Teacher has class vote on whether 5-year-old can stay in class

This is disgusting. A teacher had a class vote on whether or not a 5-year-old, who is in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, would be allowed to stay in class. After allowing all of the boy's classmates to stand up and say what they didn't like about him, the class voted 14-2 to keep him out.

So far, the state is not prosecuting, saying that the incident doesn't meet the criteria for emotional child abuse.

I'm not sure what universe these people are living in, but this certainly is emotional abuse--this poor kid is going to remember this for the rest of his life, and all of the other kids have learned how to treat someone who is different--with cruelty and shame. What kind of country are we living in that this story hasn't inspired nationwide outrage?

    • St Alia... ummm. no offense but no one becomes a preist with the intention of ruining children's lives but.... i'm just throwing out an extreme. i'm sorry this isn't extreme enough to upset you. you do realize that there is actually quite a bit of information on this story if you look beyond this site and yes- this is wrong and she should have publically said she was wrong and stepped down like an adult in a position like this SHOULD do if they are thinking clearly.

    • I'm sure that wasn't her intent, but having experienced being the outcast as a kid, I can attest that it sticks with you. It depends on the child, of course--some people bounce back very easily, others don't.

Also, this was a class of young kids who are very impressionable. It's bad enough for the teacher to make someone feel worthless, but she has basically taught these kids, by example, that it's okay to be cruel to someone who is different than you--and this case, someone who is suffering from a disability. I don't know about you, but if I were a parent, I wouldn't want someone teaching that to my kids.

    • Okay, let's keep level heads here. Yes, I too had a teacher who once made me feel like a sack of worthless shit. But that didn't last more than ten minutes because I realized I wasn't worthless. Anyhow, there are very few facts in this story. And this vote is not the only fact that matters.

And sgwhites, nobody becomes a teacher with the mission of ruining children's lives.
