Here and Now is an ediitorial describing the experiences of growing up in an intolerant community. I discuss alienation, adolescent issues, and identity conflicts. I want to emphasize the importance of tolerance and humanism.

that was absolutely riveting...i too have the same complex...in fact, i am more ridiculed in my own filipino community than i was in my black neighborhood.
its really hard trying to find who you are. in all, i went to a path where i was more comfortable. i am who i am, a ghetto speaking, asian looking, filipino with my own style and my own way. and if anyone so pleases to disrupt my world, then they themselves are perpetrating the hate and stigma and racism that continually see as ignorance. -
beautifully put.

well i totally know how she feels i mean i'm also a teenager (15) vietnamese and i've seen what the adults say about you when you don't mean "standards" and it's hard.... Luckly for me i am fluent in my language and dont have to go through the tough ridicule. Identity,,, it's hard to find. I was so confused when i was younger and i sometimes wish i wasn't asian i tried to fit in and just when i feel like i do i hear people say things like she's a wanna be well they were right i wanna be aceapted into a comunity that i was so foreign to. I literally wish i was white; i just couldn't stand the racial slurs like "ching chong" (dont think that means anything in any language) . Now i learned to shurg things off and actually embrace who i am i love being asian and i live now to please myself not others. Life is alot happier now :D

I felt this way growing up too. I am Hispanic and growing up I wished I was white. Me and my brother used to talk about how ugly we were because of our Hispanic features. I remember once someone didn't guess I was Hispanic and thought I was white and I remember being very happy about that. Our family would always be disappointed that we couldn't speak Spanish. I could understand the language like you but I could say very little. But now I have learned to love myself and my culture and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I can totally relate to this, i love this piece. It brought tears to my eyes. The part that i most identified with, is when she described how horrible it felt to hear family members say bad things about her in front of her, and being unable to respond back. Its definitely not a good feeling, but thank you for bringing this to others attention. I hope you continue on creating more engaging stories like this. =]

That was a very beautiful pod. Asian Americans have different experiences but, I think the majority of the time we are expected to be the "model minority". The social pressures to act a certain way are very burdensome especially for someone in their teens and twenties.
