Pope Benedict said Sunday it is "necessary to correct the errors of the past." He also prayed for the victims of the bombs and their families.
The UN's humanitarian chief has accused Israel of "completely immoral" use of cluster bombs in Lebanon. Most of these bombs were fired on the last day of the war , which clearly indicate Israel intention of causing the highest civilian causalities. UN clearance experts had so far found 100,000 unexploded cluster bomblets at 359 separate sites. Soldiers in IDF ( Isreali defence Forces) artillery units testified that the army used phosphorous shells during the war, widely forbidden by international law. According to their claims, the vast majority of said explosive ordinance was fired in the final 10 days of the war. Also they stated that over 1.2 million cluster bombs were fired at Lebanon. International law forbids the use of weapons that cause "excessive injury and unnecessary suffering".
Delegates from more than 100 countries are meeting in Dublin for two weeks starting Monday, looking to finalize a treaty outlawing cluster bombs. But representatives from nations that build the weapons - including the United States, Israel, Russia and China - are not participating. http://www.voanews.com/english/2008-05-18-voa22.cfm)
It's sickening to see that the most powerful nation, and the nation it backs up will not participate. It's all right for them to have weapons of mass destruction AND use them, but when another country has them they are classified as terrorists even though they are protecting themselves.

The IDF did not admit to targeting civilians they said very clearly
"the use of cluster munitions against built-up areas was done only against military targets where rocket launches against Israel were identified and after taking steps to warn the civilian population."
There are enough things to criticize Israel about without having to manipulate headlines.
This skewed headline does not contribute to world peace, it perpetuates the ongoing cycle of misinformation which leads to ignorance and hatred on all sides.

And they also let those civilians know for two days what was coming with leaflets. I've seen those leaflets. And they were in Arabic as well as Hebrew. And if you are going to show a photo of a mutalated Lebanese boy, dont forget to put up one or two of human remains splattered buses. Or of Religious study students from a few months ago.
And if you are going to call Israelis Nazis, your comments will be just thrown in the pathetic idiot file. Where were your grandparents during the war?
Ask me where mine were.
Find out why bone marrow donations are so difficult for Jews.
If you're going to be antisematic, at least be more creative about it.-

Criticism of Israel does not equal antisemitism. Everybody knows that Israel used cluster bombs on the Lebanese civilian population. We don't need Haaretz to tell us that.

no wonder american and israel are allies

The people who target children are the people who shoot rockets at Israel from residential areas.

This poor child, his poor family...and the poor Israeli children and families also. We should weep for all the innocents who are harmed by this war.
This is horrible that civilians are being harmed on either side. There is corruption on both sides of the fence and the needless suffering of innocents on both side.
The same forces are working in the USA and Iraq under Bush's grotesque occupation.. I wish that I could stop it all. As Americans we are all being blamed for Bush's insanity and greed. I wish I could stop that also. It is a nightmare.
Shame on you all for trying to make all Israeli people or all Palestinian people the perpetrators when it is a fraction mostly in the governments and military industrial who are the problem on both sides.
They love it when we fight like this because it feeds their Hate Machine...thats makes them money.

Historyeducation, et al.....Israels response to those rockets has been irresponsible, and downright ugly. There are many other ways of fostering peace with the Palestinians than to try to wipe out their existence. They had land taken from them without regards to ownership or to how they were to survive afterwards. I'd sure be pissed if some idiotic and brutal government overwhelmed my family and took my land. Maybe your history education was the same education they are now giving young and innocent Israeli children today by saying how terrible the Palestinians are and that they will kill you....thats no way of fostering peace by instilling fear into the hearts as well as prejudices.
I have many Jewish friends that agree that the Israel government is just a blood thirsty, greedy, power hungry bunch out to take over as much as they want without regard for human life. ATTENTION ISRAEL GOVERNMENT: Give back to the Palestinians what they once had, allow THEM to exist and you will see a great change of thinking. You may even see peace.-

WorldpeaceTV didn't we have a discussion about whose land you are standing on right now?
I don't mean to discredit everything you are saying but:
I don't think it is right either but we are part of a nation that took over land from Native Tribes. What are you doing to correct this? You seem to have forgotten this.
You can almost do a "find and replace" on your comments with Native Americans and United States Government. going in to replace Israeli and Palestinians.
Your pain is justified to see people suffering but your arguments are weak. You are naturally defending the underdog. You should include the Israeli people who are also human beings.....babies.. families ..grandpas and grandmas...suffering in there also to make friends with people like myself.. You are losing an audience with people who rely on Israel as a backup home if another Holocaust comes around. I am not smart enough to know exactly where the borders should be drawn but I know it can be worked out and we all can live in peace.
I loved the successful story of the children in classes on the border. We need more of that.
Perhaps Obama can help us..I don't know. It has to better than where we are now.

