AIDS PANDEMIC MARKS QUARTER CENTURY (5/19/08)

HIV was discovered 25 years ago.

The latest statistics on HIV & AIDS in the USA published in March 2008 by the US centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that every day in average over 40 Americans still die from AIDS and over 100 get infected.

Most Americans are not aware and the Media has been silent. Why ?

  • For most ,as long as they don't have it , WHO CARES? I do because i have been battling this disease for more than fifteen yrs., so i have been battling ignorance , discrimination, mis information, lack of education, and all other travisty's an ill person should never go through , it is criminal. But since it's aids society has reared it's ugly head again.Fear ? YES some people would like us to go away. The cdc puts out statistics like they know , but they don't. I know the numbers trust me ,they are much higher. And what about the people in this country that can't get medicine, Because there local governments have all but killed them personaly, when will we learn to love our brothers and sisters not just in africa where it gets headline's but right hear at home, they just want us to go away, but i will not.

  • Numeracy forces me to vote this down. Not sure what you're trying to say with "1,000,000,00" - it's either one hundred million (you're WAY off) or you're accounting for the possibility of partial persons.

    That said, I agree with the sentiment. The answer to your question is relatively simple: the disease primarily affects groups that are considered undesirable or unimportant by the establishment (namely, gays and people in Africa, where the numbers far eclipse those here). The secondary reason is that prevention of the disease requires sex education, which is unpopular with religious conservatives.

    In other words, it's hard to think of a better example of the fundamental immorality of religion than the world AIDS epidemic. Shame all around.

    Presently America is investing 12 X more money on the type of education you recommend in comparaison to "purity" based education.

    Some states like California have rejected federal money for abstinence based sex education.

  • Teaching abstinence does jack against AIDS. Teens are going to have sex and if you don’t provide information to practice safe sex their chance of getting HIV grows significantly. Come on now are you serious?

    I think parents' attitude and examples is a big factor in their children behaviors. Personally, I put my children's education before my morgage and made sure to choose their friends before they were teenagers.

    I did not trust the public schools

    The 12 X funding that I was talking about was for condom/ based sex education. It is not working

    Every day 25000 young people are contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Some will get aids.

    Even if you tell someone that cigarettes is guarantee to kill them, they will smoke.

    The answer to Aids is in real education of the character and virtues.

  • honestly, public education was a blindfold .for me atleast.my high school had a high statistic on teenage pregnancy and teens infected with the H.I.V...virus.figure that.and the growing community really never knew or cared.

  • Puritan school boards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! School boards can be accused of a lot fo things but certainly NOT puritanical. These guys are teaching kids to put condoms on cucumbers, homosexual is ok, everything BUT abstinance. Abstinance does work, it works every time it is used. To blame this on Republicans is mind boggling. Bush has spent more dolllars on AIDS than any previous president. How is this a Republican problem? Statements like this make my hair hurt they are so absurd. I don't know what the answer is but plainly it does not lie in the path that is being taken now in the schools. Perhaps we should change the curriculum to include abstinance. Perhaps we should change the curriculum to make committment, personal responsibility and to stop demonizing traditional relationships. One may dismiss this and say it won't work but look at the headlines of this thread. Is the other way working?

  • I agree that education is the only way to help stop this disease from spreding. I do not believe in abstinance because it is not human nature and not necessary unless your stupid. I don't understand why people don't use protection, but telling kids not to have sex because they can get diseases obvioulsy doesn't work. It's one of those things where the more you say no, the more they will want to do it. Again, it's human nature to have sex. I was surprised to see that people did not know it was a big deal in the United States...it is problem everywhere. Obviously the news doesn't cover it because all people want to hear about is Brittany Spears. I believe that there is a cure for certain strands, but the pharmacudicle companies make too much money off of the treatments.

  • It IS human nature to have sex but it is also necessary to have responsibility. With few exceptions, AIDS is largely a lifestyle disease.

  • I was an educational speaker on this subject and i have been witness to pickets at schools and the opposite , parents who don"t give a shit! The problem is precisley happening before us on this very page. I have letters from parents denouncing my participation in this program and i have letters from those same familys thanking me for heiping there children to understand . there is a puzzle there can you figure it out. I have been thanked by gov. whitmans office for participating in needle exchange measures many years ago only to be shot down by that same office now needle exchange is saving lives.And believe me no one is becoming a junkie because its safer!!!!

  • data depends on testing results ! double your numbers in the private sector that are not exposed to mandatory testing due to exposiore to the system, like jail rehab forced programs, and such far less are those that go for volantary testing because of risky behavior they want to forget about let alone be tested for < then you have figures that are manipulated in the name of pr in many upper crust community's , i have seen it. i have sat on ryan white fund committies in the 90's , consortiums , boards, and the like. get down to it things are shitty and the figures are wrong which makes the story invalid. SORRY THATS JUST MY OPINION>
