House panel subpoenas Karl Rove

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday served a subpoena on former top Bush aide Karl Rove, the panel announced.

The committee ordered Rove to appear July 10 to testify on allegations he was a key player in pressing the Justice Department to dismiss some U.S. attorneys and to prosecute Democrats

It had authorized the subpoena earlier, but only delivered it Thursday after Rove's attorney said he would not appear voluntarily, Chairman John Conyers, D-Michigan, said in a written statement.

The Democratic-controlled Congress has been engaged in battle for months with the White House over information about the dismissal of the attorneys and the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, a Democrat.

Current and former White House aides have refused to testify, citing executive privilege.

  • The Republicans have an ace they can play if the heat gets too hot. Sen. Lieberman is currently an Independent after losing his bid for the Democratic congressional seat. If he switches to Republican, which all but already has the balance of power would shift back to Republican hands from that point until the Nov. elections. All the committee chairmanships would change hands and all legislation and investigations would come to a grinding halt.

  • He probably knows as much as Condi Rice, if not more, and will be crucial for needed information. Now, we'll either discover just how loyal he still is to GWB or how far he's willing to go to save his own butt. Stay tuned.

  • I wonder if it will amount to anything.

He destroyed all the emails. He rarely wrote anything down that could be used to incriminate him.

    Do they really have anything?

Yeah, their gonna ask him some questions but at the end of the day can they really prove anything? Is this just for show?

They'll ask, "Did you illegally fire those people?"

To which Rove will answer, "Nope."

    And then.....what?

  • It's just the first step. "Mister" Rove will testify and most likely not tell the truth. His own testimony will set him up for perjury charges.

  • Lest we forget what eventually brought down Gonzales was the brazen, unjustifiable stonewalling of Alberto Gonzales during the U.S. Attorney hearings. This clip was regarding the testimony of James Comey and the extraordinary late-night hosipital bed visit to swindle a weakened man into shredding the Constitution.

I expect similarly damning incidences to occur during Rove's hearing. Everyone here at Current better crack their knuckles and make sure that this story stays alive and start connecting the dots. This is nothing less than an organized crime syndicate, all the secrets are hiding in plain sight, just waiting to be exposed to the mass of Americans. Unfortunately we can't trust on the traditional media to report on much more than bowling scores, haircuts, and of course the odd random white teenage girl kidnappings.

  • They will get him for lying to congress as he tries to protect the other players. He won't do jail time. But should think seriously before travel outside the US. They will arrest and try him for war crimes outside our boarders.
  • Wake me when the headline reads "Karl Rove Behind Bars"

  • Yes!

This overuse of executive privilege is well...an overuse of executive privilege.

I think I was pretty clear on that one.

  • Karl Rove is a pompous ass... a war criminal and worse. He and his ilk are nothing more than sociopaths wielding power and control they stole from the unsuspecting..they are without human conscience. May they pay dearly in this life, and the next.

I keep thinking they have gone away already..they keep popping back up...I have heard that saucers of beer can be helpful.

  • Congress should subpoena others who were involved also. Their testimony should be on record for rebuttal before Karl Rove testifies.

How many people are going to risk perjury for Karl Rove. Leave the best criminal for last. Use the testimony of others against him.

I hope to see hearings right up till November. Some may call it a witch hunt? I call it American Justice in action. Oh, I know I'm dreaming, they don't want to convict real criminals. It's tooo haard!

  • Wouldn't it be great if they could just strap this guy in the chair, give him the truth serum shot, then, when he tells the truth, go ahead and fry him on the spot...

Noooo...that would be far too humane...he needs to suffer more... like he's made this nation and the rest of the world suffer...

I am, actually, very non-violent...just dreaming...

  • The problem with our judicial branch is that power was removed from it by the president's use of 'signing statements'...Legislators are just beginning to regain their power.

It's not that Democrats are without testicles or testosterone, my friend Danny, it's that not enough Americans took an active part in the Democratic process in the early days of this administration, although several saw beyond the smokescreen, and allowed the travesty of justice and bastardization of our government to a pseudo-Fascist dictatorship.

Bush and Cheney are guilty of stealing our government, aided by people like Rove and Rice.

They should be tried for treason, not merely impeached. Then there's the subject of crimes against humanity (remember, they hung Saddam Hussein for killing 130 villagers).

  • We are at war. Our government voted to suspend the constitution. I don't think any Dems want to find OUT what would, could, happen if our new dictator gets backed to the wall with attempts to do any impeaching.

  • Did YOU vote to suspend the Constitution? I certainly did not! My representative did not!

I think that the ADMINISTRATION, not our government, did that by hook and crook.

Bait and Switch. Smiling face, knife in back.

Whatever you wish to call it, but it nevertheless is not my government.

By the way, Dems and Repubs and Independents and Greens and Liberty...are all part of the government, and we face the consequences of what this ADMINISTRATION has done and will do. It's time to stop it from starting another war, this time with Iran. A good article written in 2003 appears on my blog, naming names and countries responsible for the War in Iraq (2nd time around)... http://www.navyafrhspook.blogspot.com
