Vatican: Excommunicate all female priests

The Vatican has decided to excommunicate all female priests and the male Bishops who ordained them. Analysts say it is meant to be a warning to all Catholics who want female priests.

-------------

"The decree was written by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and published in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, giving it immediate effect."

"A Vatican spokesman said the decree made the church's existing ban on female priests more explicit by clarifying that excommunication would follow all such ordinations.'

"Rev. Tom Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, said he thought the decree was meant to send a warning to the growing number of Catholics who favor admitting women to the priesthood."

"I think the reason they're doing this is that they've realized there is more and more support among Catholics for ordaining women, and they want to make clear that this is a no-no," Reese said

Jesus didn't have female apostles. Not a single female wrote a book of the bible.

This in no way means what they are doing now is right. They allowed it for so long and now they are saying no? It's wrong to allow it and then pull it back and go, "No, no we can't have this."

Well then you should have said no to begin with instead of giving the women the taste of something and saying, "Oh foolish us we made a big booboo."

Yeah you did and there will be a huge backlash. Stupid blunder.

  • "Jesus didn't have female apostles. Not a single female wrote a book of the bible."

Don't forget that the Bible was written by men in a male-dominated society.
There were also numerous books that the church up and decided to leave out of the final draft, one of which was the Gospel of Mary, whom quite a few scholars think was one of the apostles, rather than a prostitute.

Anyway, shame on you Vatican! Tsk tsk.

  • wowwww, now this reminds me of the time when they got rid of all the black popes within something called the Niceaen Creed

  • With the recent molestation scandals damaging the Church's image, you would think their solution would be to take a serious look at themselves and make some much-needed changes... but instead of realizing the status-quo isn't working and making the church more current, they are reverting to outdated traditions that only serve to further alienate the general population.

  • "Jesus didn't have female apostles. Not a single female wrote a book of the bible"

Thats because all evidence of a female apostle and books of the bible written by women were removed from the bible at the council of nicea

Also women were priests in the early years of Jesus' church after his death, in fact archaeological evidence remains of tombs of female priests being desecrated

  • huh ? women can be made saints , but can't be priests ? twisted .

  • Silly question here. Why does it matter so much weather women are priests or not? Also like JJmammer said it seems weird that the catholic church would allow female priests for so long before deciding to excommunicate them.

  • Way to take a step back Catholic Church... the next thing you know someone will be holding a sigh outside the Vatican that says "cult."

  • Mary Magdalene did indeed write a book in the Gnostic Gospels which was not part of the prepicked version at the Council of Nicea... This really makes me believe the accounts that Mary was to inherit the leadership of the church after Jesus and not Peter are true. The Catholic church's abject hatred for women makes them not only despicable but total hypocrites. They dare to call themselves Christians? How women can be members of such a church boggles my mind.

  • I love mass, It is beautiful. I quit attending years ago. This pope is a hateful old Nazi and I will not be associated with the church as long as they keep finding people like him to lead. In fact I seem to be doing fairly well in my relationship with God without organized religion.
  • If you’re not a catholic why should you care what the Pope commands his own people to do? I thought we were supposed to be respectful of the religion of other people. Right?
    Ricky84
  • I am a Catholic, and my church is wrong in what they are doing. They are being hateful and that deserves no respect from anyone.
  • This pope has done some pretty good things too, like trying to support world peace and meeting with high level Muslims. So don't write him off just because of this. All in all, I think he's on the right side of life.

One thing I would like to see all the religions do is promise not to promote population growth as a way to keep or gain influence. The planet can't afford that anymore and all the religions still need the planet. If the pope led the way in that regard I would be very impressed and might even forgive the sexist side of their organization.

  • His "command" goes against the very religion he professes. And as someone who no longer thankfully is tied to organized religion, I don't have to respect any religion made up of mysogynist old men who claim to be tolerant of all but clearly are not. They are no better than politicians.

  • "My opinion is that there would never have been an infidel, if there had never been a priest. The artificial structures they have built on the purest of all moral systems, for the purpose of deriving from it pence and power, revolts those who think for themselves, and who read in that system only what is really there."

  • They love Mary, but hate women priest is that kind of odd. Don't forget the woman who are in the bible that influenced and change for example Ruth, Mary, Mary M., Esther, MIRIAM( which means prophetess). These are only a few. Without Mary, there would be no Jesus. Oh wait the Songs of Solomon had a good time in complimenting, not men, but women.
    Amen.

  • Mind you, Abbesses do exist, as do Mothers Superior - they are a kind of priesthood, a monastic priesthood. Nevertheless, as someone pointed out above, there were women priests and even women Bishops in Rome during the first several centuries of Christianity. The misogynistic angle is largely Pauline in origin, too - Paul had a profound fear and hatred of women, and was most likely a self-hating closeted homosexual.

