This is a good promotion for the Second Amendment.

A Missouri car dealership is offering new vehicle buyers the choice of a free gun or $250, MSNBC reports.

"To help spur sales," says MSNBC's Dara Brown, the western Missouri dealer made the offer of a gift certificate for a free handgun, or money for gas.

"The town's police chief," Brown adds, "says the promotion is perfectly legal."

This video is from MSNBC, broadcast 21 May 2008.

  • How is getting a gun with a new car insane?

  • Because now you are equipped for a drive by.
  • I seriously doubt the type of people who run around committing drive by shootings come by their firearms from a car dealership. If its legal then it means you have to submit to a background check. I know its strange but its by no means insane.

The thing that pisses me off is that some people choose to look at me differently when I tell them I own a gun and are saving up for my concealed weapons permit. even though I own a gun I still hate bush, neocons and racists. So Marilynn what I like to ask is why would you make such a ridiculous statement like that?

  • interesting bit here. Wonder whats gonna happen when the free gun falls into the wrong hands. Then again at least the rest of the customers can shoot back.

  • The dealership owner really is just making an ass of himself, saying that he is throwing it in obamas face by giving away hand guns with a vehicle. All he is doing is ramming that point home that midwesterners really do cling to their guns and bibles. Hell maybe next he will give out free bibles as well.

    Finally.

If I get the TruCoat, do I get bullets too?

  • More people die from car accidents, alcohol and prescription drugs than guns, but you don't see lawmakers trying to take away or limit the use of those do you? Don't be fooled by the media hype whenever a school gets shot up. Tragic things happed all day everyday, you probably just don't hear about it.

The Bill of Rights, particularly the second amendment, is what makes America different from the rest of the world. Without it, our country would be just another banana republic run by a third rate junta.

Education is key. My uncle, a former Texas Ranger, teaches a concealed handgun course here in Houston. Most of my family, even the women, are gun owners. I learned how to shoot a gun when I was thirteen.

Besides, the gun in the video looks like a .22 caliber. It's not like they are giving away shotguns or anything.

  • Consider the source, many in Butler, MO already pack heat and this promo will likely only bring people from other regions to bask in the headline folly.

  • Ricky84 "So Marilynn what I like to ask is why would you make such a ridiculous statement like that?"

So Ricky, why do you feel the need to carry a concealed weapon? Why not just pick better friends?
  • What? How am I supposed to rant if I have no idea what that means? Are you saying my friends are gang bangers or they’re all punks because they cannot protect me? Any way you slice it, it’s still up to you to protect yourself. It’s pretty impractical to believe that you could or should rely on acquaintances to keep you safe. I have plenty of friends and most of them are big guys. I myself am 6’4 200+. Yet I have a gun because I know from personal experience you have to provide your own protection.

Anyways I believe based on the price and the size of the gun that is probably a 9 mm short. That would make it a self defense weapon and not the “drive by” weapon of choice.

  • I really don't understand the motivation behind this. He wants to get revenge by proving him right? It doesn't seem like guns are the main issue of this topic but rather the stupidity of the action.

  • Are we REALLY sick and tired of all of this gun violence that we see? I know I am. As an activist for a less violent world, the way I see it is that we have a great deal of work to do in order to reduce all of this gun violence and it's not going to happen unless we take action and take it NOW.

What should we do? well whoever is serious and wants to actually do SOMETHING instead of nothing, the first step on the ladder begins in our very own homes, the second in our classrooms, via non-violence/conflict resolution classes.

We need to educate our children on how to treat one another with respect, understanding and tolerance and we need a complete mindset change as we relate to relying upon guns and for that matter ALL lethal weapons to solve our problems and our differences. We need to replace lethal weapons with less than lethal weapons until guns filter down to where they become merely objects to be found in history books and collections. This is the ONLY way less people will be maimed and/or killed and our future generations will be able to perpetuate this beautiful planet that we so cherish.

If I could re-write the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this is precisely what I would love to see:

"We, the people of the United States, in order that we shall have the right to preserve a State free for all races, shall achieve this end by the use of less-lethal weaponry only for our continued survival as human beings. This free State entails our personal self-defense as well as our right to our food consumption. In keeping with current government law, if we so choose to possess a less-lethal weapon (be it either upon our persons or within our private homes), we are obligated to store these aforementioned weapons plus any ammo relating to its use in a manner which will serve to protect the welfare of a minor child."
