British turnabout key to cluster bomb ban

"Prime Minister Brown overrules his military and bucks the U.S. to support a treaty aimed against the munitions blamed for civilian deaths.

"In a major diplomatic defeat for the U.S., Britain broke ranks Wednesday and joined more than 100 nations in agreeing in principle to an international ban on cluster bombs, the small, insidious weapons that have killed thousands of civilians in the aftermath of battle.

"Though the Bush administration has lobbied hard against the treaty and many U.S. and British officials consider cluster bombs valuable weapons, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown overruled elements of his own military and threw his support behind the prohibition. Brown's decision cleared the way for an agreement that supporters said would lead to the removal of cluster munitions from arsenals around the world."

Kudos to the much (and mostly unfairly) maligned Prime Minister Gordon Brown who has the difficult job of filling the vacuum left by Tony Blair. Well, not exactly a vacuum since smells don't carry in a vacuum and Blair sure left an awful stink behind him when he resigned. His decision with regard to the ban on cluster bombs is a courageous and righteous one.

  • I'm really glad he has done this Vierotchka and it really shows Bush for what he is but i dont think his Uturn has anything to do with courage, more like trying to save his own skin and getting his ratings higher. Call me a skeptic....