It is so sad that people would go that far as to destroy their own lives. I consider Israelis, Palestinians and Lebaneses Brothers and Sisters. They are by blood relatives of each other and they cannot find a way to united in Love and in respect for each other and their own Cultural Past. It is easy to talk about here, when some people has gone as far as to launch a weaponry of attack on each other over material disagreements. In the end of each ones lives, no one; No one will take anything Material from this physical World. That all means that something somewhere is missing in their Spiritual and Cultural background. I know what it is but I cannot tell them! They are the ones that will have to learn and recognize that on their own behalf one way or the other in some point of their lives. Culturally and Spiritually I considerate them my Brothers and Sisters and my wish is that they will live Prosperous and in Peace. Is that too much to ask? They are both smart and they both have the blue print of Spirituality and Life given by their Forefathers. I do Pray for them everyday day that Love, Brotherhood and Sharing will prevail in the end. I do it because I Love both Israelis, Palestinians, Iraqis, Lebaneses, Iranians, Turkishs, etc.

boy some people are so stupid and so blind, yes Israel used cluster bombs on Lebanon, don't give me this bullshit about them warning people ahead of time that they were going to do that, where do you expect people to go when you drop thousands of bombs on them, it's not like Lebanon is such a big country. and as far as the United States, they could have stopped it and saved a lot of innocent people but there are too many Jewish people in the U.S. that can buy any politician. Everyone in the U.S. feels so bad about Israel, believe me they are not as innocent as you might think, and all the crap about them being the chosen people, come on get over it, Israel has caused a lot of problems in the Middle East and that's why they are so hated, and the U.S. is hated because they back Israel. so until you have lived there and know exactly what is going on, or until you have lived in a war, and saw you family and friends being murdered, please keep your comments to yourself or educate yourself on the true History of why things happen.

Putting aside your irresponsible use of misinformation, did you notice that you are linking to an Israeli news paper that was discussing the results of an Israeli investigation into the issue?
Doesn’t Israel get credit for investigating such issues and taking steps to address them?
I don't think that Hezbollah would conduct any investigations into its murderous conduct against innocent Israeli and Lebanese citizens.
-
WOW Israel is going to do the investigation, they are going to investigate themselves, that's great, I wonder what they will find. over 1.2 million cluster bombs were fired at Lebanon, a bit much don't you think, going a little overboard with this many bombs don't you think. As if they didn't know what was going on, right? you are the expert aren't you, and just to let you know my info is correct, but the problem is some people don't want to hear the truth.

CarolynGillis, I did not imply anything, you are the one voicing it!
That is the point where I can not tell you what it is but it is something you will have to figure out in your own. I can go as far as to take a horse to the water. The decision to drink will be his!
Many in the USA professes to be themselves something where in reality they do not even read a Word of it! They just say they are! That does not mean they understand what is to Be... -
stopnoise
you are implying that what you have is necessarily good for me, like water, but I might disagree.
I am happy and content and a good wholesome person as I am. That is so with much of my family. I am a proud Agnostic and I happen to be culturally Jewish.
I don't have much chance of of being saved.
Maybe you want to change to my religion..that would be good for you....sorry to be sassy but trying to make you see my point .: )

