Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan writes in a surprisingly scathing memoir to be published next week that President Bush “veered terribly off course,” was not “open and forthright on Iraq,” and took a “permanent campaign approach” to governing at the expense of candor and competence.
Among the most explosive revelations in the 341-page book, titled “What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception” (Public Affairs, $27.95):
• McClellan charges that Bush relied on “propaganda” to sell the war.
• He says the White House press corps was too easy on the administration during the run-up to the war.
• He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be “badly misguided.”
Why is it that these guys tell the truth only after they have nothing to lose but we have lost a lot already?

Better late than never. Maybe if enough of these guys spill their guts, then we will see justice for the overwhelming amount of crime committed by this corrupt administration...The individuals responsible for the endless trail of corruption and crime should be prosecuted and made an example of, just like all other crimminals...it's never too late for that...

Being a Bush Press Secretary is just about the most awful job I can think of. You have to lie through your teeth and bullshit around questions, and no one takes you seriously anyway, and everyone assumes that asking questions of a sick cow would be more informative. And all the while you just look like a jackass.
And then they have the gall to try to clear their name by coming out against the President AFTER they resign. Fuck them.-

Funny thing I saw this coming a while ago. Im just wandering can the people shut up this media propaganda machine that's trying to take little of his attacks and make McClellan a "traitor and liar". Everyone knows why he never did it before these are D' Evils. He has probably heard and seen some incomprehensible things. I believe him, we all should.!! He's from Texas! He was one of there "do" boys. He loved George Bush but that doesn't mean he completely sold his soul against the American People. That's ultimately, who he was serving via the President. The Number One Civil Servant of the Land. Not Dictator
Scary thing if you go to my web page I did a submission on this exact thing titled " Isn't that Treason "with a link as you can see the link is missing but my comment from 6 months ago is gone but I have posted many before which still remain -
That has to be the worst job in history? Lying for a liar.
-
There is no way the Bush admin. can stop the flood of people who have stories to tell about what has gone on.
It's great, and it's what ALWAYS happens. These things are fated to fail - you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men. -
there will be more guys like him, the truth will come out they were too sloppy
-
Now you tell us!
-
because they are cowards and NOT patriots. if you know that someone/something is going to hurt your country, and DO NOTHING ABOUT IT, that's treason, calls for a hanging.
all the x-bushies, were too scared and under the power of the administration, so it was difficult to be a whistle blower, but not impossible.
same reason why some of the media is zombified like puppets by the president at the podium, bull shitting his way to hell.
NOTHING is bigger and more important then our transparency, citizens, and constitution. and that includes ANY administration or serving president. -
All of the media is not zombified by the President at the podium.
-
The white house shouldn't be in charge of who gets a seat in the white house press corpse or not beyond security checks perhaps. One of the problems is that people asking too prying of a question get ejected from the press core and boom... everyone else decides to shut up and play nice. On top of that we need transparency and public oversight beyond simple press core briefings and prepared propaganda.
-
"the white house press corpse", I do think that's the problem.

right US Press Corpse..JohnA funny
This is huge..Scott McClellan!
The whole illusion is crumbling crumbling!
..finally so many years after most of us knew it .. ..
The movie will be awesome someday..I can't wait to see my Fox/CNN Loving friends watching how stupid they were all along to believe this massive pile of steaming bs
I keep wondering what happens to those types in this situation..when the illusion of propaganda dissolves do they ever get it?
What happened in Germany? Are they still largely under the illusion that they weren't scammed.-

Thank God Scott McClellan finally enlightened us with the truth!!! We were all wondering if there was a propaganda behind the war!!!
Scott, I am going to tell you what Keith Olbermann told your ex-boss, SHUT THE HELL UP.
How dumb do these people think American people are? Makes me want to puke. -
This is where I say he's only in it for the money. Truth has nothing to do with it. Talk bad about Bush and you'll get money for doing it. I don't think one can trust someone who writes a book like this when the gain is so much. No one should ever trust someone that has nothing to lose but everything to gain. Not to say what he has said in the book isn't truthful, just he's not worthy of being trusted. Not. At. All.
-
I second J Jammer. He didn't say anything before because he's out for the money. I'm not saying he's lying. He's probably telling the truth. If he cared about this country, he should have come out sooner to tell us these accusations.

I for one fully believe the statements made in this book.Bush is a liar,a war profiteer, and is embarassingly stupid to bat.The only thing in the book I disagree with is the statement that bush is intelligent enough to be president.Clearly this is not the case. His legacy(yes, unfortunately he will have one)will be one of ineptitude, incompetence, and greed (although cheney beats him out on that last one).

