"Sales of Spam - that much maligned meat - are rising as consumers are turning more to lunch meats and other lower-cost foods to extend their already stretched food budgets."
Also for fun, the original Monty Python SPAM skit for those unacquainted:

See they've had it covered for time.
"They're coming for lunch - we're in a jam!"
"Keep cool, just open a can of SPAM"
Priceless. -
mmm. spam
I honestly like it. BUt that's because I'm uncultured -
oh god, wouldn't it be better to just go vegetarian. portabella mushrooms or spam, you decide.

I like Spam with white rice. I love the taste and no matter what people tell me is in it, I'll still eat it. People eat grosser things in other countries; for example animal penis in China.
No thanks, I'll just have SPAM! -
-
Spam is good! I dont know how good it is for you...but its damn tasty!
-
Yeah, that's the pod I was making reference to.
*cringes* -
any food outside of it's original form and pumped full of chemicals isn't good for you. sorry, i wish it was cuz that would be super fun for everyone but....
just because other people do weirder or grosser or stupider things doesn't make you right. if someone drank from a toilet bowl would you make out with a dog because it was less gross?
ok, i grossed myself out. i'm done, ick-

but i love it; both sorts! In fact, with my spare time i sit on a huge pile of domestic junk mail, ploughing through my all my spam whilst feasting on my own body-weight in spam. Easy on the price!

Eating Spam to cut food costs is a great way to increase your health care costs later in life. Compare Spam with dog food in a can to can comparison.

I don't know what's in SPAM, but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. People need to study nutrition more, we don't need as much protein as we think we do (as in meat three times a day). People can live healthily on a lot less than they think. Grow your own food!

Health and Environment nuts have one thing in common. They're nuts.
No one will eat Spam that much.
I've never heard of someone dying from eating Spam, though. -
yeah, but you have heard of people dying from heart disease and diabetes, yes? and cancer? it's not specifically about spam, it's about a lifestyle of junk food.
if you want to eat it, then by all means do so. I don't want to control behavior it's a pointless exercise. I'm just saying, if you don't want to to be sick when you're old (or maybe when you're young, now that 20-somethings are now experiencing heart attacks at an increasing rate) maybe you should eat more veggies and less processed and preserved meats. i'm not some crazy nut-job health foodie. I'm just living in a way that several doctors have told me will prolong my life by helping me not die of horrible fat-related diseases. i still eat meat, i just eat less. I never ate vegetables before, I hated them. I eat them all the time now because I opened my mind.-

meh. I'd much rather eat what tastes the nicest and die slightly younger, than eat disgusting 'healthy' foods and live forever
-
Is SPAM not FOOD?
-
Well charlie you could eat it for a meal but I don't think you'd want to... Or at least I wouldn't want to.
-

How about spam musubi?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_musubi
By the way, spam tastes better than dog food; it actually has a taste, unlike dog food which is cardboard flavour at best. -
So instead of buying bags of brown rice (very nutritious and inexpensive) they're buying Spam? Maybe it's supposed to be a slow form of suicide?
-
I don't care if the Food Riots come to my front door, I'm NOT eating spam.

I don't know about other peoples' home states, but lunch meat is NOT cheaper here in Florida. And it spoils before you can eat it all unless you have it at every meal. Maybe that is why people are turning to Spam. Does Spam EVER spoil?
-
Ingredients:
Chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added.
Salt (for binding, flavour, and firmness)
Water (to help in mixing)
Sugar (for flavour)
Sodium Nitrite (for colour and as a preservative)
that's all folks! -
Hilarious! The same thing is probably happening with foods like macaroni and cheese and raw fruits and vegetables.

Americans don't know what to turn to when food prices rise. So they turn to shitty, cheap processed "food", when they could just as inexpensively dine on beans, brown rice, veggies and countless other delicious foods. Yet another reason to go vegan.

I happen to like Lobster thermidor aux crevettes with a Mornay sauce garnished with truffle paté, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam, but thats just me.

Well, if the price of Spam gets too far out of line a Hawaiian invasion of D.C. seems imminent!
-
wait, isn't spam like 40% petroleum? it should be like $50 a can by now...
-
Uhh, bread is pretty cheap too.
I'd rather go hungry than eat the intestine filled spam.-

Spam as far as taste goes is on par with bacon IMO. I'm positive all the people here knocking it have never had it. Fry it up!
Also: To the Proselytizing vegans- We get it. You eat healthier than us and save baby animals from...whatever. It's annoying. -
good old spam.

spam isnt that bad, go to hawaii and you'll find spam all over the place. also regarding the whole 'food being in its original form' comment, there are many other food products out there that are reusing the ingredient in a different way ex: pringles potato crisps.

spam musubi! yay!

In the UK we're seeing a huge increase in people growing their own veg as food prices are rising - looks like the same is happening in the US.
Not a spam fan myself. If I couldn't afford fresh meat, I think I'd rather live on mung beans. Or.... add pulses to minced beef etc! Stretch it out with extra veg, put the tin of spam down!! ;o)
