In the future; there will be cars that run on something other than fossil fuels, energy self sufficient homes that actually produce more energy that they use and structures that literally aid the environment instead of merely masking their own carbon footprints.
The future is now! Actually the future has been here for while now. If global warming, drastic climate change and rising seas aren't enough to get people on board the green movement perhaps $5+ per gallon gas will do the trick.
With existing technology a basic home can be retrofitted with a solar energy system that not only powers the home but feeds excess power back to the grid. In effect turning individual homes into their own power plants. Imagine the all the homes in California acting in unison as a single power plant. It would literally be able to power the surrounding states as well.
There are farm owners with wind turbines that sell energy back to the grid as we speak. Wave energy is in place in parts of Europe. All these technologies are readily available to us right now. The U.S. enjoys a mostly temperate climate, has vast open wind blown planes and is bookended by the two largest bodies of water in the known universe. Foreign oil dependency is simply a corporate/political ploy to maintain the status quo and benefit the few at the cost of the masses.
What's it going to take to get the oil monkey off our backs? How about this, you want to win the war on terror? We can put a serious dent in their funding if we stop buying their oil. It won't cripple them because China will continue to consume mass quantities but they can do it without our money once we close out the current loans and end the interest payments.
Truly what has to happen before we decide to step into the future?

I think when people see gas hit above $6.00 and when the effects of Peak Oil and Global Warming become apparent in their everyday lives, they will start wo switch immediately.
Of course, by then it will be too late. =|
Start to talk to people you know, tell them to invest in alternate energies. -
If we get a head start now it won't be as bad... If we wait to the last minute we won't have enough time and resources to rebuild our infrastructure and allow for the transition away from fossil fuel. We can do it, we have to do it, and its not a bad thing, either! Our lives will be better, and so will those of all the others we share this planet with...

i wonder how many of these we could of built in the usa for 5 trillion dollars. i dont have a calculator but sounds like alot
-
Marijuana (hemp) contains 70% curd plant material, where corn is 35% - why are they not useing this instead - then milk prices would go up - paint wouldnt be toxic because we could then use the seeds for the oils in paint - paper too? omg?! you mean we could stop killing trees if we used hemp? its embarrasing how we've hindered ourselves by allowing the government to continue to make money off of us.
-
Well at about $15 billion a copy with $5 trillion to play with we could have stamp out about 30 of them.
-
Johannah great point - i think i heard that at some point the US governmnet banned the growth of hemp as reactioonary measur eto the marijuana 'epidemic' but that is a great point and that law should be repealed asap.

im just glad to see that this conversation is happening - the market will respond to our uproar so keep th talk going
what i really hate is how all the car companies put out all this great technology as concept cars - why dont they role this technology out - i read today about Audi's new plug in hybrid and i f they came out today they would corner the market.-

I hate all the talk by presidential candidates calling for 40 miles per gallon by 2020. How about 40mpg by yesterday? Europe and Japan are already there. 40mpg by 2020 is like asking for a computer with a 40GB hard drive by 2020, common computers already have 100GB hard drives.

We are going to hit $6 a gallon, and way beyond that.
It's going to get worse and worse every year. -
It will hit 6.00 within a year. It isn't because of a shortage it is speculators that are causing the price to go up. Just like they did Rice. OPEC is not going to lower the price any time soon. They want it to effect the election. They want the Republicans out of there. Because we are blowing up their part of the world. After the election they will lower it some. One can only hope that the speculators that bought lots of futures in oil gets wiped out. But, no matter what we need to get off oil ASAP, it is destroying the environment. We need to go into emergency mode and build solar and wind farms and install solar panels on our houses. We need to encourage our car makers to build electric and hybrid cars. We have to invest in a fast rail system across country with arteries north and south. This all needs done yesterday.

Well I put flourecent bulbs around my house so thats a start I guess! Something greats gonna come out soon though, I saw that Honda Commercial about their Hydrogen Car, with the secret agent dudes fighting with water baloons!! haha that was great

Kati_kat: it already *is* the last minute. Bush has been waggling his ears at the "terrorists" instead of focussing on real infrastructure and long-term health and education and sustainability problems at home. And while the cat was away, the mice got fat and lazy and got the diabeetus....
-
The oil barons wont allow it, as they own and control banks/Federal reserve, and i guess America in large. The American public wont see that they dont need oil to survive, no matter how much gas costs.

Johannah, couldn't agree more!
Hemp will save this planet, it is the first and one of the only steps we need to take to prevent and correct most of the worlds problems, including but not limited to: mold free domiciles, food and essential oils, and anything that is not silicate or metallic.
Bah, drilling for fuel is so primitive and barbaric. I hope these new homes of the future will be made predominantly from hemp, otherwise they WILL be too expensive to be cost-effective...

If there is any upside on the rising cost of gas is the motivation to switch to other alternatives. It's sad, but seems like we are not willing to make drastic changes until the water is up to our neck and we are about to drown, metaphorically speaking.
-
I'm all about solar power homes.
-
Solar fields are the future!
-
I firmly believe that as a whole, people are stupid - but only SO stupid. Eventually we come around and correct our mistakes. Hopefully we'll give ourselves enough time to do it in this case.
-
We might in all new construction require 2X6 exterior walls so they can have more insulation making them easier to heat and cool. I believe Oregon already has this requirement. Seems kind of silly to build something that lasts as long as a house and not build it to be fuel efficient.

I think there should be a $1 per gallon gas tax, which can be used towards developing sustainable power. This will also have the effect of lowering people's expectations of cheap gas (which it still is in this country). There is no one solution to this problem--wind power is only good as long as there is a strong wind, likewise with solar. But if used in conjunction with each other, I think it would be pretty easy to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels.
PS-No more coal!!! -
but if we dont pay too much for our gas, then how will dubai ever finish all those neato billion dollar projects they are working on
