Two monkeys with tiny sensors in their brains have learned to control a mechanical arm with just their thoughts, using it to reach for and grab food and even to adjust for the size and stickiness of morsels when necessary, scientists reported on Wednesday...

  • That's pretty incredible. Pretty soon, people who have lost their limbs can use mind-controlled mechanical ones while they wait for new limbs to regenerate.

  • I would love to be able to control all of my electronic gadgets with brainpower!

  • Me too. Like my TV. Or my keyboard. I'm ready for the day that you can think straight into your computer.

  • Go Go Gadget Cell Phone!
  • very incredible but I need to voice one of my many pet peeves. Chimps are not monkies. They are part of the Great Ape family. wiki this for more info..common mistake but big difference.

  • this is awesome.

  • I love how any story can be made extra-interesting by including a monkey.

Bigger picture though, this is petrifying. Give it about ten years and chimps will be controlling the guns in this link with their minds and scything down crowds of people whilst screaming "Ooh ooh aah aah! Stop calling us monkeys!"

They'll be talking by then too. The chimps, not the monkeys.

Imagine their confusion when the robotic arm is taken away and replaced by a tire on a rope...

Pretty amazing... Although I have to say: I don't think we should be sticking electronics into chimps heads regardless of how amazing the results are.

  • I'm not making fun of you at all - I'm joking with you, not at your expense. Monkeys put me in a playful mood. It's incredible how they really do make any story seem jovial.

  • I for one am freaked out. We're two experiments away from a 'planet of the apes' situation.

  • A similar experiment was done by Miguel Nicolelis a few years ago... show in the excellent Horizon documentary "Human 2.0".

  • i thought this headline was outlining how the Bush Administration controls the Department of Justice, oops! ;-)
  • It's great that this technology gives a second chance to paralyzed humans, but I think that they should vigilantly monitor the rest of the Chimp's life to record any negative effects (any besides having metal rammed in his skull, of course).

  • sorry CarolynGillis! I just needed a pic for the story and googled "monkey", and that's the first one that popped up! haha, thanks for the clarification though!
  • Wow this is a prime example of where humans mess up. Abuse the chimps to be smart so that we will one day live in a planet of the apes.

  • I was going to make a cute joke about the Bush Administration in relation to monkeys/chimps, however the comparison is insulting to primates everywhere.

It makes sense after testing it on chimps it should be ready for human applications. Just imagine a person missing an arm regaining the functionality of a robotic arm that responds to their thoughts...
  • code name? this is the coolest wierdest freakiest rectifying realest s%$# ever.
