Hmm, not sure how to feel about this. The part of the article that said they will just produce porn in other states that don't have such taxes seems to fortell that it won't be effective, so it's very hard to have a clear idea about this. Thanks for the news.

with so much free porn on the web , any fool stupid enough to actually buy it deserves to be taxed.
-
People STILL pay for porn?
Wow, how archaic. -
this is disgusting...seriously? lame idea.
do something brave you chicken S***T politicians! Pass Mark Leno's legislation to legalize Industrial hemp growth in California! or maybe even (to a lesser extent...morally much less but not quite a porn tax) lower the drinking age to 18 and open the bars all night in the cities. Running business all night encourages more spending and business income. Oh sorry, less money into police departments for DUI fines but the taxi services get more cash...get creative please not capatilize on something already viewed immoral in the puritanical canon of thought subscribed to by Neo-Cons and bible beaters of the middle of the country.
Oh sad is the day the majority of our tax base comes from Indian casinos and porn...watch 'Idiocracy' , its scary! Lets not go there please? -
Great response, S_Cruzme. Wish I could have verbalized it just as well.

S_Cruzme, we're already there. Carl's Jr has a wicked sense of humor too, with their new slogan "Dont bother me, I'm eating."

they will just move the production out of california and it will hurt the local economy where they shoot the porn now. this is the same when the fedral govt raises taxes on any big buisness they can move there buisness to some other country pay less in taxes and wages and export there product back to the u.s. for larger profits.

Porn is the leading media innovator in technology. When the iPod started playing videos, the porn industry had more videos ready than any other market. The porn industry drives format wars. Taxing them would be a travesty to the media world.
-
No! Don't tax porn! Sex is one of the top if not the top driving factors of human technology! Instead, make weed legal and tax it. I hear the economy in Mendocino is going down from the busts, but I digress.

Eh. I'd just make my own.

Taxing porn isn't going to solve the issue. It's just going to cause another problem. S_Cruzme makes a great point, theres several other things that could be done that are going to be much more beneficial. Industrial hemp growth would be very interesting to see but I don't think that it is going to happen anytime soon. I'm sure lowering the drinking age would be something many underage people would love to see, but again I don't see it happening. They need to come up with something that is going to solve California's problem and be a benefit to the people.
-
Morals via tax. Tax what is morally unacceptable. Brilliant.
-
Excuse me J_Jammer, but the Moral Majority is neither. I don't know about you, but I can tell that there will be riots in the streets if the bill passes... which it won't.

Sarcasm.
There wouldn't be. If there was ever a riot it would have been when they taxed cigarettes heavily. But that didn't happen.

really Neghie??? lmao..

Well, there is a difference between these two points. This bill would be more likely to cause riots, not from the consumers of the actual product, but from people who oppose the high level of immorality behind the bill. The consumers of cigarettes and the consumers of porn probably won't get too pissed off about the tax hike so long as their products are still available.

It shouldn't be taxed at a rate any higher than any other film or video. Give me a break.

Errrrm, exactly how big do people think this industry is suppose to be? How would taxing it significantly help out budget?
Regular films would be a much better idea to tax, their income is much larger. But still not large enough.
The bottom line? Our state spends too much money, a SIGNIFICANT amount of which is lost from corruption. We need to cut back in some areas and vastly overhaul areas in which money is being wasted.
-
Porn is a billion dollar industry and California will love to tap that, the money I mean.
-
hahaha true that
but honestly?
who actually spends money on porn... anyone can easily get it for free on the internet.i don't think putting a 25% tax on sales and production is going to help much of anything.
-
Well we need to pay for all these STDs especially in California.
They have refused federal money for purity education.
Now, they want to raise taxes on sex addition.
They know that increasing taxes on addiction like cigarettes, gambling etc....no one can complain because people feel shamed and do not want other to know
