Memorial Day was a tragically sad reminder of the enormous human cost of Bush's invasion of Iraq.
But amidst our sadness, we have reason for hope. On May 15, something remarkable happened: your calls and emails persuaded 149 Representatives to vote against Bush's demand for $163 billion more to occupy Iraq for another year, and we won the vote in the House 149-141!
What's most amazing is that only 46 Representatives voted against Iraq occupation funds in January. So in just 4 months, we picked up 103 votes!
Clearly Congress is hearing from the overwhelming 68% majority of Americans who want our troops home within 6 months. All 435 Representatives are up for re-election in November, and they know they will lose their jobs if the anti-war majority gets organized.
While we lost the vote in the Senate by 70-26, the House will vote again next week. And if the House stands firm by voting no, Bush will have to bring our troops safely home.

It is about a time! in addition to that we must bring our Troops home! We do not want to leave them out there without any money or supplies right?
-
Please make those calls, tell everyone to call. Maybe we can actually stop the nightmare.

to be honest that is kind of not good for me, due to the fact that regardless of the vote passed in congress my living condition as a soldier over there will begin to degrade, not that it isn't bad enough, so when people cheer it makes me think, how would they like to spend 15 months playing dodge the bullet

Just so everyone is aware, this story is referencing a May 15th bill in the House of Representatives.
Rep. Ron Paul (TX), Nay
http://clerk.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.asp?year=2008&r...
A week later the Senate approved $165 billion in war funding. The House still has to weigh in on that legislation. http://current.com/items/88975214_u_s_senate_approves_1...
Here's how the Senatorial Presidential Candidates voted:
Clinton (D-NY), Nay
McCain (R-AZ), Not Voting
Obama (D-IL), Not Voting

You don't understand. There is already money for the military needs. It is covered and paid for. This money is for the future and provisions will be made for withdrawal before that runs out. We have to stop this now. Too many lives have already been lost. There is no way they can deprive you what is needed when the money has already been allocated. No one wants to deprive the troops anything. We want you home.

Awesome, now we can use that money to research why soldiers don't like to go into combat zones.

The House voted to stop funding. Great! I just called my senator and asked him to show the courage my representative did, and vote to stop funding also.
-
This administration is planning to make sure that they get their way. They always do.

Marilynn_Murray, you are right. None, absolutely none of the new $165 billion goes directly to meet the needs of the troops. It's not for their pay or any personal allowances. Enlisted service personnel make peanuts to begin with:
http://www.defenselink.mil/militarypay/pay/index.html
So, when whomever propagates the idea that a vote against supporting the Iraq and Afghanistan war(s), is a vote that denies the needs of a solider, it is just so much spin. -
I agree, if we act together, our combined effort sends a much stronger message to our representatives...let's bring the troops home and throw huge parties for them...to show them that we do appreciate everything they have tried to do...even though we've all been played...and the soldiers in the worst way...
Making the call is the first step in the long journey home for our soldiers... -
This is a great triumph for the anti-war movement. If the funding is stopped once more, it could be a precursor to sending American troops back home. Now if we could just use some of that funding to help the troops deal with PTSD...

lifestudentno83, Funding for any care, help for the troops might be able to be passed in this election year or after we have a new president. It's up to us to band together to get it. We have no excuse, we have information from the Internet and we know now. Before most of us were ignorant of just how needy they are. The Iraq war vets are starting to join the Viet Nam Vets under freeway over passes. We need to include the Viet Nam Vets in everything we do, some might still be saved, or at least they need helped in any way they can be. Know this those people begging on the streets drinking themselves into numbness were once bright-eyed idealistic young men that we sent off to fight useless wars and destroyed their lives. We owe them so much.

I beleive I'll be speaking to my senator tomorrow. This is great. Maybe the 'people' can finally get a say in how this administration is running things. Thanks for the info.

Wow, this is shameful. Are they too busy in their ego contest to place a vote? I guess after they all voted to FUND IT so much it really doesn't matter what they do at this point.-

Can someone brief me as to why McCain and Obama are not voting? And will Bush be able to veto this?? Maybe it's my natural cynic coming out but I feel as though the administration won't let this go.

keeshii768, I would like to think that McCain and Obama are avoiding this for something other than presidential campaigning tactics. We are also talking about two separate bills that are in the works so we should keep an eye on both.
I think that no matter who we are supporting we must hold our candidates accountable. Rhetoric is alluring but voting records speak volumes (especially when they match the politicians stated stances on the issues). -
Well, it's nothing new for Obama or McCain. They vote present many times it seems. Good way to make it look like you give a damn without actually having to. Maybe someday some will see how they let their rhetoric cloud their judgement. And how convenient they are doing this in an election year. They sure killed plenty of people in the lead up while they were funding it and looking the other way. I don't give Congress a bone for doing their damned job.

This is awesome, but it's not good enough!! Don't stop here!!

Too true Marliynn. We owe them more than we can give them, but we can at least try to match their bravery by fighting the enemies at home.

After 8 years and billions upon billions of dollars, is this really great news? It's about time our leaders got smart to the Bush Administration schemes.
-
Obama needs to start voting, he has missed tons of votes during the election season so far, and in one of the most important votes hes not voting? Wow, thankyou Obama.
If Clinton can go vote nay and is in debt for her campaign, I think Obama can go vote too, show that he means what he says.
I hope when hes president he will do what he says, that its not all just fluff.-
