Teachers at the school had set the children the task of explaining how they felt about the persecution of the gypsies. “The gypsies steal children to transplant their organs,” wrote one child.

  • This just goes to show how lies, prejudices, racism, and ostracism are perpetuated from generation to generation. Gypsies don't steal children, but Gypsy children have often been stolen from their parents so as to "civilize" them and to try to put an end to the Gypsies' culture.

Here is a link to a full and comprehensive history of the Gypsies:

  • I guess these drawings tell us what many adults think but don't dare to say.

A child wrote: “We are not racist, but if they want to stay they have to stop stealing.”

  • Yet it is their parents who tell their children all that the children "know" about Gypsies. Yes, some Gypsies are thieves - there are criminals in every society and culture - but that is the case with only a tiny minority of Gypsies.

  • True, Vierotchka. I guess children would know more about Gypsies if there were Gypsy boys and girls at school with them. Unfortunately, it is not the case. To my knowledge, Gypsy children do not attend Italian schools.

  • All peoples of society have some bad among them, It is sad that the few who do such criminal activities should be the basis for many Italian's opinion of their entire gypsy people.

  • I'm a Rominichal = English Gypsy. When I was growing up I was lucky enough to go to school, but was never allowed to tell anyone who I was or how/where I lived, for fear of being attacked. People would come and trash your trailer or try and set it on fire. My family worked hard yet were very poor, but we never stole anything from anyone.
