Shot in Brick Lane in the heart of London's East End, this film reveals the extent of remittances. This is money sent by migrants and Diasporas to friends, families and villages in some of the world's poorest countries. They don't wear their heart on their sleeve or a wristband to show they care and they go on sending money when the shocking TV images have faded. Remittances outstrip aid and foreign direct investment for many developing countries. There are no strings attached and as the film suggests, remittances better represent the aspirations of our peers globally than much of contemporary charitable giving and celebrity pleading to buy a hoe or a goat.

    • Here is my question. Perhaps it is posed from ignorance, and my view of the world is too narrow to fully grasp the concept... Regardless, it is my point of view, and I'd like to hear some outside opinions.

Bricks do not come from the sky. Neither do shirts, or hats, or food products, or common amenities. Why is it; then, that western/eastern countries that are more industrially developed are so depended upon? Africa is the largest, most resource rich and diverse continent on the earth. Am I really to believe that these people (Who have already recieved much of the equipment neccessary) cannot support themselves?

Inginuity cannot be replaced with overseas aid. By accepting aid and refusing to further the industrialization of the continent and respected countries involved, africa is crippling itself.

      Just my two pennies.

    • when people use a developed country's economy to help their families in another less developed country, it helps everyone by stimulating the economy of the receiving family' country. poverty helps noone.
