The Gypsies of Rome are being pushed out of the shadows - out of their homes - and into a spotlight they have never wanted. With immigration from Romania soaring in Italy in the last few years, concerns for security have increased in the Eternal City. Local government is reacting to crime bulldozing shantytowns than in the last few months have attacked the spine of the city, the river Tiber. We followed the destiny of different Roma at a very uncertain time for their community.

What a shame...There is a better option than putting them into the streets. These 9 month villages sound like the plan and it wouldn't split up the families like the government wanted to.
A good friend of mine in Bern is related to the great guitarist Django Reinhardt who was a gypsy. He himself is a gypsy as well and is a musician peace activist too. I have no problem with his lifestyle and he is a loving human being as is his family.
Italy should have more compassion...I'm really surprised at the Italians. -
The current Roman response is a typical 'conservative', authoritarian knee jerk which makes problems worse. It doesn't address causes; it simply shifts responsibility and, ultimately, location. A people denied jobs based on prejudice can hardly be blamed for being poor. During Ronald Reagan's depression of some 2 years (the worst since the Great Depression) jobless people found themselves living in squalid tents under freeway overpasses in Houston, TX! Like the Roman establishment now, GOP poohbahs and R. Reagan himself blamed the victims of his fiscal incompetence. Reagan called them 'mentally ill'. Right wings everywhere will always blame immigrants though it is most often 'establishment' governments themselves to blame --NOT the victims. In this case, how many 'tent cities' would simply dissapear overnight if residents had jobs? Denying them jobs and shelter is stupid, non-productive, and will most certainly make things worse.
To be perfectly clear, let's put it this way: a society denies an entire class jobs and then blames that class for NOT having jobs or money! It doesn't get any more stupid than that. -
What a grand video this is....It shows that the camera and related technology that we are so lucky to have at this small moment in time can be so powerful.....No one on this planet was given the choice of their exterior color, their parents or position in society when they drew their first breath..... This video gives someone like myself that has had every advantage possible......the opportunity to see things around the world that are both...beautiful.....and sickening....when you see the brilliant camera work and editing in a place like Rome........it makes you realize.....Humans have been riding the elevator of existence for so long........we have traveled so far......we have gone ........no where...I hope the length of this video does not stop people from watching.........throw in thirteen minutes of commercials and put it on regular television and all would watch.....figure that out....this shows the power of something like Current.......Golden Ruler.....Johnnie Hargrave

Very eye opening. I have a very limited understanding of the Gypsy community and it’s a shame that others shun them so.
-
Reality when civilization hits nature living. People don't know how to live and the home land government doesn't educate on living. Governments, bureaucrats with money are the cause of this.
-
Pwdskir, in order to truly understand the Gypsy culture and the reasons why they are persecuted, one needs to know their history. This website offers a very comprehensive account of both their history and their persecution: http://www.geocities.com/~Patrin/pariah-contents.htm
There you will learn that they were enslaved much earlier than were Africans in America, and for much longer than Africans in America.-

Thanks for the important link Vierotchka! I will watch it a little late in the day while I am resting from my bike ride.
All kinds of people are suffering under this brutal system. I hope we will all flourish when people like Al Gore and Obama get into leadership. I have a feeling with free internet communication, green and peaceful motivation there are very simple solutions to all of our problems...we need to throw off the choking hold of these Corporates...it's time for change!-

keithponder, if you read up about them and their history on the website to which I posted a link - http://www.geocities.com/~Patrin/pariah-contents.htm - you'll discover that they have indeed been hung, castzrated, separated and raped the way African Americans have been, and for considerably longer than 400 years. It is a form of genocide (coupled with exploitation - slavery), I agree, and it is indeed terrible and wrong, and I get very angry and combative when people cast aspersions and racist insults & lies on and about them - as I do when people say the exact same kind of insulting things about African Americans or any other "race" (for me, there is only one race, the human race). But Gypsies and African Americans are those who have suffered the most, and still do.

Let us not spend too much time debating who our ancestors and ourselves have treated the worse....the list is endless....you may think you had nothing to do with harming anything....you are the last link in your ancestor chain.....whatever they did...good or bad....is part of you.....if you permit an atrocity....it becomes part of your spirit.....We are involved in a great race....the Human one......we should quit falling down and staying.........running the wrong direction.....awareness is critical.....this video brings awareness...I hope more and more people will document things they are surrounded by...good and bad.....I thank each and every one of your God's for it.......Golden Ruler......Johnnie Hargrave...................................

You did a great job with this video! I always cringe when I hear these government officials talk about assimilation and the unwillingness of certain immigrant groups of embracing local culture.
Roma people draw from a rich cultural heritage and they have incorporated elements and traditions from all these nations across Europe who've hosted them.
There's a great documentary I saw a couple of years back called "Latcho Drom" you can find a couple of clips on YouTube, but if you ever get a chance of buying or watching this film please do so. -
Great post, very informational. It's sick what groups of people will do to other groups of people with less power.

I am ashamed of my race sometimes. I have performed services for the gypsie community in my part of the country and they as a people are misunderstood in this country, as are many other people of different races and life practices, these people are inherintly untrusting until they have a reason to trust you, once the people in particular had done bussiness with me they took my word as part of who i was, they struggled as a group and i watched them grow and become individualy independent but the sense of family never changed they lived as a community protecting and supporting one another. Many people do not trust these people do to bad press about organized crime within there community's but look at our own government, We have theives and people not to be trusted running our country, do not judge because these folks are struggling in there own time and place where ever they are on this earth. Many people in this country do not trust gypsies but i know them as a hard working people outside of the palm readers ha, ha try to understand the struggle , this helps immensley i hope it is viewed by many.
