Women and children are the most vulnerable in times of economic crises. Too feed their children the women of Zimbabwe have been forced to trade sex for food. They are crossing the border into neighboring Mozambique, where they will have access to highly valuable American dollars. According to the Mail & Guardian, "the Zimbabwean economy has collapsed in the last decade, with inflation now running at 165 000% and the unemployment rate at 80%. The women who spoke to AFP said they were drawn by the possibility of earning money to send home, but most of them struggled to earn the equivalent of $20 (€13) a day. At times they get paid as little as 50 US cents for sex acts."

  • I dont believe that ANY women, should have to sell their body for anything. I respect their courage to do whatever it takes to feed their children, but having to resort to prostitution is horrible.

  • This is something that most women here in the U.S., including myself, could never fathom. You can never say what you would or would not do if yourself and your family was starving. I'll save a spot in my heart for these women who deserve a better life, and I will certainly make it a point to appreciate both the monetary and physical security I was blessed with.

  • This is horrible! I don't think that many in the States (or most places for that matter) comprehend how catastrophic hyperinflation really is and the devastating effects it can have on a nation. The 165,000 percent figure in this story was reported by the Zimbabwean government in February. Last week independent finance houses reported their annual inflation had reached an alarming 1,063,572 percent and is on pace to reach 5 million percent in October!

By the way, today's U.S. dollar is worth about 5 cents compared to 1913 or 19 cents compared to 1971 when Nixon took us entirely off of a gold standard. (Keep in mind that these figures are using fudged government numbers too) :-)

  • How is this any different than prostitution in general? The only reason a woman has sex with a man for some kind of currency is for her survival and that of any children. Hookers on the street aren't there for their health or a good time; it's to put a roof over their head, food on the table, and clothes on their backs. It might be the world's oldest profession but it's also one of the most immoral.

  • Actually they say the rate of condom usage is very high and so the rate of STD's is relatively low considering the circumstances.
