Six million children in Ethiopia are at risk of acute malnutrition following the failure of rains, the UN children's agency, Unicef, has warned.
More than 60,000 children in two Ethiopian regions require immediate specialist feeding just to survive, Unicef says.
The situation is expected to worsen in the next few months as crops fail. Aid agencies in Ethiopia say they are short of funds as donors concentrate on the emergencies in China and Burma.
The WFP estimates it needs to raise $147m (£75m) to tackle Ethiopia's needs. The UN estimates it currently has a shortfall of 180,000 tonnes of food - and presently has no promises to meet this target.

i never wish for anyone to suffer, but we as a species we don't get it, there is NOT enough food, gas, and water for EVERYONE, so stop reproducing (which we wown't).
EVERY problem: lack of gas, wars, starvation, disease, pollution is because of: OVERPOPULATION-

It is statistically possible for us to grow enough food to curb world hunger, we just can't logistically pull it off. We need to become vegetarian...

wessagusset.... there has to be a way. what if we give monetary incentive to people for not having kids? (might involve a surgical procedure for guarantee)

Well, didn't we just have like a huge Live 8 concert for this? Angelina Jolie's and Bono's efforts? The UN's efforts? The pledges of individual nations? See, the problem is that the warlords intercept the food we try to give the starving masses-it is the very same problem that led to the U.S.'s "Blackhawk Down" episode in Mogadishu-we tried to take town one of those food-hoarding warlords, and the people sided with the warlord and dragged our soldier's bodies through the streets. Talk about biting the hand that tries to feed you...

Hey can't we just relocate these people. It seems obvious that where they live isn't suitable for them to live. Instead of sending food we could move them to where they could grow food. Long term rather than short term solution which lets face it what were doing now isn't a solution. Lets have a massive concert, like that will solve anything. We could solve all the worlds problems if we could all focus, disregard the cost and just do what has to be done.

we have enough food in the world but not enough resources to export it all to the starving countries.
instead of spending billions and billions of dollars on unecessary spending (ie: war, among other things) we should be using that money to aid the helpless people around the world.-

There's plenty of food, the problem is in the distribution of it. The Aid agencies make the situation worse.
-
that`s not risk of hunger, thats risk of starvation... it seems so damn unfair how lots of movie stars or footballers spent they money on cars houses and parties, when there`s millions of people specially kids that have to suffer this unhumanitary conditions.

onechance, you can't just tell people to stop having babies or distribute condoms and hope they'll use them. If they lack education and/or birth control, they have no real choice.
Plus, there are plenty of resources to go around. It's the people in power who starve the masses for greed and the game of empire. -
mayalynn-
I know I know... I'm just frustrated.
And, in my opinion, there WAS enough, but we're approaching the breaking point here I believe.
I DO however agree with what you say about the greedy bastards that take enough for an entire city and call it "success"...
But seriously, beyond greed, overpopulation IS the problem. -
I agree that overpopulation is a problem. But these people are suffering because their crops failed - that’s down to the weather surely? So it falls into the same category as Britain last year with its floods. Did you say last year that the people in Sheffield, Gloucester and Hull should just stop having babies?

I say that everyone, everywhere should stop breeding.
Yes.
http://www.overpopulation.org/impact.html -
Maybe this is just another example of Mama Nature keeping overpopulation in check...cyclones, earthquakes, drought...
But there's still a problem when countries that are extremely wealthy in natural resources have millions of residents living below the poverty level. It's usually the white man's fault. Just kidding! (Or am I...?) I digress. -
Yes, onechance, that's a feasible plan. (cough) ;-)
-
Feasible or not... Maybe my comment is just to get people thinking about it.
I could say all war should end right now too, and I'd MEAN it, so would you couch at that mayalynn? -
Oprah has enough money to buy ethiopia , so does Bill Gates - maybe they should get together for coffee .
-
huh? Sorry, I try to be as realistic about things as possible...even if it means I'm critical and cynical. Saying people should stop breeding and all war should end is cute. But that will never happen.
But I feel ya, I think more women should have (voluntary) abortions. (uh oh, did I just go there?) -
Cute? well, I think everyone sees your true colors here.
I'll keep living my dreams of what you may call unrealistic...
I'll keep trying and hoping for a better world while you stay "realistic".
Good luck! -
There is more than enough food in the world to feed everyone, even as populations continue to rise exponentially. However, with much of the worlds food crops being fed to livestock, food that could have gone to feed the 840 million people currently starving, the problem is unlikely to be solved.

