Melissa Barton says Morningside Elementary teacher Wendy Portillo had her son's classmates say what they didn't like about 5-year-old Alex. She says the teacher then had the students vote, and voted Alex, who is being evaluated for Asperger's syndrome -- an autism spectrum disorder -- out of the class by a 14-2 margin...

  • Quite a shocking story, having two brothers with this makes this all the worse. I am hoping and assuming that this has been brought up with the school and some for of local athority, also that the teacher should have detention herself. Nice job molding the minds of others to accept everyone thier Miss !

  • Harry Says lets not go there after Lisa makes the Reference that:
The teacher does not think she did any thing wrong; well Al Kiada does not thing they are doing anything wrong.

Love this reference If we can figure out how to "fix" this on home soil maybe they actually can "fix" Al Kiada. Now chances are that they will just fire the teacher or put her on administrative leave. You can't do that with Al Kiada.

What every one is doing is wrong but how do we change the world?
Never take a book by its cover as there are a few too many that are brilliant reads.

  • He is not a special needs child he is a Child with special needs.
I hate when people do this to any one with a disabilty or condition or even disease.

You don't say she is a breast cancer women.
You say she has breast cancer.

You don't say he is a Dyslexic Child
    You say he has Dyslexia

So who is more important the condition or the person?
Clearly CBS thinks the condition is more important than the Child.

  • what is being done with that "teacher"
a teacher is some who enriches the minds of students
    not pollute their minds
life is not a reality show,,,,
special needs children are usually the most willing to learn and also the most influenced by their surroundings
not to mention such a blessing to their families and usually to their teachers

  • where does the American With Disabilties Act fit in here? The school district could have some major liability issues...ALL CHILDREN ARE GUARENTEED AN EDUCATION!!!! if the child is being evaluated- then they are attempting treatment. It is the teachers job to teach the children that not everyone is the same. If these children are not learning tolerance at home it should be shown in school. Early Child Hood Educators are taught that- aren't elementary educators taught that....this is disgusitng- I would be calling a lawyer, and pressing charges against the teacher, and the school district....I feel as if the ACLU should be notified, as well as the Department of Education....
