Each year in mid January, 34 year old Salvatore travels from his city life in London into the rugged interior of Sardinia where he was born, in order to celebrate the little known festival of the Mamuthones and the Issohadores. The Mamuthones are mysterious and diabolic figures who represent the dark cold forces of the hard
Sardinian winter. The film will follow Salvatore back to his village where he will become a Mamuthone and act out this ancient rite.

  • This is crazy interesting. It's always fascinating to look into parts of different cultures that really set people apart.

  • it really captures this very strange festival, that i saw a few years ago, and the spirit of the Sardinian people who like to eat and drink together, out in the streets...a precious moment, unaffected by the commercial world, not many left like this anymore in Europe...

  • Great film Kareim, you captured the feeling and energy really well, and I've never seen anything like those Mamuthones before.

  • Cool! well done Kareim, this is a great little insight into a truly original festival/ritual. Executed well - I especially like how close you get to the characters and how we seem to be in the action. Love it.

By the way, do you think your friend Salvatore might lend me his costume for some kinky action? ;-)

See you soon, honey. Jobeda x

  • Kareim's film is a visual feast that reaffirms in a sensitive and lively way peoples connections with powerful universal themes eg. good and evil. I have just read again Chinua Acheba's 'Things Fall Apart' in which he describes a pre-colonial, Nigerian tribal masquarade scene. The film evokes the same feel of people gathering to use mask, performance and celebration to mediate powerfull forces. Heartwarming. Made me want to join in!

  • Good one Kareim! So important to hear about these little known cultural events and understand the way they link human beings to the ancient past and their ancestors in their celebation of life. It reminds me of some of the experiences I have been fortunate enough to share with Spanish friends on occasions. Would really hope this could be piclked up so that you could be enabled to delve further into it, expand on it and show it to a wider audience whom, I have no doubt, would fine it entertaining, interesting and enlightening. Well done and thank you. M xxx

  • I really enjoyed watching this, great work. The sound was so intense that it got me on the edge of my seat. Plus the images were so close up and involved that I felt I had gained a taste of what it was like to be there. It was a great little insight to a different culture that I had no idea about, and left me wanting to experience the festival first hand [despite it looking quite scary!!].
