Gas prices around the world

Gas in the U.S. is really cheap compared to the rest of the world. So why are Americans crying so much? Car companies didn't force anybody to buy giant SUVs. $4.00 a gallon is a bargain.

  • Americans complain about gas prices because most US cities are spread out and the public transport system is nearly useless. Therefore commuting to work for 45 minutes at those prices hits the wallet/purse hard.

But, I love how the prices in the oil rich countries are as low as $.53.

  • This looks a little outdated (it's about $3.98 in San Francisco now), but the sentiment still holds true. If you hate gas prices so much, you can always move to Caracas or Tehran...

  • Our prices would be $2.00 dollars more a barrel if the US government did not subsidize the oil industry to the tune of 60 billion dollars a year. How's that for your tax dollars hard at work.
    sktoday
  • sktoday makes a good point, the prices could be alot higher than they are, u.s. gov already gives us a break on gas, which is why the McCain gas tax holiday is beyond stupidity..

our dependence on oil, domestic or foreign needs to be eliminated. period.

  • also remember we don't put as strict regulations on mpg like some other countries....yes it's our choice to buy an suv or hummer....but in Other countries you may not even be able to drive those cars around. In China (i believe) you have to have at least 40-45 mpg in order to drive a car, we here in America sell cars as low as 15-20 mpg...im glad prices aren't as high as someother countries (yet) but when i first started driving it used to cost me $15-$20 to fill up my tank....now it's 45+. And as a full time commuting college student....it doesnt make me happy to wake up every morning and see them raising the prices.

  • Someday we'll look back and think that $4.00 a gallon was cheap.

  • A combination of oil companies greed, too many SUVs, and lack of proper public transportation is the reason why we are stuck in this situation.

  • We routinely go to space, stay under the ocean for months at a time, but can’t come up with an alternative to gas? Anything at all?

Feels like someone is playing Monopoly…and winning.

  • i can't even afford to drive to church and pray for gas prices to get lower .

  • For anyone interested in learning more about our dependence on oil and the ramifications thereof, I recommend watching this documentary:

    http://www.netflix.com/Movie/A_Crude_Awakening_The_Oil_...

It was definitely an eye opener for me!!!
  • are these prices adjusted for liters to gallons and vice versa? Also, are they US prices-compared to the US dollar-or prices in the country of origin's local currency?

    shampton
  • good questions shampton. either way, I'd better sell my car soon!

  • I've started to wonder when folks are going to stop driving and riding bikes because this is getting ridiculous. Luckily I live in a small town and I'm able to ride a bike, but for all those in big cities i have mad sympathy for you! Stay strong!

  • Wired points out that while Norway is the third highest exporter of oil they still pay twice as much for gas as Americans because of taxes. Both the US government and citizens have been irresponsible and now we are facing the consequences.

  • Old, but good.

  • Somehow that doesn't make me feel any better. I don't really care what they pay in Europe, I care what I pay in Mississippi.

  • Just one more reason to move the the UAE. Dubai is the place to be. Jobs, no taxes, cheap communter flights, good night life, safe.

  • No matter what you say about gas prices we are still gonna pay what ever they tell us too. You can say your going green but how you gonna get there?

  • IF YOU GO TO EUROPE AND OTHER COUNTRIES YOU WILL FIND VERY ASSESSIBLE PIBLIC TRANSIT. IF I GO TO RUSSIA OR POLAND OR THE EUKRAINE OR FRANCE (I HAVE BEEN TO THESE PLACES AND MANY MORE) YOU HAVE A BUS OR CAB AT EVERY STREET. IN AMERICA WE DID AWAY WITH PUBLIC TRANSIT IN THE SUBURBS OR YOU NEED TO WALK AN HOUR TO FIND A BUS THAT RUNS EVERY HOUR OR SO. TRY GETTING DOWNTOWN OR TO WORK ON PUBLIC TRANSIT IN MANY AREAS OF AMERICA AND YOU WILL FIND IT VERY HARD IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER WHEN MANY PEOPLE CAN'T WALK SEPECIALLY DURING A SNOW STORM. THINK ABOUT IT. AMERICA IS NOT PREPARED FOR THIS SCENARIO OF VERY POOR OR NO PUBLIC TRANSPORT. SUPPOSEDLY THE MOST ADVANCED NATION IN EXISTENCE AND A FEW OIL COMPANIES HAVE IT ON ITS KNEES BECAUSE THE DIMWITS IN CONGRESS HAVE NO PLAN B. NOW THAT'S PLANNING WITH A CAPITOL "P" FOR POOR PLANNING.
AT $4.00 A GALLON OR EVEN $3.00 OR EVEN $2.00 NO WONDER PEOPLE CAN'S PAY THIER MORTGAGE AND ARE LOOSING THIER HOMES. YES THE MORTGAGE COMPANIES HOODWINKED MANY PEOPLE BUT THE GAS COMPANIES ARE NOW THE ONES TAKING ALL THE MONEY AND DRIVING PEOPLE TO BANKRUPCY. ALL OF A SUDDEN PEOPLE ON A BUDGET WITH $100.00 A MONTH FOR GAS ARE LOOKING AT $400.00 A MONTH OR HIGHER. WELL GEE SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE. ESPECIALLY WHEN WAGES ARE ON THIER WAY DOWN. IT IS TIME TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD. RAISE EVERYBODIES SALARIES BY THE 300% GAS HAS GONE UP AND GIVE ABOUT 1 OR 2 MILLION JOBS BACK TO AMERICA AND WE HAVE A FIGHTING CHANCE. DUMB YA AND HIS CLAN NEED TO BE REMOVED AND SOMEONE WHO HAS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN THIER GAME PLAN NEEDS TO BE ELECTED. RIGHT NOW THE ONLY HOPE IS OBAMA, I JUST HOPE HE CAN WADE THROUGH ALL THE BULLSHIT AND ACCOMPLISH SOMEOF HIS GOALS AND I HOPE HE MEANS TO AND THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER POLITICIAN BLOWING HOT AIR. TIME WILL TELL. MEANWHILE PRAY FOR THE ELECTRIC CAR SO WE CAN DUMB YA AND BIG OIL AND THE ARABS TO DRINK THIER OIL FOR BREAKFAST. I'LL KEEP RIDING MY BIKE AS LONG AS THE WEATHER LETS ME. I LIKE RIDING PAST THE GAS STATIONS AND LAUGHING AND FEELING SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE THAT ARE CAUGHT IN THIS TRAP SET BY BIG OIL AND THE CORPORATIONS AN THE BUSHIES TO BLEED AMERICA DRY. DOES ANYONE NOT AGREE.