I agree that everyone should stop breeding...look how crowded China is! lol plus, if you must feel the need to be a parent you can always adopt! :) or take the easy route and get a loving pet.

You think people in Ethiopia are popping out kids because they want them?
onechance, no need to be defensive...I'm not attacking you. I just believe in action versus hope. And all I'm saying is you can't tell people to not have babies because most people aren't making a choice about it, it just happens. So a more reasonable solution would be to educate people on how to avoid getting pregnant. But maybe we're saying the same thing? -
A lot of those women get pregnant due to rape, not merely lack of birth control. So overpopulation may be the problem, but I feel a country is only as strong as they treat their women. Women are the ones who tended to the fields in Africa (throughout history) and were the center of the household. To say they're careless is insulting.
The government needs to help those people, but we as Americans can't force them nor can we keep enticing them to change their religion to get a bag of rice!-

Overpopulation is a major issue for this topic, but you shouldn't be flagging it around all willy-nilly. The only reason people down there have so many kids is because they all end up dying of disease in the first place (regardless of the population) and the more kids you have, the more likely there is for a few to survive and help you as you grow older. Most of the parents are also uneducated, and while they may be intelligent, they may not be literate enough to function in today's society, therefore finding other ways of gaining profit other than growing crops, having kids, etc.
And when was the last time you had a snack? Have you opened the fridge to see it stacked with food, half of it not even grown in your own nation? Try counting how many grocery stores you have sitting around in your nearby suburb, city, or even village. There's a lot. Or at least where I live. And there's no reason why people should be saying we don't have enough for everyone. We have TONNES of food we could ship over seas, instead of perhaps ammunition and what have you.
Lastly, you can't relocate these people! Most of them have deep ties to where they live, and to them its their home, as well as their coffin. And do you have any clue how hard it would be to move ALL those people? To where, perhaps? South Africa with the riots currently taking place? Or to Europe, where there’s a mix of entirely different cultures?
Anyhow, I know I've been a little hard on others in this post, so feel free to criticize or correct what I've said~ ^__^ -
Take a look at what farm subsidies are doing to the food supply.
This is a big part of the problem, our government paying people not to farm, not to produce food, its a price fixing scheme to insure profits for commercial agri growers.
If more farmers were allowed to grow crops, those crops could be sold to third world countries for less money that in the US but it would help to alleviate world hunger. We have millions of acres that are not being farmed because people have been told not to farm for so long that they practically have forgotten how. There has been at least two generations of farmer disconnect and that knowledge is not being passed down to future generations.
This is a big part of the tragedy, don't produce food in order to preserve profits for corporate growers.
This is madness. -
Meanwhile we want to put food in our gas tanks.....

It's sad that there are six million children starving while the United States is defined as the most overweight country in the world.
What made us so damn self-centered?-

Wessagusset_Oracle, you raise a good point.
Somewhere, we need to draw the line. But the people living in poverty don't have the pill.
The U.S could do something about this...
But no, were stuck with out thumb up our butts in Iraq.-

this is going to be a very objectionable observation , but it's a real one , coming from a guy whose spent lots of time in Africa : kids in Africa start having sex at a very young age ( and having babies ) because , in most cases , they grow up in the same small space / hut/ living quarters / home as their parents , and are exposed to their parents having sex from infancy - it's natural to these kids to have sex as early as they're able to , as they've listened to / watched their parents having it since they were born .
when a family lives in poverty , parents can't afford to have a nice house where they can just close the door and / or get it on while the kids are at school and their kids won't know what's going on .
kids learn from their parents - "population" starts at home .
i will not begin to address my personal feelings about the kind of timeline Africa is up against if it doesn't rapidly adopt the idea of protected sex . -
Have a look at this VC2 pod about street children in Ethiopia.
-
riverdeer, you wrote "instead of giving them food maybe we should help them grow there own.". Ethiopians have known how to grow their own food for many thousands of years - but when a severe drought hits, crops fail, and famine sets in.

Ok so the real issue is how change their environment into an easier place to grow food, live free of disease and what not. Therefore we need to find out what food source is sustainable in that kind of environment and put in place a plan to distribute capabilities to produce this food to the people. Any ideas people on animals, crops resistant to drought etc.
-
As a world we are more than fully equipped to feed ourselves. But there's not the motivation. Agricultural an livestock farming in developed countries is a dying industry, with land being given over to Bio-fuels and mass construction. But surely its these countries - that don't have the same risk of floods or droughts - that ought to be provding affordable food. If I was a true cynic I'd think there was a general consensus amongst rich, developed nations to keep themselves at the top of the tree, by keeping developing nations at the bottom and struggling.
