With death tolls being now projected around 70,000, China enforces an 'entertainment ban' which adds another black mark to their 'oppresive regime' title, who has the money to do what, the contrast now faced for the Games and one word keeps coming up - 'control'.

Funny that you mention the money that the Gov't has, if we're speaking specifically about Shanghai, the amount of revenue that comes in from virtually everything that is being tax'd, to license plates, vehicle tickets, income tax, etc, and not even adding into the mix of the shenanigans that goes behind the scenes, the amount of physical money in banks that this city has is phenomenal, I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if Shanghai officials or a "fund" didn't donate a jiao to the earthquake disaster, unfortunately China doesn't have FEMA or a Red Cross or any voluntary org. to be compared to the ones we have in the U.S.
It's a shame there are no organizations like this in China, let alone in Shanghai for the public. China has a few years (centuries to decades) to be a leading mecca in comparison to an industrial/capitalist country.
About your friend, it is 20th here in Boston, did he leave China or was that issue resolved? From what he said, when the officers showed him the Passport and the expiration date of the Visa, did they "modify" the ending date? or was it just coincidental that it was a week+ before it expires? (I'm assuming he left and didn't renew?).
Aric, your really getting great news and vlogs here, but its just a pity that its dealing with alot of negative issues and having your 2 friends recently being "forced" out of China. Lets get some footage of some Happy Kittens playing in Fuxing Park or something, actually that would probably be degrading with owners not picking up their pet's leftovers and kicking them.
We chose to live here, but I'm damn sure that one man or even a few can change even this society. Great info as always.-

There's always an option to cancel the olympics so the buildings can be used as shelters while the devastated areas are rebuilt. stop laughing....

stefan_boston - yeah, he had to be out on the 18th, so he left. Am sure he's been busy back home re-telling this story to everyone, but hopefully we can get him here on the forum. Money? Yeah, they got it - like you said, everything comes with a large unmarked pricetag. The negativity brings me down as well, but I promised to vlog on exactly what was happening over here and unfortunately, this is it...
aschneider - human well-being over a worldwide podium to announce China's power? you must be joking!
