Growing up in a multi-cultural city can play havoc with a person's sense of self. As a Londoner of Asian descent, how do you go about defining yourself when you are confronted with conflicting and contrasting cultures and attitudes every day of your life? Is it the way other people perceive you or through a surrogate source of belonging such as religion, or is there even a need for you to be designated a tag in the first place?

  • Good stuff, Guy!
  • I really enjoyed that video! The interviews are really interesting and your last sentence <<Call me a Londoner>> is a really good ending! And...you helped me out with this video, because I have an oral examination tomorrow about that topic ( I´m from Germany by the way) ! But thats not the reason why I enjoyed it! I like the way you express yourself concerning that "quest for identity" theme.

And you are pretty cute! Hehe...

  • Really great Guy, just shows how people are a product of their surrounding environment, no matter where you are from or what your religion is!

  • Guy has broached an important subject in todays society, especially in London. I commend your film making skills bud, and can't wait for the next instalment. Sometimes things need to be set into perspective, and you did just that. My thanks.

  • thanks guys, appreciate the comments. I don't think I'm alone in having this kind of tug-o-war with identity especially with people who have grown up in London. And I don't think its specifically an ethnic or 'second generational' thing. I do think it's amplified however when you have a sense of, as Nilesh says, a 'dual input' be that nationality or heritage. Interesting isn't it? It's a shame though, I have no idea how to cut this down to around 7 minutes...I wouldn't know if Current would consider it for broadcast.
Do keep watching though, there is more to come!

  • Hey Guy - I think you're best option is to leave this one as it is to be honest. It's definitely worthy of making it to Current TV but I don't think it's worth compromising since you've obviously put so much effort into it. If you're thinking of continuing a thread of similar films, I'd concentrate on them with Current's 5 - 7 minute time frame in mind. Then you never know, they might make it to Current, and Asian Other will be picked up for....shush...Channel 4! :)

Another option is to split Asian Other into a two-part film, I guess...not sure what Current's policy is on this though.
  • What can I say? A very well put together documentary from a thought provoking and incredibly socially aware young film maker.
Having socialised/worked with young asians most of my young adult life this documentary had me engrossed from beginning to end. The editing is of an excellent standard, (of which the style of camera cuts can be seen as very annoying and manipulative in other short films) and works extremely well here. This film is complimented by excellent camera work by Heidi Lindvall.
I could definitely see this being broadcast on television by Channel 4. Excellent work Londoner!

  • Im a mixed race, Chinese/British. In Hong Kong im English and in England im Chinese...so, am I both or neither. I feel complete affiliiation with both cultures, which personally im glad of. I have the best (and worst unfortunately) of both worlds. Nice film.
