Since the momentous events of Sept. 11, 2001, countless news stories, TV commentaries, and books have speculated on the causes of terrorism, the attitudes of Muslims, and a purported clash of civilizations between Islamic societies and the West.
What has not been available is any reliable measure of the viewpoints of ordinary Muslims, who constitute 20 percent of the global population.
That is no longer the case. Through an ambitious six-year project that involved hour-long, face-to-face interviews with residents in nearly 40 nations, Gallup has plumbed the perspectives of Muslim men and women – urban and rural, educated and illiterate, young and old.

It's kind of weird. Apparently, you need to click on the "Read More" links on the right side starting with the section discussing how Muslims view Islam's compatibility with democracy. Way to go, Christian Science Monitor.
-
NO WAY! You mean they are normal people who want their opinions to be heard and not to be bombed?!!!??! Here all this time I thought they wanted to kill everyone who was different and force the rest to adhere to their outlandish religious laws.
O wait, thats Ann Coulter, not Muslims. My mistake. -
Generalization is never good, Islam is the faith they believe in, see the individual, not their faith.
-
"•What they dislike the most about the West includes: denigration of Islam and Muslims, promiscuity, and ethical and moral corruption.
•What they admire least about their own Muslim societies includes: lack of unity, economic and political corruption, and extremism."
It sounds like we're all on the same page. So... what are we fighting over again? -
Excuse me for screaming
WE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE OF THE WORLD ARE ALL SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING!!!!!
Thats beautiful!
Same as the Jews, Buddhists, Pagans, Earth Worshipers.. and the Christians and the Agnostics and Atheists I betcha....and the rest.
Let's all turn off our propaganda machines and LISTEN TO EACH OTHER here on these Current.com threads.
It is the Powerful Military Industrialist Complex, the governments using the media that are making us hate each other
We people all want the exact same thing..wake up..kiss our kids cute heads..complain about our aches and pains ..get a back rub and a hug if we are lucky.....call Grandma about a recipe for dinner ..all those lovely things called life all over the world..We don't all wake up thinking how we should hate and kill all the others.
It will not happen until we all stop falling for the nonsense of CNN and Fox crazy people telling us to be fearful of each other. That is PRECISELY WHAT THEY WANT..LET'S STOP FIGHTING .KIDDIES
-
Other than the fact that they are trying to kill us, every reportable conflict in the world involves islam, anything seen as a possible insult ,whether it is or not, receives riots, destruction and death, the convert or die ideas they are a wonderful group.
-
It is in the best interest of some people to create rifts... In my opinion all of these problems can be related to the widespread practice of trying to label/ define everything... What good do you get out of calling someone a Muslim or Christian? A religion is different to every single person who practices it... By labeling people in any way you are just promoting the shallow understanding that plagues the world...

I think these numbers go to the heart of what most Westerners are wondering and will, hopefully, dispel some of the ignorance associated with Muslims and the prevalence of "extremists":
•Among the Muslims surveyed, 7 percent condoned the 9/11 attacks. The study terms these the "politically radicalized."
•When asked why they supported the attacks, the radicals gave political rather than religious reasons. They have a sense of political frustration and feel humiliated and threatened by the West. Those who opposed the attacks often gave religious reasons for doing so.
•Radicals are no more religious than the general population and do not attend mosque more frequently.
•What distinguishes them is not their perception of Western culture or freedoms, but their perception of US policies. Even radicals say they support democracy. But 63 percent of radicals do not believe that the United States will allow people in the region to fashion their own political future without direct US influence. -
Read the data for yourself- I must say it is interesting to note this tidbit from Gallup's poll:
When Muslims were asked what they
admired most about the West, only 2% in Iran, 6% in
Saudi Arabia; and 10% in Egypt said “NOTHING.” When
Americans were asked the same question about the
Muslim world, 32% of respondents said "NOTHING.”
In other words- American's RESPECT the Middle East far less then the people of the Middle East RESPECT America... -
this is awesome.
we are never told this sort of information by the media or administration of this country. it is fully necessary to keep us in the dark about the truth behind "radical islam" and US policy. how often have we heard the "they hate our freedom" rhetoric?
in speaking about RADICALS:
"•What distinguishes them is not their perception of Western culture or freedoms, but their perception of US policies. Even radicals say they support democracy. But 63 percent of radicals do not believe that the United States will allow people in the region to fashion their own political future without direct US influence."
so glad to see a study like this hit.-

