I guess what's most surprising is that we seem to be moving backwards. I remember one of the highlights from 7th grade sex ed, (which for me was in 1996) was having to watch a deliciously 80's cartoon video on physical attraction, puberty and masturbation among other things. I don't think the subject of masturbation was new to anyone watching the video. I did sense a certain relief from multiple students over the idea that masturbation wasn't just some accidental perversion but rather a biologically natural age-old tradition, something to be encouraged if you wanted to know your body better. Why America is trying to invoke these archaic puritanical ideals of pleasure being a sin or taboo is beyond me. Clearly, they are not learning from their mistakes judging by their teen pregnancy rates. I think maybe those adults are cranky from a lack of pleasure, a life without masturbation would be enough to make anyone spiteful.

You know what's really sad? I graduated high school in 2002, not too long ago, and the girls who ended up pregnant or with std's in high school were the ones who's parents wouldn't let them go to "that day" of health class in freshmen year.

Are we really still debating this in 2008? Most kids come about it (no pun intended) naturally anyway. I know I was relieved to learn there was nothing "wrong" with me when we discussed it in health class 15 years ago. Why give these kids more of a complex by trying to pretend sex/masturbation isn't pleasurable?

The old saying holds true in that you reap what you sow, although regrettably the delusional dysfunctional parents who are screeching out "not in MY school" are usually the ones who aren't dealing with their kids getting pregnant. Or, if they are, they would much rather hide it and continue with their cultish delusion that their kids are these perfect angels that should be treated like china dolls.

The point of sex-ed is to educate us so that we don't believe in the sexual dogma our ancestors had come up with in the previous centuries. Therefore, I don't see why all the material shouldn't be covered. Better to have us kids intelligently acknowledge the details of masturbation than for us to come up with an excuse for it ourselves.

I think teaching sex ed at that age is just what we need! How can anyone oppose this, honestly. I graduated from Wawasee High School and we are in the top ten in the nation for drop out rates, most due to pregnancy! Our high school doesn't teach sex-ed until sophomore year, and the funny thing is it's all the freshman who are knocked up, and they come that way from the middle school, at least the majority of pregnant teens. I mean, its a serious issue and no one wants to talk about it or address it! If we don't start at an earlier age it will just continue. (and by the way I am one of those people who dislike kids and think the world is suffering and will continue to suffer from overpopulation) Anyway, there's my 2 cents. :)

Yes this type of material should be incorperated in the class as are kid's should be informed.Just look @ the numbers of teen pregnantcies they do not lie.

To think that the rate of teenage pregnancy is connected to the lack of classes on masturbation is just more stupidity to get attention or ratings. This is not called professional journalism.

Most of these children have been exposed to porn , to MTV and everything else from an early age.

Before posting this king of nonsense, you should compare data between different public schools who teach masturbation as well as with private and Xstian schools who proably don't

In addtion, you need to explain why teen pregnancy
was not such a problem years ago in this country.

Are you going to explain shootings in school due to the lack of training with gun and rifles

When you have raised a daughter through teenage years, you can speak.

Right now, what do you know to speak on the subject ?

    Basically nothing.

Did you have any class on integrity in your high school

    Shame on you !!!

Whar is everyone in such a fluff? Sex education is a must in schools, and appropriate lesson for the age of the children and young adults. Many families never reach that type of conversation as thorough as it should be. Children learn most of it in the streets, and that information is usually is sadly lacking. We are talking about the lessons that will help them understand their own bodies and the changes that they are going through. Why is that so scary? And if only a few come to think of their own power in making good choices. It will have been a good cause!

sigh... I can't stand all those damn super conservative parents who petition to remove certain books out of schools and do s--t like this.

it's really lame that we can't openly talk about this stuff! It's natural!!! I mean if we didn't have sex then...well....we wouldn't BE here! At my school we talk about the ways to have healthful sex! The people come in and they tell us how AWESOME SEX IS.....it's like HOLY CRAP!...then once they know that grabbed your attention they add, in the right environment (aka the marriage bed.) they talk about goals in life and they don't tell you not to have sex, then throw you condoms! I'm not saying that this will solve all the problems of teens having sex, or that this is even an option for public schools, (which i used to go to, so i know both sides of the fence VERY well.) I just think that we need to focus more on the value of virginity and sexual content than on how we can get sex toys to "pleasure ourselves!"
our youth is soooo much more valuable than the next cheap thrill, but the media and "role models" of today are very much like the sardonic satire in the movie MEAN GIRLS, where the little girl flashes the tv screen....we are becoming this! I'm not saying that I'm a saint or whatever, but really, we need to teach sexual education in a manner that releases unbiased information out so that kids can make choices themselves. Tell kids ABOUT abortion, ABOUT masturbating, ABOUT gay/straight lifestyles and allow them to decide how they view a subject. I would NEVER do what those texted books say..."ask your parents about their views on masturbating..."ew...hell no...thanks but no thanks....my grandmother's on fire....and imma have to take a rain check....but talk to the kids. they have a right to know, just like everyone else, because if our school systems don't start to control the balance of the knowledge in the kids, then the media will continue to push out the good...and input all the bad!

Generation of ignorance is continuing to reign. The same generation that ignored; our oil problem, our environment and the crash of our economy. Pretending to be naive isn't working anymore. What now?

Most of you are under-estimating these parents. On their website they expose the fact that Planned Parenthood condoms have been ranked to be the lowest in quality by Consumereports which is hghly respected.

IThis brings the following question: Is planned Parenthood really concerned by teen pregnancy or want more abortions ?

To think that these parents care less for the life and well being of their OWN CHILDREN than the government or the media is twisted thinking.

Most parents would give their own life for their children

Planned Parenthood has been exposed for covering child predators.

Our school had sex-ed day last week and 50% of the class opted out. Half because the content seemed less important than taking the day to do personal errands, half because the parents didn't want their child exposed to the idea of sexually transmitted diseases and the possibility of sex before marriage. Yes, I do wonder which children will be the first to become sexually active and possibly to have unplanned pregnancies or to contract a sexually transmitted disease. No, I don't think it will be the ones with a reliable education on the topic.

What does our school means ?

Based on what you wrote 50% of the parents or students do not agree with the message that was being taught.

Did the other students came because both of their parents were working ?

Did the school got parents from both points of you together before the program or just pushed one message.

People do not accept top down, one way message.
The era of ABC, CBS, NBC is gone.

We had a preliminary meeting with the parents and the public health nurse to discuss what would be presented at the meeting and to give our input. It was not "top down"--it was a straight forward presentation of information about how to avoid STDs, HIV, AIDs, and how to screen media messages meant to persuade children to do or to buy things that might not be good for them. Potentially controversial topics, such as abortion, masturbation, even contraception (other than to mention that barrier methods of contraception--such as condoms--can reduce but not eliminate the possibility of disease transmission) were not discussed. By the way, we as a community support "families' values" as opposed to a one-size-fits-all-fundamentalist-Christian definition of what "family values" should be.