  • Again, this is why I'm an Atheist. However i feel bad for the female priests, It will undoubtedly change their lives.

  • In comparison to the inequities suffered upon women in other major religions in the world, this is merely a slight, an insult. At least the Catholic church doesn't condone or perpetuate mutilation, rape, and murder of unfaithful women or subjugate them to a subordinate status in society.

Say what you will, the Catholics do far more good than harm.
    raycoleman
  • sure, in comparison. But please enlighten me Ray, what does the Catholic church do that's good? My opinion of religion and catholics specifically is pretty low, so any good news will help.

  • People are people... I get so angry when people attack Islam for its oppressive ways when it is just people misinterpreting their faith... Where is all of the anti-Catholic uproar? The truth is the media and government control most of the people's opinions no matter how free-thinking you think you are... Its a shame and a little depressing to think about...
    MoMoney
  • MoMoney, when anti-abortion and anti-female and pro-extraterrestrial statements are coming straight from the Vatican and Pope, you dont have to worry about the media distorting the truth.
    stephenthomson
  • Stephen, even as cynical as I am, I recognize the good in charity, in providing soup kitchen and cold night shelters for the poor, in giving to children's hospitals, comforting the downtrodden and needy, and being a shoulder of faith for those who need it. I admit, there are many things that have occurred that have garnered great adverse attention, but the day to day sacrifices by parishoners the world over for the benefit of others outweighs the bad
    raycoleman
  • When you are hungry cold and tired, you really don't care if the person feeding you is pro-choice or pro-life
    raycoleman
  • oh right, the charity stuff. it's all good. And I'm glad the church does that kind of thing. I'm glad there's an institution encouraging people to empathize with the lesser fortunate. It's too bad, though, that those same institutions also roll our their parchments of socio-politically charged codes of conduct, the defiance of which they promise will send you to a place of eternal suffering. Charitable, sure. Open-minded? mm...

  • I just don't see why women are not allowed to be priests. Aren't we all commissioned to spread the Good News?

  • In religion, the sense of community for most is very important...the Catholics do have a strong sense of community and, for the most part, a high moral character. There are many charities and community services associated with the church...the few bad priests have done great injustice to the rest...

But getting back to the topic at hand, during the years of the life of Jesus, there were male apostles and there was the women's corp, which was much like the apostles. The women even said mass just like the priests do now. Vierotchka is correct. The apostle Paul seems to have made it his life's ambition to disparage the role of women in the collective church.

However, the influence of Mary the mother of Jesus could not be diminished, because she was clairvoyant with Jesus and knew him well, more than anyone. By the same token, Magdalen was very influencial because she also understood Jesus more than most of the Apostles. Jesus believed that men and women should be equal, but, as some of you have stated, theirs was a society dominated by men and that was not to be easily undone...Not in one generation, not even in many. That's why Magdalen had to keep a low profile...many wanted her dead. So the men kept the control within their ranks...The women aggregated toward convents...

All in all, the Catholic Church does not hate women, but, rather has great respect for them. They just want to keep women in their 'so called' place, subservient to men. Remember, Jesus has tried to change that for two millineums now...that is one of the major issues facing the world today whether anyone is willing to admit it or not.

Lastly, I would consider whether the Pope is looking ahead...deciding that he does not ever want to see a female Pope...She could possibly turn the tables... besides the whole scheme of things is based on the Father being the dominant role, even as God...

Not that I condone everyhting that the Catholic Church does...

Give a woman an inch and she'll take a mile, pretty soon they'll want to be pope.

    Sorry........that was a bad joke.

  • What would Jesus do? Jesus would turn a blind eye to these blundering fools.... The Genesis account of Adam and Eves fall, Eve allegedly being the culprit is all Non-sense and deceit, The Genesis account is a Conspiracy against women.... The Cess Pool that is the Vatican has oppressed women subliminally through the power of suggestion, the suggestion that women are inferior based on the Events described in Genesis, Lies Lies Lies.... Obviously the catholic church sanctions Homosexuality and Child Molestation because it seems that they don't prefer women...
    Mobius2012
  • Jesus seemed to be very inclined to women , because he dismissed his apostles and entrusted a woman with esoteric information according to a compilation of books banned from the Bible by the Catholic church and so spitefully labeled the ''Apocrypha''...That womans name is Mary Magdalene and she was cunningly and obscurely referred to as the ''Beloved One'' in bible scripture to so veil Jesus' inclination toward a woman, the most sacred of all beings....
    Mobius2012
  • J Jammer- Jesus never had any Female apostles? I hope that's a quote J Jammer..... If not, then you obviously haven't read the bible, and you obviously haven't done any research....