Apparently this book will only speak to those that want to hear the failures of Bush, and those that want to only hear that are also not to be trusted; since they have hate on their minds and hate rots the brain.
-
Well, he certainly didn't zombiefy anyone other than those who were already blind sheep...But I'm still curious as to what he has to say now. The easiest thing for the administration to do now, is to say that he's still full of it...I believe he quit because he just couldn't do it anymore, too much stress, too much B.S. You could see him losing it towards the end...knowing that nobody was buying the load...
I agree, we do need more transparency though, in any administration...-

Just another 'are you kidding me?' headline from a former Bushie. If more of these kids would crawl from their holes and expose the truth and have done it earlier on, perhaps we could have rid the White House of their stench. Instead, Scott will make money off the ordeal and simply add to the malaise that is the nightmare of the Bushies and their further romp into failed politics.

A Russian saying, "When money speaks, truth is silent."
Perfect context for such a situation. -
A Russian saying, "When money speaks, truth is silent."
I love that j jammer..such truth in that!
These despicable Corporate Sleaze balls..drug co's and the Bushie gov't are spreading their pestilence through money. If you are in on their scams they reward you richly..if not you are spied on or otherwise punished any way they can.-

Ain't that the truth, J? I still think it's best he came out and said this, but the whole 'memoir/book' scandal is getting pretty old. Sit in a witness booth under oath and start talking, and yes, better late than never! These bastards are gonna fry one way or another.
-
Im delighted hes finally doing this, sure its a little late, but at least hes saying it. Of course im not surprised, hes a former Bushie, and most Bushies are greedy people....sooo ya youve all alrdy explained it.

How many more of Bush's insiders have to write books for congress to act? How many more people have to be hurt by his mismanagement? The Supreme Court thinks it's time to 'GET OVER IT'! I think it's time to get OUR COUNTRY BACK! 9 Supremes and some NEOCONS should not be able to control America. OUR CONSTITUTION WAS SET UP WITH THREE EQUAL BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT FOR A REASON!
WE AS AMERICANS NEED TO SCREAM, NOT 'MOVE ALONG' AS WE HAVE BEEN DOING. MORE AND MORE PEOPLE WRITE BOOKS! IF CONGRESS WOULD USE THE BOOKS THEY HAVE WRITTEN, THEY COULD CHANGE DIRECTION!
IF CONGRESS IS PART OF THE PROBLEM AND NOT THE SOLUTION, 'WE THE PEOPLE' NEED TO STAND UP AND GET THESE GUYS TO STAND DOWN BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
THEY ARE KILLING US SLOWLY. OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS IN SHAMBLES WITH LESS AND LESS PEOPLE HAVING THE QUALAITY HEALTH CARE WE NEED.
OUR ECONOMY IS IN SHAMBLES, WHILE THE RICH GET RICHER, THE MIDDLE CLASS AND POOR AMERICANS ARE SUFFERING! SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE! WE ARE HURTING DEEP IN OUR SOULS.
WE HAVE BEEN LED BY FEAR! IT'S TIME THEY FEAR 'WE THE PEOPLE' MORE THAN THEY FEAR THE WAR MONGERING, HEALTH CARE MONGERING, BANK MONGERING, OIL COMPANY MONGERING SHIESTERS THAT HAVE ALL BUT DESTROYED OUR COUNTRY! WE NEED CHANGE! NOT COINS, BUT REAL CHANGE! -
IF AMERICAN POLITICIANS REFUSE TO STAND UP, THEY ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM! THEY NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE AND REPLACED WITH INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE WILLING TO REPRESENT ** 'WE THE PEOPLE' **!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I agree that it's better late than never, just as long as what is being late is truth and not another lie.
-
Cynicism aside, I am rather uplifted - I actually saw this on CNN, as a "top story."
Whatever this dude's motivations were/ are, it is a step in the right direction.
It certainly doesn't sound like another lie...more like what we all knew to begin with is close to being made "official." -
I WON'T FEEL UPLIFTED, UNTIL I SEE OUR OTHER BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT DOING THEIR JOBS! NOT IN A MONTH, A WEEK, A DAY! I MEAN TODAY!
I WANT WORDS FROM CONGRESS AND THE SENATE! THEY ARE BEING PAID FOR A REASON! IT'S NOT 'JUST' FOR THEM, IT IS FOR US!
I WANT GOVERNMENT TO STOP AND DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE! DON'T BOTHER MAKING NEW LAWS, BECAUSE THEY ARE INCAPABLE OF ENFORCING LAWS ALREADY ON THE BOOKS! WRITTEN IN OUR CONSTITUTION!
WE ARE IN CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS! WHICH NEEDS ** IMMEDIATE ATTENTION ** DON'T PUT OFF TILL TOMORROW, WHAT THEY CAN DO TODAY! WE AREN'T GOING TO 'MOVE ALONG' ANY MORE!
never mind, I guess we are going to 'move along', nothing to see here! it's already off the top story, replaced by other news. ho hum, just another day in america. another book? what's one more book? nothing to see here, move along! i'm going back to where i'm really needed, taking care of sick family members. shame on all who stay silent!
if 'one lonely voice' screams and no one listens, is it really a sound? i fear not, just more pink noise, in a darkening world. turn off the lights on your way out. -
What took porky so long to come clean? He could have saved a lot of time and lives if he'd stepped up and said something from the jump. Where do they find these people that will say or do anything they tell them without a second thought, like the one they have now that bubble headed Dana Perrino?
-
The Dam that is the veil of lies that we have been handed down from the Bush/Cheney/Rove administration is cracked, spraying water and about to explode.
THIS IS TREASON!!!!
and should be dealt with accordingly!-

