What do you do with a robot armed with a million-round-per-minute gun? "Crowd control," naturally. For several months, Metal Storm, the troubled electronic gun developer, has been working with iRobot -- the makers of military machines and cute, semi-autonomous vacuum cleaners -- to arm some of their new, 250-pound unmanned ground vehicles. Last week, at a defense trade show, the two firms showed off the results of their joint venture.
Metal Storm's weapons fire bullets electronically, instead of with firing pins and primer. The ammunition is stacked, rather than mechanically reloaded. And the only moving parts in the weapon are the ammunition itself. Which means the weapon can fire at a rate of thousands of rounds per minute -- maybe even up to a million, theoretically.
Metal Storm's 40mm weapons mount, the company tells us, can deliver both high-explosive and less-lethal rounds. Which makes it perfect for everything from urban assaults to "border patrol" to "infrastructure protection" to "crowd control."

Well I guess that it technically is a form of crowd control if you kill everyone in a rioting crowd...
Yes, I'm being sarcastic.-

It's crazy that they are stating that crowd control is one of its uses . Just shows the pervading mentality of the war machine

Dude dude dude dude dude. Guys, Guys... Crowds need to be controlled, that's a fact. And if we need some sort of robotic cyborg death machine to do it, thats just the way its gotta be.
Also - Robocop 2 was better than Robocop 1.-

This is why I get migraines...
Stop your killings... or you shall force me to once again train my Laser Cannons on your puny planet... -
That would be beautiful in Bush and Cheney's hands!
Maybe we can get some contracts.-

I think they've taken it a bit far this time. It looks like something out of a bad B-movie.
-
I bet it can't get down the stairs like that stupid one in Robocop.

Well I guess an armed robot may be their best way to go for crowd control. Americans may be unwilling to shoot other Americans, but a machine (robot) will do whatever they want it too.
It will be much easier for a compassionless administration to get a compassionless machine to do their dirty work.
Plus, a robot won't write a book about it. They are safe! -
Do these people not think of the negatives to these types of things?
Someone could take this and then give a child a remote control. Place them in front of a computer and say, "Play this game. How many can you kill." And BOOM...we have our very first human slaughter by a child thinking he's playing a shoot 'em up game.
We need technology that has us live better lives not live in a futuristic world where robots can shoot us via a video gamer. -
Beware soldiers! Yesterday the automobil-workes lost their jobs to robots, now it is you!

When George W. talked to the Airforce graduates yesterday, he talked about the increase in unmanned planes and the future where Airforce personnel will being able to operate those unmanned planes from American soil. I guess if he has used up our soldiers, he can use machines from a distance.
How will the rest of the world look at America fighting wars with machines? The terrorists won't hate us for our freedom! They will hate us for our unmanned killing machines!
Soldiers are accountable for their judgment! Machines are accountable to no one! They can't go on trial for war crimes! No soldiers, no crimes? I don't think it works that way. It shouldn't work that way. Someone needs to be accountable! -
If it acts anything like those iRobot Vacuums it will shoot the dog and get stuck in the corner.

They're armed with rubber bullets right?
-
I'm decisively against robots in direct combat situations, soldiers need compassion, give them to the police. hah.

You don't need ROF that high for 40mm unless you're giving heavy fire support to an entrenched squad. You only need a couple of tear gas shells for crowd control.

This is really disgusting, but hey at least amongst the wide world of the internet there are many guides to make EMP devices that would stop that little guy right in his tracks, of course the disgusting government we have in the US would probably call that attacking an officer :(

Yes, there's going to need to be some modifications made to the laws to include unmanned units.

They'll have these at the local football riots. Can just imagine Millwall vs. Chelsea and twenty pellet toting r2d2 keeping them in check.

Could Robocop defeat this?

this machine combined with the implanted-chip monkeys who control robots, and we get something far more entertaining than any of george lucas films.-

Metal storm is awesome! My friends and I have been talking about it for years. What we are seeing is the evolution of firearms and projectiles. Metal storm is not just a company that makes robots with guns. The product display is actually called firestorm. It’s a sixteen shot four barrel 40mm gun that can electronically fire a wide range of munitions.
Firestorm is safer, less expensive and more durable then anything else the military is using. The benefits of using this system(the one displayed above) should be obvious. When metal storm is coupled with Irobot you now have the means to disperse a crowd without risking the wellbeing of your soldiers. This is very useful now because military battles are moving from the field to the city.
Terrorists and guerrilla fighters use innocent civilians for cover. What I mean by that is a terrorist/guerilla will use a marketplace, rally, protest, subway station, or any crowded environment to unleash an attack upon an army. Guarding your assets with Firestorm will reduce collateral damage. Robots don’t panic under gunfire because bullets do not transmit their destructive power through a gun camera to the operator.
Therefore a solider using firestorm is not forced to defend his/her life by firing into a crowded area. Using less than lethal munitions allows him/her to disable or mark an attacker again without killing innocent civilians. If you want to be such a god damn peacenik that’s fine but please realize your aggression is unproductive.
You’re supposed to be defending logic and reason but your just like that 19 year old solider who’s scared shitless as he fires into a crowd.
You guys should be freaking out about elections and who we put in power to wield such tools instead of arguing their usefulness. -
-
jesus that video really puts it all in perspective, a gun that you don't even have to point to kill, guess people will realy have to think twice about protesting anything anymore.

Ha, J_Jammer did you read Ender's Game recently? Where did you get the idea that children will be controlling those? If they could pull that one off without there being a coup de tat then props to them.
