"Roughly one-fifth of all U.S. households are disconnected from the Internet and have never used e-mail, according to research firm Parks Associates.

A recent phone survey of U.S. households by Parks found 20 million households are without Internet access, approximately 18 percent of all U.S. households.

"Nearly one out of three household heads has never used a computer to create a document," said John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates, in a statement. "These data underscore the significant digital divide between the connected majority and the homes in the unconnected minority that rarely, if ever, use a computer."

Age and education are factors in this divide, Park found. One-half of those who have never used e-mail are over 65, and 56 percent had no schooling beyond high school.

Parks found 7 percent of the 20 million disconnected homes plan to subscribe to an Internet service within the next 12 months. In 2006, Parks found that 29 percent of all U.S. households -- 31 million homes -- did not have Internet access, citing low perceived value of the Internet.

"Many people just don't see a reason to use computers and do not associate technology with the needs and demands of their daily lives," Barrett said."

I've actually overheard an older woman say that she's never used a computer and doesn't see any reason to start now. She seems satisfied with reading newspapers and books. Damn her ancient yet, effective ways.

In 15-20 yrs, after all our old people die, this percentage will drop dramatically. This has happened throughout history with almost every form of technology.

You can only imagine it may one day happen to yourself, with whatever god forsaken technology comes next.

There are other degrees also. How many people have never been out of their hometown? A significant amount

Think of it as evolution in action

Maybe if we had a better Educational System that is more compassionate towards our fellow man/women things would be much better. However I know I lots of people that made a choice to be left alone. I pray and hope they are doing the right things through.

America is home to 7 million illiterates. Twenty seven million Americans' inability to read inhibits them from completing job applications, while 30 million citizens cannot read a simple sentence, let alone write an email. The email usage statistics won't change just because Grandma and Grandpa pass away.

did anyone else see the internet episode of south park? i think we overuse the internet as a whole. i dont play online games, i have one email account and i have had it since 97. i prefer to buy most things in store in person and i dont date online either. i think a lot of people have forgotten to live in the real world. oh and lets not forget what the internet is used for most, porn. maybe im wrong but i see more bad then good. at least here on this site our brains are not going to waste.