here's a link to our young veterans voices, americans who tried to speak out and were virtually ignored!
http://current.com/search/search.do?indexName=en_us&...
mainstream media spins the voices of warmongering liers and ignores voices of veterans who want to tell their *real* stories.
americas 'winter soldiers' should be heard! their voices illustrate the damage done to our young men and women who volunteered to serve us. 'we the people'. 'we the people' should not let their voices be silent.
they are casualties of george w.'s propaganda. -
stephenthomson got it right...
All this guy is doing is stating the obvious, and then making a profit off of it by selling a book.
Don't buy the book and support a guy with no balls who is only looking to profit off the presidents current unpopularity. Where was his book when it actually mattered or could have done something? -
This is precisely why we need to have a National Whistle Blower Protection and Journalism Shield Law to protect people when they are in the thick of the matter and have an incentive to come out of the the closet of LIES.
"Secrecy is the beginning of tyranny" Woodrow Wilson Smith -
McClellan would make an excellent witness for the prosecution in a war crimes case, wouldn't he?
-
Mc Clellan "The Prodigal Son"? Oh say it isn't so! Hell, I expected this from Colin Powell, but not Mc Clellan. Something in my heart challenges the sincerity and the release of this publication at this time. A true liberal would be delighted to have such a juicey morsel to chew on until the next scandalous revelation. However, this so happens to be crux of the issue if one surveys only the surface of things. I might have been classified as a conservative prior to the Iraq war, but immediately recanted my position upon the administration's decision to invade. At that time, as a resident of middle America, very few within my proximity took a stand against the war. It was a time of great disillusionment, but I couldn't deny what my heart, nor history was telling me.
So you can imagine my sentiments toward an individual such as Mc Clellan who adapted the staunch policies of the Bush administration to deceive the public by any means necessary. Mc Clellan could have done the right thing by resigning as others had during the exodus of the first administration as a matter of conscience, but he cowered under the pressure of conformity. In contrast, I didn't stand to profit from my beliefs, but rather lived in fear because of them. During those times Mc Clellan stood as nothing short of being part of an authoritarian machine, silencing and stonewalling the critics of the Bush administration.
Are you aware of the profit potential for ex-governmental officials traveling the circuit? Let's just say Scott stands to profit somewhere around $10 million for doing what he's good at, neither confirming nor denying anything. In turn, he also places the burden back upon the Bush administration to answer for questions long held in the minds of those who questioned governmental policies of late. Indeed, this might be construed as treasonous behavior on Scott's part, but it has the makings of an excellent screenplay for Hollywood writers. It's difficult to say whether Scott is truly disgruntled, greedy, or broke like the rest of us. Either way, I have to give him credit for sticking it to "The Man" on his way out. -
I think all of these revelations of how poorly the White House Press Corps (and the media surrounding the generation before the war) should make them rethink the presence of cameras in the briefing room. It's hard to ask hard questions in a forceful enough manner that they may get answered if it just makes "those journalists" look "elitist" or "rude." I'm sure McClellan would have appreciated some honest conversations.