I hope these survey results get a lot of attention this November. The only thing that worries me more than racial bigotry is the potentially even greater religious bigotry which always seems to climax every 4 years.

Excellent tidbit KennyJ

Beautiful! We are ALL saying the exact same thing but we don't know it yet! The subject is critical to world peace..because of Al Gore we can now have this easy on going two way dialog..we should kiss his feet for having the foresight of how critical this free flow of ideas is. Previously we only had sound bites from Murdoch and his old crusty cronies selections. These selections make sure all their corporations and interests profit. Imagine if Fox and CNN had put out pieces of this conversation..we would have perpetrated more hate and killing on both sides of the issue. Here we have been able to chit chat our way to understanding each other in a few minutes! I love it..I have hope for us yet!!

umm... the taj mahal isn't a muslim religious site. completely irrelevant picture.
-
Democracy in general doesn't appear to be the problem. It's how the US government abuses it that's offensive to Muslims. Hmmm. Common ground, there.
-
The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous examples of Islamic Art and part of it is a mosque... Pointless remark either way...
The stats are really interesting. My hope is that mediums like current begin to catch on so the majority of the public can see things like this... The main stream media and the modern politicians make me question our democracy as a US citizen... I can only imagine the effects it has on people outside, who only see the foreign influences of the US... I really hope these stats and information start to be seen by most. -
Mako, you make a great point in highlighting the tiny amount of Muslims that condoned the attacks. It's research like this that can help people make their own assertions about other religions.
-
I think it's really good for people in the west to see that the kind of stereotyping of muslims is not reciprocated.
-
I would like them to go out and do similar surveys of other nations and religious groups, asking the same questions
-
i agree, phil.
-
MoMoney you should be questioning our "democracy" because we don't have nor should we want one!!
Were in the Constitution does it mention "democracy"?
What about the Pledge?
Read Federalist#10 for the founders thoughts on democracy, or Article 4, section 4 US constitution, or Training Manual No. 2000-25 published by the War Department, November 30, 1928. In a true democracy nothing is guaranteed except that 51% decides EVERYTHING.
I'd bet that if Gallop had offered a choice of anything with a Bill of Rights to secure certain liberties an overwhelming majority would have jumped at it. Look at the numbers for guaranteed freedom of speech!!! Also Political Freedoms were among the things most admired about the west. Without the exact language of the poll I will suppose that this is why they chose a third model incorporating islamic law and democratic principles, BUT they didn't want religious leaders to have a direct role in the govt or forming it.
What a surprise. They are human and they want individual freedoms. -
That picture is intense...Muslims across the world have been demonized almost beyond repair. The public has been tricked into thinking that Islam is some savage, backwards religion. I bet a great number of people would think that Allah is the evil God to the good God.

Ultimately FUNDAMENTALISM is what is dangerous, NOT religion it self. SO the question must be asked:
What factors cause a person to identify with FUNDAMENTALISM?
-
Don't take me wrong, but, most of our cities and suburbs are pouring with Muslims.......
Is this another silent invasion? -
I rather be taken over by Nazies than muslims. They are nicer. We should adopt muslims ways and behead all the muslims that won't convert to chritianity.

