As the Portland Mercury reports, Eric Bryant [a young Oregonian lawyer] was sitting in a Japanese resturant when he saw a cop park under a no parking sign, then come inside, order lunch, and started watching the game on TV. When Bryant asked the officer about his choice in parking spots he acknowledge that he was parked in a no parking zone, but that there was nothing wrong with that as he was a cop. The officer then asked “If someone broke into your house, would you rather have the police be able to park in front of your house or have to park three blocks away and walk there?”

According to Bryant “If he had acknowledged and corrected his error, we could have avoided this whole thing but instead, he kept watching basketball and told me he wasn’t doing anything wrong.” This bothered Eric, so he took the next step and initiated violation proceedings against Officer Stensgaard, racking up $540 in fines for the officer for “illegal parking, illegal stopping, [dis]obeying parking restrictions on state highways, and illegal operation of an emergency vehicle or ambulance” if the officer in [sic] convicted on his court date May 23rd.

  • every job has its perks, if we start fining cops, they will give us more tickets and such.

the problem is draconian laws and traffic design. like short yellow lights, and badly programmed lights.
  • Cops like him put bad reputations for the rest of them, it can be truly sad.

  • Finally, someone with balls. A person that is correct with the action of identifying the situation of higher power.

  • Everyone has to follow the law, no one should be above it.

  • Sometimes I question whether I have the ability to question a so-called authority figure out of the fear of it backfiring. This story gives me further hope to continue my belief that everyone should be held accountable for their actions, despite what position they hold. I wonder why nobody hasn't tried to ticket the president?

  • Notice that the man had a lot of legal knowledge that most of us wouldn't have, he didn't have to hire a lawyer to initiate violation proceedings like the rest of us would have. He was a lawyer.

  • woohoo! havent we all wanted to bust a cop when we catch them doing something illegal? Rock on Mr. Citizen!

  • I'm sure his knowledge of law helps him work up the courage to call out a cop in his blantent lawbreaking. Knowing the full consequences for an action can help someone, or hinder them, in this case it helped him.

  • Thats justice for too long now have officers of the law lived above it, NO ONE is above the law. well... not unless you have money. I cant wait till the 23rd to see if he actually gets penalized.

  • Good story. However will this cops come help him when he calls.

  • True, the cop is right. If it's an emergency, he could park where ever he pleases. But, a basketball game? I'm pretty sure that in this case, it wasn't a life or death situation.

  • I'll see cops all the time speeding, cut through parking lots, turning on their lights a second to run a red light, and then giving us shit for going five over.

Just because you are the law doesn't mean you can brake the law.

  • I totally agree with what he did...

  • Were I live if you did that to San Diego's finest please believe you better be looking over your back but what he did makes up for all the times they pulled me over cuz they say " you fit the description of a robbery". Now I bet that you can guess what my ethnic backgroud is! Because you "Protect and Serve" doesent give you immunity from the law.

  • If only we had a Citizen Review Board to monitor cops along with a Police Auditor to review complaints, procedures and mediation.

Oh wait we do have that, in Eugene, Oregon.

We passed this a few years back to put the police in check while they were under the Mayoral control of Jim Torrey. This guy is a washed up old Fat Cat that still thinks he can do a better job in the is city than our current mayor Kitty Piercy, by hiring more police and enforcing the law.

His reelection campaign posters say "Take our city back" back from the progressives who are putting a campaign of accountability into real world solutions?

What a joke, these fat cats and their sense of entitlement.

Our city responded by creating the Citizen Review Board and Police Auditor in reaction to many things that our police force did or condoned. The main thing was their support of two police officers who were raping and forcing women to have sex with them while on police duty as part of their job to get evidence on drug criminals.

Read all about the Magana case.

  • That lawyer is frickin awesome. It is about time that someone police the police. Too long has it been that if you were a badge you don't have to uphold to the same standards as everyone else! It is time that ALL government agencies be held accountable to the law like everyone else!
