previously had a relationship with actress Anne Heche.

  • I always believed that everyone that wanted to get married should be treated equally.

    I wonder if that gives them the chance to be equally miserable also? What will the divorce rate be among same sex marriages?

    Divorce is what ruins the institution of marriage, not gay couples. It would certainly reflect well on same sex marriages if they could prove the fundamentalists wrong and that they took it more seriously by staying together.

    But unfortunately the outlook isn't all that good, especially with the track record of Hollywood couples of any sex, so I hope Ellen gets a prenup just to CYA.

Thank you for doing this California, lets just cross our fingers and hope other states will follow and decide laws based on Christian Values shouldn't apply to those who don't believe in them or that people should have the rights to the pursuit of happiness and not oppressive close minded politicians that are so obsessed with pushing their own ideologies they have forgotten what democracy means.

  • For anyone who is against this or says that marriage is between a man and a woman, this is for you.

    Marriage, if viewed as something between a man and a woman, is a religious joining. What is the word there that should stand out? If you thought "religious" then you are correct. Congress nor government shall make a law favoring one religion or belief system over another. So, if you want to argue that marriage is between a man and a woman then you are arguing that marriage is a religious concept not a legal one. In that case I will accept that homosexual marriage is not legal if you accept that married couples should not have shared benefits, visitation rights, and many other legal benefits and/or rights that are provided by government law.

    That said, I offer my blessings and hope that they have a long and happy marriage.