Wolverine,
No. Your information is not correct. For example, you incorrectly state that 1.2 million cluster bombs were shot at Lebanon. This number was actually published by the Israeli press. And it was not the number of cluster bombs shot but a calculation of the number of bomblets that 1,800 cluster bombs would contain:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/761781.html
And you know what, I am not going to even argue that the 1,800 number (which by the way is not substantiated) makes things alright.
But you do have to understand that the citizens of Israel: Arabs and Jews, were under a direct attack during this war. At the time between 3,970 and 4,228 rockets were shot at Israeli civilians; killing, maiming and traumatizing many Arab and Jewish citizens of the state of Israel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Lebanon_WarIn
And according to all accounts, this war started as a result of an unprovoked attack by Hizballah. (see the same article above).
Anyway, there are many Israelis that are upset about the use of cluster bombs, and as you can see many of the links here come from Israeli news papers and Israeli investigations into this.
Finally, about the "chosen people" part. I don't see us as chosen people. On the contrary, we are regular people who are struggling with a complicated conflict. And despite your hate, we will find a way to resolve this conflict with two countries side by side. A Jewish state besides a Palestinian state. Two chosen people side by side.
-
Forgive my misspellings I am having a cocktail right now but I wanted to respond...I will probably sound dumb, sorry.
I agree with the chosen people part also currenton.
Just because some religious people say something doesn't mean they are speaking for all Jews.
I am Jewish and I am Agnostic.. I don't like to be considered a chosen person. I think that was made up to scare people somewhere back in time...a lot of that stuff...in all religions..A lot of it may be true but some of it is to make other cultures be wary of you.
..Our God is bigger and better than yours..and loves US the best.-

hizbulla only kidnapped two israels to exchange hundreads of lebanese people that are being held in israel besides israel was planning a war against lebanon beore this even happened... its sad there are casualties on both sides but israel targeted innocent people and hizbulla was just defending its country and never intentionally targeted civilians...israel would give an stupid excuse that there are hizbulla in this area hit it and kill innocent children how many Majzarit Qana do ppl need to see that

I think all of you need to step back and notice that there is a difference between the people of a nation and leaders of a nation.
In all countries world wide there are good hearted people who practice love and compassion and mercy, while there are an elite few, the ones that seek to preserve the status quo, call them conservatives perhaps, they often speak as though they speak for the entire nation. But they often do not voice the true sentiments of the populace. They are the ones responsible for the stereotypes that prevail about a country.
I didn't get from Stopnoise comments that he was advocating Christianity. I did get that he was advocating spirituality as the answer to the materialistic drive that leads many good hearted people to kill and destroy; even in defense of perceived threats. Our America is guilty of waging wars of preemption based on perceived threats, real or imagined.
I believe that there is a certain level of hysteria that has gripped the nations of the world and that hysteria has been manipulated and catapulted to the forefront of our collective unconscious because of their agenda, which is indoctrinated in beliefs of being elite, chosen by god for a divine mission of cleansing the planet of the undesirable unbelievers.
All three Abrahamic religions are engaging in this line of thinking. -
Carolyn; I hope you are aware that the words you're speaking, all came from you, not me. I am not trying anything in anyone. I have the right to express my views and I do not take the position of knowing everything or forcing anyone to do anything.
People in General must learn to do things in their own, not because someone is saying this or that.
I personally enjoy my Jewish and Christian Culture and I do express my favoritism for things that I already tested to be the true.
In the word of GOD it does say you should test the Spirit before jumping into conclusions. So I rather follow GOD than some people that do not know what they are talking about. Just plain personal reading, reflection and common sense actions. That's all!
What the World needs Today are more Love, Compassion, Charity and a sense of Sharing so we all can stop moving backwards and therefore move forward in Peace! -
jubal Your post is precisely what I am saying and beautifully stated. Thanks.
This is so key to us all getting along!
stopnoise... sorry if I misinterpreted your statements and i thank Al Gore's foresight for this chance to apologize on a whim!-

Carolyn; Yesterday we had an interesting conversation and I do not want You to think I was verbally battling You in anyway, Just expressing my views through. I did found interesting when you expressed your feelings implying that I was pushing you into something that might not be your original cultural believes.
I was going to respond to that Yesterday but fell short on time. So here is the "scoop" on that.
<---You said: "you are implying that what you have is necessarily good for me, like water, but I might disagree.
I am happy and content and a good wholesome person as I am."
--->
Sometimes we speak from our hearts and that is ok! However many times we do not pay much attention what that means!
A person that is confident and comfortable with their Culture or Religion would never tell someone they are pushing something different on them! They do not need to! They know what they are! They know from where they come from and their mission here on Earth! They would never mention the possibility that anyone is trying to change their believes.
It is people that have lack of confidence in their own believes that goes on at the defensive and protest implying that others are attempting to change their believes somehow!
Sure it is not your case, but you did protest didn't You?
I will leave all of you with these words for reflection:
"When ones are not certain or they do not believe on something, it is most likely they will fall for anything!"
I hope we both learned something! Have a Wonderful Day! -
stopnoise..you are insulting me.
I know you mean well but I am a 100% comfortable with my set of beliefs..
Really. I kid you not and I am totally sure..end of discussion.lol
