Indiana Jones movie upsets communists

Members of Russia's Communist Party are calling for a nationwide boycott of the new Indiana Jones movie, saying it aims to undermine communist ideology and distort history. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" stars Harrison Ford as an archaeologist in 1957 competing with an evil KGB agent, played by Cate Blanchett, to find a skull endowed with mystic powers.

It hit Russian screens Thursday.

Communist Party members in St. Petersburg said on a web site this week that the Soviet Union in 1957 "did not send terrorists to the States," but launched a satellite, "which evoked the admiration of the whole world."

Moscow Communist lawmaker Andrei Andreyev said Saturday "it is very disturbing if talented directors want to provoke a new Cold War."

  • Uh, it's a MOVIE. Are they aware of that?

  • Nope that's why they still hold on to USSR

  • Whatever. People are dumb and I can't believe politicians, of any party in any country, would waste their time on things like this. It's all about control. From the food you eat, the water you drink to the tv shows and movies you watch. Governments are becoming more obvious in their obsession with power and control of their people.

Never call for a boycott of a movie. You just make it more popular. Just let it go and then people who didn't want to see it won't feel the need to want to see it just because you told them not to see it.

  • Indiana Jones sucks ass any ways... Boo Hoo.

  • I have to agree with the Communists on this one. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" really does distort history and portrays the struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union as a black-and-white, good vs. evil thing. I'm tired of the whitewashing of history; both the US and USSR did bad things in their efforts to attain the ultimate power of the magical crystal skull.

  • Then I guess you should claim the same thing about the Nazis in the other films.

  • What I'm doing right now is waving my hand over my head and making a "shoo" sound.

  • and indy is an american and in 1957....americans and communists were in conflict...cough cough, cold war....they were the bad guys....jeez...move on.

  • It's not directors that are starting the new cold war, it's our leaders. When Steven Spielberg sets up a missle system in Europe and points it at Russia, and then George Lucus holds a cold war era parade in Moscow to show off his military might... then we can point the finger at them.

But until then it's the world leaders.

  • Ok, so if the Japanese release a film in the U.S. showing us as the aggressors and as war criminals for dropping the bomb on them, don't complain ok? GET OVER IT, as you all are saying.

It IS blatant shit and they do have a legitimate concern. I haven't seen the film, so maybe they are being silly. But knowing American film these days, probably not.

Americans LOVE this idea of good and evil in history, even though it doesn't exist AT ALL.

And yes Jammer, Nazis frequently were depicted as far more evil than they actually were in films made before 1990. As terrible as the Nazis were, not every German in that era was an orc spawned by Sauron the Deceiver.

For all Americans who like the good vs. evil cliche in WWII. You might want to look up the Dresden and Tokyo Fire bombings It just might change your opinion about how war really works.

  • Also, see the Rape of Nanking, and oh yeah, the Holocaust.
No one comes out of war with clean hands, and no one can claim they have, but you tell me which side you'd rather have seen win.

    As to the article:

This is so retarded that I will only spend a few sentences on it.

It's about an American working for the American government during the Cold War, when Russians were the "Bad Guys."

Also, it is Indiana Jones - this is the same movie franchise that brought us face-melting angels of death and Hindu holy men capable of manually removing your heart from your chest without killing you.

It is a fun movie, a fun franchise, and anyone making a stink over it is either politically motivated, over-sensitive, or perhaps has a huge corn cob stuck up their ass.

I've seen plenty of movies with anti-American/ anti-capitalism themes, many of them blatant, and I don't even have the urge to whine about it...

    Boo.
    Moving on.

  • sounds to me like the communists are just being a bunch of babies and people that people that sympathize with them are ignorant.

  • Most people don't consider that a lot of Americans get all their ideas from watching tv or films.

Hence why there is so much support for torture, thanks a lot 24.

  • Why are you all taking this seriously? Who cares what the commies in Russia say? They aren't important or influential. The country is run by Putin and his cabal of ex-KGB and oligarchs. Every media outlet but a handful are the equivalent FOX News. We Americans decry the lack of serious political discourse, but in Russia the primary role of the media is to show pictures of Putin with his shirt off.

  • It is a movie, and the makers of it are not tring to put anyone people down.

  • I saw the movie Friday and it doesn't whitewash it. It shows the nuclear testing in NM that the US government did and it certainly didn't show it in a positive light either. I think it is ridiculous to constantly try to boycott movies, especially ones where the story is FICTIONAL. Movies used to be enjoyed not seen as political statements where people have to take sides. This world has jumped the shark when THIS is more important on a news station than climate change or war that is REAL.

  • Yawn........so what.
    Paratus
  • uh, it was set in the 50s...
    and it's fiction...

and i don't think anyone involved with the movie would care either way.

"oh no! what will we do without our communist audience?!"
  • i don't care . the whiny little bitch communist officials can burn in hell - and i'd be more than happy to help send them there .

  • The communists are angry? Ha ha. The people who should really be insulted are the People of Peru who were basically told that their ancestors were too stupid to build those structures without alien help. Europe is filled with beautiful structures but when it comes to non European cultures we are told aliens must have helped them, now that's insulting.

  • I think the ultimate tragedy is that anyone, communist or otherwise, can believe that an Indiana Jones movie will be logged into the annals of time as historical fact.
    mako2424
  • Well, at least jade_azul16 got it...

  • That just makes the movie like 10x more BADASS!!!
  • Dont like it? Dont watch it. Simple. No need to try to ruin it for everyone else.

  • Geez if you're gonna pick on the Indiana Jones movies, the worst aspect of them is the HORRIBLE representation of archaeology.... The movies are ridiculous sensationalist pieces of entertainment, period.
    Kati_kat
  • Why is this even news? It's a movie for chrissake.
    Julie_Soller
  • jeez its a only a film..!! If you don't like the storyline, don't watch it! End of.!

  • Easy communists, we don't mean to offend.

  • I don't remember refrigerators being made out of lead in the fifties, and Edd Byrnes should be upset that they kept using his combing his hair as a fad, and yes Peru should be upset, since instead of filming in Peru they used Hilo, Hawaii as a back drop, and last but not least of course we were raised with the phrase, "Better off dead than red."

  • AH hahahahahahahahahahahahaha this is to funny......political correctness has gone to far
    humanpasta
  • I saw the movie and they (Lucas & Spielberg) portray the communists as being smarter than the CIA, but also a wee bit paranormal crazy. Lucas also exposes the craziness and witch-huntness of the 1950's McCarthyism.

    Thus,
I give dis movie 4 hammers and sickles
    or 4 red stars.

  • They know it's a movie and not a Fox News special report, right?
    eldamon
  • Indy likes Ike and not Stalin. Was that supposed to be a surprise?
  • Well, yeah it distorts history. A lot of the archaeological stuff was based on truth but then maybe twisted a little to make the movie more entertaining. I just can't see how we might try to replace a history book with a Harrison Ford summer popcorn movie.
    ultravphunter
  • Well yeah I was just being a wiseass and having a little fun.
    lindaann
  • Yeah, it's just a movie.

But then, 'The Passion of the Christ' made people angry too....
