Cluster munitions kill children and other civilians long after wars are over--and this week, we have a chance to ban them. 116 countries are in the final stages of negotiation on a cluster bomb ban -- but some are trying to water down the treaty with loopholes, exceptions, and delays. The delegations obstructing a strong treaty in the last few days include the UK, France, Germany, South Africa, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, Japan, Sweden and Switzerland.

I say ban them. These weapons are designed to kill civilians and they don't discriminate between adults or children. There are plenty of other ways to kill people without using these particularly cruel weapons. While we are at it let's ban conventional land mines as well.

Again, we're not fighting anything "big enough" for them to be more effective than a single, more accurate bomb.

Today it's being reported that the UK government is ready to scrap Britain's entire arsenal of cluster bombs, despite opposition from the military.
