The $25 million CA gay marriage battle

The California Supreme Court legalized marriage equality last Thursday, but now LGBT's face the battle of their lifetimes. Christian conservatives are working towards a ballot initiative that would change California's constitution to ban marriage equality. The cost of the electoral battle is estimated at $25 million. But the cost goes beyond money for the thousands of California citizens whose rights will likely be decided by the votes of their neighbors.

Christian conservative groups have asked the court to stay their decision until after the election. The court has not responded to those requests yet. If the court does not stay their decision, marriages could start in less than 30 days. Californians would than have the option to absolve those marriages by passing the ballet initiative.

Polling data suggests the race will be ridiculously close.

  • I am sure it will, but we will give those equal rights haters the fight of their lives. If we win California then the rest of the country will eventually fall in line. California is the pivotal moment in history.

Let us claim victory once and for all time.

  • I love the sign in the picture above. I can see it now: a reality show in which a bunch of gays and lesbians sit around a closed-circuit TV screen observing a straight couple get engaged. If they seem like a good match that will stick together and not violate the sanctity of marriage, they vote YES. If they doubt the couple would stay together without contributing to the 50% divorce rate in this country, then of course they vote NO --on the straight marriage! I bet FOX Reality channel would buy it in a heartbeat!

  • With an hope, Californians will vote for equal rights.

  • Did we vote on your marriage?
No, and why should you have to? My life, my right, my happiness.

Let us hope that Californians against intolerant bigotry and votes for what is unbiased; as in, not according to their singular moral beliefs.
  • Let us once and for all give equal rights to everyone.

  • Are there any organizations out-of-staters can donate money to?

  • While I don't really care about which side wins, the reality is it shouldn't be decided in the court room. The justices overrode 30 years of legislation and a very recent voter initiative. It should have been sent back to the people for a re-vote, not arbitrarily decided upon by a small selection of judges.

I mean whats the point of voting if some justice can void your opinion?

  • What is the purpose of having judges if they cannot legislate fairness from the bench? Fairness is Justice!

  • It's not just about love and happiness, it's also about legal rights. Marriage automatically provides legal protections. Every couple who wishes to stand up before the community and say that they are making a commitment should be celebrated and supported. Christian "conservatives" are doing themselves a huge disfavor by acting in this fashion. No one believes anymore that they understand any of the principles they are supposed to stand for.

  • that sign is great..but i honestly can't even believe this is debatable

  • This sort of issue is exactly what the courts are for! The government's duty is to protect the rights of its citizens and ensure that no minority is discriminated upon by the majority.

How about we put that 25,000,000 into buying some vaccines for third world children that die from horrible diseases within a few hours of life? How about we have a vote?

  • I know I won't be voting for this come November. I just hope my fellow Californians feel the same way, but judging by the response in my local paper this weekend its not looking good. What really bothers me is the people can stand up and say that they favor discrimination towards any group.

  • If this is about the sanctity of marriage where is:

    - The amendment that makes divorce illegal?

If it's about the children who need both a mother and father, where is:

    - The amendment that makes divorce illegal until your children are 18 or older?

If it's about having children, where is:

    - The amendment that requires a couple to sign a contract to have a child within the first two years of marriage?
    - The amendment that disallows marriage to a straight man or woman who can't physiologically have children?

If it's about the courts overturning the will of the voters, where is:

    - The amendment that makes interracial marriage illegal? (A super majority of the country was anti-interracial marriage when the courts deemed it legal in 1967)

This is all bullshit, and I'm sick of homophobic bigots thinking they can keep my rights away from me.

  • @rayblasdal

They didn't overturn the will of the people. The people wrote in legislation that is unconstitutional. The people turned a blind eye to the constitution due to bigotry and then have the audacity to scream foul.

I do wonder, since the majority of Americans were anti-interracial marriage, and the courts deemed interracial marriage legal, are you of the mind that interracial marriage should be illegal?

And don't give me any historical context. The parallels are stunning. If you reply by looking back at interracial marriage and can justify the courts, then you must also look forward to gay marriage and justify it as well.

  • In the words of my 87 year old grandma "Why should I care who gets married to who. I'm not the one who has to live with them."

  • its a shame that so much is spent towards the name of intolorance.

sometimes humans astonish me for how non-senseable they can be.

  • Why does anyone care what other people are doing with their lives? Is it harming them in any way? $25 Million dollars to make sure a group doesn't get to call themselves what they want to call themselves? Absolutely impossible in the Land of the Free I would think... Clearly we are far from the example we started out as.

  • I am so fed up with bigotry it is not funny. I grew up in rural Minnesota and resisted being shipped off to anti-gay camp in Tennessee when I came out.
It would be such a tragedy if the California supreme court let those intrusive meddlers have any say about the GLBT community receiving their long overdue rights.

  • It has always seemed to me that this should be a non-issue.

The government recognizes marriages as a formal and legally binding union.

Because a marriage is traditionally a religious ceremony, if a church allows a same sex couple to wed, then they are to berecognized as a married couple.

I've always seen it as a separation of church and state.
    nickwe3d
  • if its a religious issue then why can athiests get married?
    RoBot_rOcKer
  • "It would be such a tragedy if the California supreme court let those intrusive meddlers have any say about the GLBT community receiving their long overdue rights. "

California already had extensive equality laws in place so that this was not an issue of rights. It was simply an issue of terminology. Therefore, perhaps not be confused with this impact if it were to occur in other states, CA Supreme Court's ruling didn't by itself provide GLBT in CA any more or less rights in the state. Or at least that is what I understand (as a Californian).
  • I didnt vote on paying taxes for other peoples kids when I dont even have any. That pisses me off that my taxes are higher because I dont have kids. About Gay Marraige, it is about time. 2 people love each other & gets married, yippee!! That is awesome & has many benefits of contributing to the future of America & the future of promiscuity. If people knew they could get married, then they would take dating more serious & not all be lumped into 1 catagory of being this way, or that way. but anyways, Check out his hillarious Bert & Ernie Video, its a song, not offensive, just funny...
enjoy & good luck to all !!
