Butterflies of Uganda is the first stage play dealing with the subject of child soldiers in Africa. It was written by Darin Dahms and Soenke C. Weiss and is nominated for six NAACP (National Association for the Advancement for Colored People) this year, e.g best play, best director. Ceremony: June 30th in Los Angeles.
Butterflies of Uganda received its World Premiere at the Greenway Court Theatre (LA), directed by Mr. Dahms, in September 2007 and the African Premiere in February 2008 and the National Theatre in Kampala, Uganda, directed by Kristin Landholt and Soenke C. Weiss.
Nobel Peace Prize Laureat Archbishop Desmond Tutu about the play: "It is such an important piece of theatre. Everybody must watch it." And Frances Sherwood, O-Henry Award winning writer and Professor at the University of Notre Dame says: "Candid, riveting, and heart-rendering."
Butterflies of Uganda is the story of a little girl, stolen from her home in northern Uganda and forced to fight as a soldier of the Lord's Resistance Army. The story unfolds as a young Ugandan woman discovers the truth about her mother's tragic past and the details of her own conception. It is a deep and moving exploration of maternal compassion and family forgiveness. The Making Of follows Kristin Landholt and Soenke C. Weiss during their production time in Kampala.
