Sunscreen health risks?

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a new study showing that nearly all Americans are contaminated with oxybenzone, a widely-used sunscreen ingredient. This chemical so far has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage, as well as low birth weight in baby girls whose mothers are exposed during pregnancy. Oxybenzone is also a penetration enhancer, a chemical that helps other chemicals penetrate the skin.

  • The irony is so delicious.

Luckily for me i don't use sun-screen. And don't see the sun. And have rickets.

    :)

  • Well, according to Baz Luhrmann, everybody's free to wear sunscreen.

Wonder which is worse? Skin cancer....or the side effects of oxybenzone?

  • Is it me, or is everything causing cancer these days?
    Neghie
  • i don't think that it matters which is worse. any cancer is too much. it's best to avoid anything that can cause cancer. it may not be what people want to hear because it requires self restraint, but it's time that we take responsibility for ourselves. governments and industries will not take care of us. they only have each other's interests in mind.

  • All you have to do is read the ingredients of the sunscreens and it is written clearly. If you can't pronounce it and it has multiple syllables then it will probably cause Cancer.

  • EVERYTHING causes cancer. The only way to avoid getting cancer is to keep your body in a natural daily cycle and avoid the influx of unnatural chemicals into your body. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!

  • Good info to know. There are sunscreens available that are as effective but are all natural and chemical free. Burt's Bees makes one that I have used.

It isn't just sunscreen that have chemicals that may be harmful. Start reading the ingredients on your shampoo bottle and google them... Best to be personally aware and not leave it up to the FDA.

  • I guess pasty white descendants of northern Europeans like me shouldn't be sunbathing to begin with, eh?

  • Considering the cancer causing ingredients in our makeup/shampoo/cleaning products etc...it's apparent that the FDA is worthless.

  • I'm with you Neghie. Every other day there's a new article claiming that some widely used household/work product will kill us all

  • It's been said before but we are finding out that many things lead to cancer. Why? Because we don't live our lives in moderation. It's always been said that too much of this causes cancer, too little of this causes cancer. It's about trying to stay in the middle of the road the best way possible.
If you're not putting on sunscreen everyday of every moment, you're probably in the clear. Besides, what's wrong with a little Vitamin D every once and awhile?

This is why I never use sunscreen. As long as your not a total idiot, the sun isn't that dangerous.

  • My theory is the 'skin cancer' scare was intended to again make us buy products that are not only not effective and expensive, but toxic in the end. I hate sunscreen.

  • You know what? Compared to some of the truly horrible sunburns I've gotten (and, no, I wasn't tanning. I was going outside, as people are known to do.) I think I'll take my chances. It beats the alternative.

  • Good thing I don't go outside and even when I do use sunscreen I'm probably adapted already.

i researched this a while ago and found only inconclusive data that said oxybenzone MAY promote free radical growth (and this may aid in formation of cancers, i believe). articles also stressed that the higher rates of skin cancer since sunscreen has been widely used is quite likely due to the fact that people are simply over-exposing themselves to sun, erroneously believing they are protected bc of the sunscreen.

the only truly natural alternative with no dangers that i was able to find was titanium or zinc sunblock that protects using the "barrier method" (sexy). anyone have more information / research to confirm or deny this? links please!

  • Now THIS is DEFINATELY something I wish I knew when I was a kid - then I could've convinced my mom to not plaster sunscreen on me 24/7!
    Ola_McGee
  • I got concerned about this a few years ago and started researching. I found a site called Skin Deep that analyses all skin care products by their ingredients, and lists them by the safety of the stuff they're made of. Here's a quick link to their list of safest sunscreens: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/splash.php?URI=%2Fbrow...

  • Vitamin D created by sunlight on skin is very beneficial for all kinds of health issues, cancer being one of them and melanoma in particular. Do not fear the sun, it has nothing to gain from you enjoying it. But beware the companies that make money from your fear and sickness ;o)
    HellaDelicious
  • this is why I work the night shift.
  • So what's worse, the sun or the poisons?

  • It is odd that this sort of chemical would appear under government regulation.
