Video: 'Spin' ---T.V. Footage you were never supposed to see

Artist Brian Springer spent a year scouring the airwaves with a satellite dish grabbing back channel news feeds not intended for public consumption. The result of his research is SPIN, one of the most insightful films ever made about the mechanics of how television is used as a tool of social control to distort and limit the American public's perception of reality.

Take the time to watch it from beginning to end and you'll never look at TV reporting the same again. Tell your friends about it. This extraordinary film released in the early 1990s is almost completely unknown. Hopefully, the Internet will change that.

Thanks for the video. I finally have something important to share with peers and family.

i am anything but surprised. disgusted, disappointed, saddened, yes... but not surprised.

@beedee... I agree... maybe not a trailer, but an "excerpts." there's a lot of "dead air" in the collection which doesn't carry the message. but the highlights would be dynamite!

i added a link from my site at http://www.plusaf.com/newspapers-c2.htm

That was great...thanks for posting it... up.

  •

Wow, I'm gonna try to watch the whole thing right now, but someone should really get to work making a short trailer for this.

Thanks for the comments ... agreed beedee on the short trailer, it's quite a lot to ask people to watch the entire piece. But it is quite telling. I'd love to hear from behind the scenes of Bush or Cheney.

    *shudder*

It makes me physically ill to even utter their names.

my shit's not buffering... i'll come back to it.

i've been pimping the hell out of this piece. Just posted a diary on DailyKos that could use some help. I've taken the time to write out a few excerpts to whet folks' appetites with.

Amber_LaStrega, thank you for posting this! Although I must admit that part of me wishes that I didn't watch it. Holy s__t!

In my opinion, the part about Agran's 1992 presidential campaign just provides further confirmation of the blatant media blackouts of Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul. The ABC executives told Agran that "he had not earned the right to media exposure because he had not recieved enough media exposure!" WTF?! And then he gets excluded from the televised debate for not meeting the criterion: "Recognition by the national media as a candidate meriting media attention." Unbelievable!

Also, this proved to me that Pat Robertson is a bigger douche than I already thought he was (which is definitely saying something).

The Columbus story segment with Katie Couric and scumbags is f_____g ridiculous and insulting!

I am also curious to see how the Current community responds to some of the Al Gore stuff in the video (particularly at 32:57).

If we only had technology to keep getting footage like this and broadcast it 24/7. Turn the tables on them all and keep them honest.

    You're welcome, and well met.

Yes, it's outrageous what the Mainstream Media is doing. Unfortunately I work in the MSM (for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis), what wingnuts call 'The Red Star' alleging our content is skewed to the left. Pfffft. I'm constantly approaching the editors imploring them to cover stories not being brought to the light of day ... to no avail. It's damned infuriating.

This is wonderful insight for the gullible and misinformed, I include myself in that category unfortunately

WOW! Thank-you so much for posting this. The amount of work that went into this documentary must have been astronomical. I can't imagine what this man was thinking while watching all of this and wanting to share it with the world. I know what i'll be forwarding the sleeping sheep in my life this weekend. Thanks again.

Again, many thanks for the comments. I'm glad I've been able to post something that's sparked a reaction from so many who seem to be on the same political page as am I.

We must keep the snowball rolling. My local Senators and House Representatives are most assuredly familiar with my name ... I write them and/or call on a daily basis.

I urge people, if you're able, to support Ms. Golub in San Francisco, who is challenging Ms. Pelosi for her seat. Impeachment simply must be put firmly on the table.

By the by ... "sleeping sheep" ... so well put.

    Cheers! ~ Amber

I wrote a review for this on a blog I post on like months ago and this video was released even a while prior to that.

Just as people should know that Democrat or Republican it matters not, for they are still similar enough to pull off being in this video and viewed under the same light.

The Clinton thing about the ad was just wow and Larry King, what a funny little beggar.

You know what's sad? After 8 years of Faux news and other copycat bias movement, this doesn't even phase me.

It doesn't even upset me. Then again, I suppose this just confirms our suspicions rather than teaching us something new.

The only thing this made me realize was, if this was going on to make it subtle then, what it's like now that they're completely ridiculous?

Do you know how to tell when a politician is lying??

You can see their lips move.

I'm also not surprised by this at all. I have an old friend that I keep in touch with who works in a local network affiliate in a very big market. The weight of the stories he covers or the purpose of his profession as a whole are lost on him. He just knows how to talk right, write copy and edit. Just about every major issue I ever ask him about it totally lost on him. We can no longer leave our political discussions to professionals. The founders intended for all of us to be the ones talking about politics and religion, but somewhere along the way that became 'taboo'.

The point is, we shouldn't need these blow dried blowhards to tell us how we're gonna vote.

Not surprised but still pissed. That bit about Al Gore was interesting... Has anyone read The Assault On Reason? I want so much to believe people can play that Washington game and walk away a different person, having learned something, you know... Maybe I'm just dreaming.

That was great... I was only going to watch a couple of minutes of it, ended up watching it all.

When I was young, I volunteered at a fund raiser at a TV station. Was that ever an eye opener!! Ever since then I have always had such wide open eye when it came to interviews and the news in general. This a fantastic piece and I hope it reaches out to those who have been led like 'sleeping sheep'.

Well that took awhile to load. And I have to agree with other posters. Not shocking or surprising but it is unfortunate. Things haven't gotten a whole lot better but we can thank the internet for those of us who want real information. Unfortunately, not enough of us are willing to look for that information. There is a lot of criticism of the media that is well deserved, however, until viewers start asking questions and searching for answers on their own, we too are to blame. As it's been proven with this video, a lot of these things are not hidden from us. As proven with John Edwards and Kucinich, we could have chosen to keep these guys in the race had we built momentum around them ourselves. If we stand up and say that we've had enough of the media spoon-feeding us the news, we might actually get somewhere in bettering the declining field that is journalism.
