At least 12 people have been killed in the South African city of Johannesburg since Friday in a wave of violence directed at immigrants, police say.

Police have used tear gas and rubber bullets to try to stop gangs of armed youths from attacking foreigners and looting and burning their property.

Five people were killed overnight in the area of Cleveland. Two of them were burned and the others beaten to death.

  • Xenophobia is alive and thriving

  • This is sad, but i really dont think we should get involved.

  • anybody that is "different", always makes a perfect scapegoat. sad.
  • South Africa just seems to always be having a hard time. The hatred and xenophobia have a long history and it is difficult to make change.

  • Most of these people(i use the term loosely) in Africa are violent and racist and its been going on for decades. What is disturbing is our Governments bring these people to our countries with the BS excuse that they want a better life, while lowering our standards and chances of survival.

  • realcanadian, that's a pretty strong generalization you set out there. I would say MOST people are NOT violent and racist. I would say many people are frustrated, though, with their socio-economic situation and a few people choose to point fingers at easy targets (foreigners), rather that at their governments who have the responsibility to make things better for them.

  • Yes, abbym0308, that was strong generalization, but if its true whats the problem? Your right again, most people arent violent and racist, but the disproportional black crime in American cant be spoke of.
I dont like to use the word 'racist' as its only useful when trying to defame others who have a different opinion than you.

  • but to be honest, in a country that already has quite a fragile wall heloding them back from chaos and one thats already been through such hardship as the aparthiet, i think to put huge amounts of strain on them from millions of zimbabwen refugees taking up work thats hard to find anyway... its a tough situation to contemplate, i dont think we can undrstand it, even me, a south african living in the UK

  • I'd be very, very sceptical of what the BBC reports as the reason for any violence - time and again we see the BBC has an agenda, either to cover up something else much more profound, or to create division - the British have never let go of their 'divide and rule' practices and their continuing destabilising role in every single country the BBC reports on.

I used to be a news reporter for the BBC, so I know how it all works from the inside. It's very difficult to do any honest and human-centred reporting. Vested interests shape the political culture in the newsroom that makes journalists understand which kind of stories will go down well and which won't. A friend of mine wouldn't report a mass grave found in Guatemala because she knew the wires wouldn't buy the story from her. She justified her decision saying she had to prioritise her career.

I don't see why current TV would want to re-broadcast BBC news stories, surely people who like watching the BBC can watch it anyway.
