MPs vote against controversial 12 week abortion limit

Image...
UK MPs have voted against the controversial proposals that would have seen the legal time limit on abortions lowered to weeks.

Debates were put forward suggesting that the limit be lowered to 20 weeks, with others reportedly asking for cuts as low as 12 weeks, but all were defeated by a vote of 393 to 71.

For some extra reading on the abortion debate, the conservative MP, Nadine Dorries, waged a high-profile campaign - 20 Reasons for 20 Weeks which was been supported by both the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph.. it lists 20 reasons for a reduction in the time limit on abortion.

Have you seen the picture of a 21 week old pre-natal baby reaching out of the incision in his mom's uterus to curl around the doctor's fingers? How can you kill that cute little thing? What is so wrong about asking people to give the baby up for adoption instead? Maybe with the embarrassment of carrying the baby to term vs sucking it out into a sink, they will be more responsible.

  •

Man, if I got my girlfriend pregnant now I would definitely want her to have an abortion. I mean neither of us like children and she is not able to go on birth control. If your gonna complain about abortions, why don't you attack birth control as well. If I did go along with having a child I would not put it up for adoption. That is hell for someone to go through. I think it should be up to the individual having the child to decide what is best for them.

Undefined (that's how you spell it, btw) if neither you nor your girlfriend like children how come you have not had her tubes tied and your vasectomy. If you guys are not on birth control and still having sex and don't like children you are just irresponsible and bad people.

If you think giving a baby up for adoption is hell to go through, imagine going through an abortion as a baby. If you go to a video by Priests for Life you can't get a clear picture of what that's like. Neurologists have demonstrated that fetuses can feel pain, by distressed brain activity, much earlier than people thought. Until about 25 years ago people used to think infants didn't feel pain during surgeries, but that was false, too.

Look at that picture... babies like so much trash, unbelievable.

So much time and energy spent on trying to change (or not change) the laws regarding abortions. Why don't we instead use those resources to find a way to reduce unwanted pregnancies. I think education is a good start.

i dont think thats a real picture guys. you realize most abortions are preformed in the first trimester and if that picture were real that would be at least five third trimester abortions. what are they carrying a sack around to collect the big one's in? i have never even known anyone who has had one that late and i used to have some immoral friends.

Yeah, tell yourself it's not a real picture. There aren't late term abortions in this country either, because no one would have collected that many in a bag.

Late term abortions are inhuman and particularly horrifying to look at. If you're pro-choice, just embrace it, there's nothing wrong with this.

Most women getting an abortion try to handle that business before the baby is the age of these in the picture. Few facilities will abort a baby that's as old as these pictured. A fetus 0 - 3 months along is not this size. Most of these look to be nearly full termers. These babies are intact, indicating that they were not violently aborted. They're just dead babies.

This is little more than a pull at the old heartstrings. What do you want to bet that these are cadavres that have outlived their usefulness at some medical college? That someone would exploit this is a lot more sick than some woman deciding to abort the child she does not want.

The only moral abortion should be 'her' abortion, within a time scale of 'her' choice. Then again i understand it could all well be for the greater good since many women are physically damaged from the process.

Ms Dorries says that the main reason women have late-term abortions comes down to "procrastination." But, as reported in this article, she hasn't even spoken to many of these women.

From the article: "Many of those who have late-term abortions are the most vulnerable: teenagers who didn't realise that they were pregnant until five months' gestation; women with learning disabilities; those using methadone in drug rehabilitation programmes, which puts a halt to your periods. Women like the one I read of recently, whose partner started beating her up when she became pregnant, and who feared she would never be able to escape him if she had his baby."

As a society, who are we more responsible to protect?

There are a whole host iof reasons why a woman may be forced to make this decision. I doubt those circumstances will ever apply to readers of the The Mail, The Telgraph and female Tory MPs. The experts believe we have the right limits but is being contsted by a woman who gets cross because her daughter has to buy her own dinner. How depressing.

A brief update gang.. MPs will tonight vote on whether to cut the 24-week abortion limit.

In a series of votes, MPs will consider whether to reduce the time limit on terminations to as little as 12 weeks.

David Cameron, the Conservative leader, today said he would back a 22-week limit.

We need to be vigilant about allowing fundamentalist Christians to grab more and more power and our politicians pampering to them, or topics that deserve to be way way down the list of important reasons for voting start to take center stage as in the States.

A fundamentalist Christian's ideal world seems to be a population of about 25 billion knee deep in their own crap waiting for salvation.

Maybe this issue does have some validity but I worry it is just the start.

This is interesting. The shocking photo used with this post of the babies in the trash comes from this page:

    http://www.abortion.org.au/abortedfetuses.htm

Check it out for an explanation of the image, along with many other gruesome images used in anti-abortion campaigns.

    (Warning: gruesome images.)

No kidding on the photo - yikes! As for up to what point an abortion should be allowed...it worries me that politicians are making these decisions. Seems the date would vary based on the pregnancy, the woman etc. This is not a one-size-fits-all issue!

I agree, this issue depends on the individual and their case. i know that if i became pregnant i would think about abortion as an option, and would want as much time as possible to make this sort of decision.

Pro choice all the way. Do people really think that reducing the time frame would stop people having abortions. Abortions have been illegal at many points in history but did that stop it happening?

What's better, a safe option or the backstreet doctor? Reducing the time frame would force some people (such as the one's mentioned in the article) into impossible situations that could potentially do far more damage than a "safe" procedure.
