Al Gore set to profit from sustainable and 'green' technologies

Weeks before announcing a $300-million, three-year advertising campaign to raise awareness about global warming, Al Gore was conducting a slide show for a group of investors in Monterey, Calif., touting companies such as Bloom Energy, Amryis , Mascoma and other firms that are not household names -- yet.

These bio-fuel and green technology firms could be poised to take off, Gore told his audience.

"Here are just a few of the investments I personally think make sense," he said during the March 1 presentation. "I have a stake in these so I'll have a disclaimer there." (See Video)

Gore's admitted stake in those companies comes from his partnership in the venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). Gore joined the firm last November, forging a partnership between KPCB and the London-based Generation Investment Management, a firm Gore chairs, and which steers investments in green and "sustainable" companies.

This month, KPCB announced it has invested $500 million into start-up "green growth" companies, and another $700 million into more established greentech, information technology and life science ventures.

The seed money is intended to "grow" the companies so they can be publicly traded. Both funds are closed to further investment. Last week, Generation Investment Management reportedly closed a $683-million "Climate Solutions Fund" to further investment.

The firms, with similar goals, differ in that GIM focuses mostly on public equities, while KPCB focuses on startup or expanding companies that haven't gone public yet.

But without government action on climate change, some business analysts say green companies backed by KPCB are either unlikely to be profitable or that their growth will be slow.

To Gore's critics, his financial stake in businesses that could profit from government policies designed to fight global warming demonstrates a motivation other than a selfless desire to protect the planet.

Gore has lobbied Congress and state governments to enact bolder environmental regulations. Gore's defenders counter that he and his partners are simply looking at companies that will have long-term sustainability during the "climate crisis."

"There are a bunch of folks that stand to make real money, who have invested a lot in companies that are not worth real money until the agenda that this ad campaign is advocating is achieved," Chris Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free-enterprise think tank, said in an interview.

Companies in the KPCB portfolio, as start-up companies, might be in greater need of a helping hand from government policy changes, but the larger, more established firms in the GIM portfolio also could benefit if the government manipulates the current market by mandating alternative fuels or imposing a cap and trade system.

As a private citizen, Gore is not required to publicly disclose how much of his personal fortune is invested in the venture capital firm. KPCB spokeswoman Brianna Woon declined to say how much Gore had invested in the firms, and she said the firms couldn't comment at this time on whether the greentech companies can succeed without government action.

  • More power to him, he's saving the Climate and getting money doing it.

  • You're not the least bit skeptical that he's fear-mongering to personally enrich himself?

  • If we do it right we all profit. Isn't it better than having leaders who were on the boards of major Oil Companies? All renewable energy policy is domestic and entails less pollution, and have a more sustainable model. Lets keep in mind oil companies don't even have profit sharing for those record windfalls and they currently recieve 18 billion dollars in tax subsidies despite thier profits. The only people who are the "special interests" in domestic energy are regular utility workers, farmers, construction workers, and the average consumer feeling the pain at the pump and the grocer.

  • Either someone profits from raping the environment or we all profit from clean energy, no?

  • Fearmongering? Have you done any research into the multitude of scientific corroboration regarding climate change? Are you not paying attention to the news? There's plenty of it here on that from many scientific sources if you wish to look for it.

Funny how when his ad campaign through the Alliance for Climate Protection begins these types of stories are brought out. I would even suggest if you have a little extra lying around and want to invest that solar technologies look like a good bet about now... How do you expect these technologies to have a chance of making it to market anytime soon since the government only subsidizes COAL and NUCLEAR and OIL to rape this planet with?

  • If Al Gore wanted to stop global warming he'd focus on ending the war. Dropping bombs everywhere, fueling talks and the energy used to power the 700 plus US military bases around the world probably do more to damage the environment than all of us combined, but you don't hear AL Gore's calling to stop the war. Hmmm...

  • You can bet any profit from his investments will go to helping save the planet you live on. He doesn't personally need the money, has never been about grubbing for money has given so much of his personal wealth to environmental projects. You should do some research before you start making accusations. I'm embarrassed for you.
  • It's not my accusation, Al Gore HIMSELF admits he's got a financial stake in the companies set to profit from green hype.

    we all know this

    it is not news

it is not a secret, because there is nothing shameful about it

if I had the money I would invest in the GREEN industry too!!

say hello to the future, bay-beh!

i'm currently studying to be able to develop alternative sources of energy, 10, 20 more years they won't be alternative anymore!

    :)

  • profiting is not bad

what counts is what you do of the money you make

pay attention to what AL does with his "profits"

  • Al Gore, or any other American should be judged by their actions, not spin, spun to discredit their actions. Al Gore does not have to walk away from investing to prove anything to anyone.

Leading investors into investing in green is good leadership for American investors. I hope they invest in products and equipment that can be manufactured in America and help the environment and American industry, all at the same time.

  • All about profit! What happened to philanthropy?

  • Well, you obviously are so much into attacking him that you haven't paid attention to him for the past five years. He was one of the first to call for this war to never even start, and has spoken out about it ever since. What are you doing? There must have been a mass emailing today. This same article has already been put here more than once today.

  • ha! i thought doing your part to try n save humanity was philanthropic

    philanthropy...

to engage in it is a very personal choice

    and before anyone passes judgement

please pay attention on how those 'profits' are used

  • A carbon tax is just another way to drive the middle class into poverty. The real environmental threats aren't even being addressed. Admit it! What about depleted uranium? What about anti-depressants and other chemicals in the water supply? What about bombs being dropped everywhere? Nothing about that!

  • one task at a time

one man can't 'fix' it all for you...

Gore is working on the most ugent issue concerning humanity today

  • maasanova "It's not my accusation, Al Gore HIMSELF admits he's got a financial stake in the companies set to profit from green hype."

He admits nothing. Admitting sounds like he did something wrong, or to be ashamed of. He did not. He invested in things that may give your lame butt clean air to breathe. He said that he has invested in it. Ever hear of example? I think he might like to see others invest in similar projects. He can't do it alone. What have you done for the environment? Do you even recycle? Or do you just sit around trying to find fault where there is none?
  • This is beginning to sound like the rhetoric spewed by college students who enlist in Lyndon LaRouche's Al Gore hating brigade.

  • Al Gore is the fox guarding the chicken coup. It's the same as Bush promoting and hyping war in the middle east while members of Congress from both parties set to profit from no bid Pentagon contracts. I don't see any difference.

    By the way...

In 1990 a volcano in the Philippines erupted violently. It was by far one of the biggest explosions of the century. We all have read about how volcanoes let off carbon dioxide, but did you know this… When the volcano erupted, it put more carbon dioxide in the air than all of humanity has ever produced…. More than humans have made since the creation of time. All in just a matter of hours. Look at this picture. See all of this carbon dioxide being put into the air? While, with all of this there was no temperature increase or decrease at all… just some carbon dioxide level changes, but nothing major. If volcanoes put off this much carbon dioxide with no effect, then how could we be doing this? When all this happened, then how could you be persuaded that humans who produce fractions of that amount could impact the environment in fractions of the time. Humans if we tried could not severely impact the environment. It is just too big. Even if we are letting some off, plants and other natural recyclers of Carbon Dioxide are just transforming them to oxygen.

  • Tell you what Messanova, Take your show on the road. Go everywhere post that crap and get laughed out of town for your ignorance. In fact find a crowd and tell them about your suspicions. Maybe at an environmental illness meeting. Yeah, I'd like to see the results of that.
