John Cusack's new movie 'War, Inc.' is surprising the critics and is putting the asses in the seats in the two cities it opened in. An impressive feat, seeing as it had a hell of a time getting into festivals and had a marketing budget of ZERO dollars.

According to Cusack on his Vlog, if the film has one more good weekend in the two theaters its playing in it will go national. And if that happens, it won’t just be the anti-war message of the movie that is groundbreaking; War Inc. could become a model for a new, grass-roots type of marketing, in which a film’s potential audience (with a little help from the director) may be better able to advertise it than the so-called experts are.

    I fully support going outside of the mainstream market for a film that is, obviously, outside of the mainstream.

    I don't know if I'd refer to a film starring Hilary Duff as "outside of the mainstream". This article really should have looked at how industry heavy weights are using short theatrical runs and "viral marketing" to give credibility to movies that really should have gone direct to DVD. This film got horrible reviews and never went national. I suspect the distributor knew this would happen and was simply trying to pass it off as an indie film before the rental dollars started flowing in. There are filmmakers for whom "viral marketing" is their only option, however Hilary Duff and John Cusack are not among that proud fraternity.
