Ron Paul still runs for president

Image...
"John McCain may have clinched the Republican nomination on March 4, but for Ron Paul and his 800,000-strong army of supporters, the GOP primary isn't over ... at least not yet. Seventeen days and two primaries later, the Texas congressman is vowing to continue his campaign. In fact, he tells NEWSWEEK that his candidacy is "indefinite" and says that - unless the Arizona senator drastically alters his campaign platform - McCain can forget about a Ron Paul endorsement.

Paul, with a mere 14 (or 42, depending on who's counting) delegates in his column, cannot possibly overtake McCain for the nomination; the GOP front runner has well over the 1,191 delegates needed to secure his party's mantle. A March 7 speech in which Paul admitted that "victory in the conventional political sense is not available in the presidential race" led many media outlets to report his withdrawal.

But what they missed was what Paul went on to say: that he does "still encourage all efforts to gain the maximum number of votes and delegates in all the remaining primaries." Flagging pols typically run into fund-raising hurdles, but thanks to massive online fund-raising efforts, Paul still has a hefty war chest. As of the end of last month, he still had more than $5 million in the bank. In Paul's view, he's in second place: his campaign Web site displays a graphic of the 11 original GOP candidates, nine of whom have big red X's drawn across their faces ("There were 11. Now there are two", reads the caption)".

Go Paul, R3volution?? its actually Go Paul and the U.S back to 1776, and chaos everywhere..Wild Wild West,Wild Wild United States.

Post-1776 U.S. versus "1984"? Sorry, Stop_Their_War, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with your prediction that more sound fiscal policies, staunch defense of civil liberties and a non-interventionist foreign policy would throw us into some "Wild Wild West" scenario. We might get there if we keep heading down this path of dollar devaluation, turning a blind eye to the constitution and committing to policing the world/nation building.

I'm glad that Ron is staying with it. Republicans shouldn't have to be shackled exclusively to McCain.
    Viva Diversity!

Even if all of that were true, it wouldn't remove the fact that Ron Paul would rather have us titled "The Loosely Affiliated Principalities of North America, Minus Canada" than "The United States of America."

Ron Paul would make a great VP for Obama. Bipartisanship would be great for the U.S.

Nice idea Manu. I would like that. Only problem is they have a few conflicting interests...

    But I like that.

i'll say this for Ronny boy - he wouldn't have a Wright or a Hagee he'd have to make excuses for / banish / dis-associate from etc.

I use to like Ron Paul, but after reading his views on religion and government, I have changed my mind.

I agree with some of Ron Paul's ideas and disagree with others, but it would be nice to have more than one 'choice'.

Ron Paul is a likeable guy, and seems reasonable when you listen to him talk in the media... but I suspect he carefully chooses which of his beliefs to publicly proclaim, because when I read some of his other views, I am appalled.

So, why IS he still in the race?? I've heard he's going to make a show of... something (??) at the Republican convention -- anything else?? Is he on a mission, like Huckabee, to get libertarian views into mainstream discussion, or...????

  •

@ shelchak, exactly. To keep the libertarian voice in the public sphere. This is a case where the message is bigger than the man. For him to quit and surrender his principles let alone the money and time his supporters have contributed would be sacrificing the entire movement. None of the other remaining candidates represent his message.

I am no supporter of the Republican Party. In fact, I have been a consistent supporter of Democrats my whole life and would most likely be voting for Obama if it weren't for Paul. Sadly, I can discern no difference in either of the two controlling parties. They are both spending us to death and passing it on to future generations. They are both committed to corporatism which is steadily morphing into fascism. They are both intent on sending us overseas in search of monsters to slay. They are both interested in keeping the political discourse compartmentalized into the same cycle of "red" versus "blue" muck to maintain the status quo.

Unfortunately, I will be voting against my strong pro-choice beliefs this year. Perhaps one day I will have a pro-choice libertarian to support. :-)

    @ malathion, great point!

I hear people say that they don't like the way things are going and that we need real "change", but then settle for slight change that will result in little or nothing once watered down through beurocratic process. Ron Paul, though his ideas seem extreme, offers this change. What better way to see actual change in our country than to base our decisions on constitutional principles? Is that not meeting both liberal and conservative agendas? Don't both parties and all sane American's at least agree on Constitutional rights, freedoms, liberties, or at least awareness?

HE IS REAL HOPE AND REAL CHANGE! I am VERY excited to hear this.

Jesus Christ, why are so many people Rontards?

He's not offering anything but rehashed classic liberal bullshit.

He's just a flashback from the late 19th century and his policies don't reflect in any way the reality of the world we currently live in.

The man's a fool, an honest fool which is admirable. Government needs honesty and morality these days. But he is still a FOOL.

But for Christ's sake, get _over_ him conspiracy nuts. This man would FUCK YOU OVER if he became president! NONE of his policies benefit anyone but those who can afford to have capital, which is none of you. Oh yeah, enjoy massive depressions under the gold standard, total international hatred for our country once we pull out of the U.N. and deny all established trade treaties, total loss of power by the already weak but vastly important organizations such as the EPA and the FDA, MORE not LESS corporate control over this country and over your life, total religious indoctrination (Ron Paul supports home schooling, creationism and abortion for fundies) and a complete guarantee that the U.S. never attempts to solve environmental crises like Global Warming.

"WAKE UP," Rontards. Your revolution has none of your interests and NONE of it is your idea. Stop holding onto this delusion and stand up for what you REALLY care about.