Yeah, this is what happen in all over South Asia in 15th and 16th century.
Behead and hanged Buddhists who didn't want to convert Christianity.
"Oh, wait, Didn't Jesus said to Love your friend and Love more your enemy." -
"In other words- American's RESPECT the Middle East far less then the people of the Middle East RESPECT America... "
So, tell me what is it that the West should respect.
We should respect Mulsim's resorting to violence in the millions to denounce an analysis suggesting their religion is violent?
We should respect numbers of Imam's informing their followers that suicide bombing is OK, even if it kills innocents, and is not against the Quran?
We should respect that these people talk the talk but they don't walk the walk when it requires them to intervene behind their own closed Mosque doors to rally against budding extremism.
and to kushan,
Re: "Yeah, this is what happen in all over South Asia in 15th and 16th century.
Behead and hanged Buddhists who didn't want to convert Christianity.
"Oh, wait, Didn't Jesus said to Love your friend and Love more your enemy." "
The difference is that the Bible indeed does preach love and turn-the-other-cheek whereas the Quran preaches to kill non-believers who won't convert or, if those non-believers are people of the book (i.e. Jews and Christians), then then you might let them live but they are second-class citizens who must serve Muslims. Islam is/was spread by the sword with religious doctrine backing it and is a religion that is in its deepest roots, intolerant of other religions. Christianity does not preach such a concept.

I said, Christians who killed Buddhists all over South Asia, because those Buddhists who didn't won't to become Christians......
I know Islam is preaching something very disturbing. But, Christians or may be name sake Christians killed so many Buddhists and ruined long preserved traditions in many south asian countries in the name of God and Christ. -
re: "Other than the fact that they are trying to kill us, every reportable conflict in the world involves islam, anything seen as a possible insult ,whether it is or not, receives riots, destruction and death, the convert or die ideas they are a wonderful group. "
This is true. It had been recently determined that 95% of the world's current conflicts involved either muslim on muslim or muslim on non-muslim scenarios... the common denominator... ummm....-

You're an embarrassment palmbay, die in a fire so as to prevent the creation of any progeny that any ogre of a woman would be foolish enough to blight the earth with.
The stats are right there and you are still too damn foolish to admit the truth, that you are more of a nazi than they are. -
I think all humans should stop praising their beliefs and religion in public. Because, most of the time, it becomes a burden to others.
I think, we should not entertain our faith become a barrier to become friends with others.
Stop killing in the name of your religion. -
What a nice change of pace for a topic of conversation. Religion is the devil! Haha.

Islam literally means "Submission" and a Muslim is a "submitter"... So basically anyone who is a submitter is a Muslim:
[2:62] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
People bend a skew other things to try to achieve their goals... There are over 1 Billion declared Muslims worldwide so they are bound to be in the news... The majority of them preach peace and nonviolence, as evident in the statistics. So why do people who are not declared Muslims claim they understand the scripture better then the declared Muslims? This is essentially what is being done when a person who is not a part of the religion makes any kind of declaration about it... If the majority of Muslims say it is a religion of peace, but some people say it preaches violence, who is to be believed? The people who live it or the people who watch it from the eyes of the media and government? Look at the stats!
It pains me to see people who claim to be free-thinkers, continue to blindly follow what they are told. -
it's funny - i've been a solo traveller off and on for the last 8 years and have sat across from guys ( muslims ) who'd be considered terrorists these days and we got along just fine - i guess it was because they noticed that i was more scared of getting a bad case of the runs than i was of being killed by any one of them , whose country i may have traveled 6,000 miles to visit .
-
This was a very good idea. There is so much blind hatred in the world and only education and compassion can solve this problem.
-
Sorry I just happen to think so many of the world's problems are directly linked or caused by religion.
-
carolynGillis --couldnt have said it better. Kudos.
As for Mafioso-- the worlds problems arent because religion. Religion is beatiful, all forms. When certian peolpe take religion and use it as a tool to turn people agianst each other it because negetive. So what have we learned today? Religion is ok, using religion for your self interest is not. Theres a big difference, religion is not the problem, its more of people using religion to create problems.