Im not sure its that way in China because they have a nice population of millionaires who like expensive cars, some of those being Ferraris, Lamborghini's, etc. These cars for the most part have a mpg of 9,10,12, range. Some have higher, but for the most part they [mpg rates] are rather low. Overall we do not pay the highest for gas, i think its our self conscience mind that says "dont ride on public transportation its only for poor people" that gets to us.

I agree our transportation could be better, but hey at least we have something.

  • The gas prices in other countries has been high all along because the population has their medical care paid for by the gas taxes. When WE pay a high price for gas we are not getting a break because we are paying our own medical care AND paying the insurance companies to build large buildings with their name on them and fill them with paper shufflers whose only job is to say no, and deny care. They tell us we are doing it this way to save money and cut back on medical care costs. We haven't saved the first dime yet!

  • Thank God, the internet doesn't require oil or I'd be real press to visit the rest of the world. Bikes on the freeway doesn't sound so bad now, does it?
    damush
  • As Americans we consume far more oil than most of the world, which quickly makes up for our relatively low gas price. It’s sad that the jump in gas prices is what’s finally pushing the long overdue research of alternative fuels.
    VigorousAlloy
  • Robroy1, your first paragraph was bang on! It's time for America to wake up and DEMAND social infrastructure like pubilc transit, bike lanes, and the like. You can't artifically keep oil prices low, but you CAN strengthen your own country to withstand fluctuations in price.
    Elligirl
  • well if you get an up-to-date price list, you will notice that the rest of the world prices are not rising on par with U.S. prices. that is because the Saudis are only increasing in relation to the inflation of the dollar. speaking of which, this inflation is manufactured just like the sub prime mortgage debacle with the fed printing money out of thin air!
    fighttheNWO
  • if you dont like the price, dont pay it. if you got a problem with the companies that sell the product ,dont buy it.
    riverdeer
  • Well there's always beans. Youknow? Beans, beans, the magic fruit, the more you eat the more you poot. Cheaper than corporate greed and more natural in combustive energy. Try buying that!
    damush
  • Sorry but there is only one thing we can do! Become a chairman of a major oil company or CEO then make it our goal to find a alternative! But guess what when we get there "CEO/Chairman Status ''we will forget about everything and become consumed by greed! If Im lyin slap me and i guarantee ill have a pretty face tomorrow morning . So go and vote responsiblly and hopefully we dont get a hillbilly!

  • I also agree with freedomisfree I think gas will only keep going up.

  • Where do you find gas in NY for 2.92 a gallon please share? We just hit over 4.00 a gallon and its going to get worst.
    helloignorants
  • the problem with just listing the prices like this is that different countries subsidize oil differently so costs are going to change from country to country either way.
  • 17 cents a gal. in some parts of S.A.

    how interesting.
    1Eco_Media
  • Yah but europeans have always had to pay higher taxes on gas its nothing new to them
    damartin90
  • Other countries tax their fuel higher than we do, that is why they pay more. Their tax systems are much different than ours and ultimately pay much less on a per capitol income and in many cases non at all.

Don't be fooled about high gas prices being about greed...although I am sure there is a certain amount of that involved, they are driving the prices up so drastically and in such a short time because our enemies are attempting to destroy us through our economy. As far as a short term fix, I don't think there is any. Increasing taxes and making things more difficult of corporations will only result in layoffs, higher unemployment and more companies forced to go under or move outside of the country to be able to compete. Of course, we can become a communist or a socialistic society and let the government control everything, treat every like they are the same and shut down freedom of speech and the other things that entail freedom...like free enterprise, and the right to bear arms, but then again think about all the creativity that would be lost if that happened.

  • I wonder when this sample of data was taken to produce this poster. I just paid $3.69 per gallon at Costco in Oregon. This story is a little misleading.
    jubal
  • Houston dreams of paying $2.56 for a gallon of gas. This article is a year old and the data is severely outdated. Furthermore, the knowledge that various parts of the world pay different amounts for gas is not news.
