The American people have become so desensitized to murder by the police that it barely causes a ripple in the daily media. Formerly, I asked myself why the police couldn't aim for a knee or an arm or any place non-lethal? I asked that question before I spent years and years teaching and doing research into the nature of man as a behavioral scientist. Now, with little apprehension and even less trepidation I know the answer as to why the police kill instead of maim or otherwise subdue. They're wearing a uniform and a badge for eight out of twenty-four hours a day. At all other times they're no different than you and me - they're subjected to the same laws, morals, and mores as the rest of us. Yet, just think that for those eight, count them, eight precious hours they're freed from the restraints that oppress ordinary citizens living their ordinary lives. Lastly, the cop knows most of all that few if any cops will be punished for killing a citizen who's mentally ill, acting-out, and most certainly could otherwise be subdued. He/she has no reason to do anything other than kill the purported 'culprit' knowing he/she'll get away with it and enhance within themselves that awesome feeling of being oh, so powerful.
