the graffiti scene is a very, very friendly one. people dont understand that when you have a message, putting it in fancy galleries just doesnt cut it. i have major respect for guys like 2esae, doing what they love and not caring about what happens. the graffiti research lab is perhaps one of the best groups i have heard of. i knew about them before this and always was interested. not only are they innovative, but they are very supportive of any writer in need.

reclaiming public space is important---grafitti is one of the simplest and most visually appealing ways to do this. more projects like this should be taking place to allow the country to again belong to the PEOPLE, not the media and advertising companies.

i think that the public and the goverment have different opinions on graffiti. i equate it to tattoos. once seen as a criminal and outsider, today it should be seen for what it is, a bona fide art form.

Graffi is definitly an artform, I think it's great, but I not cool that they sentenced a guy to Rikers.

Mike's sentence can hardly be considered fair. To say that graffiti is a violation of the peace of society, and to ban it is edging to the border if insanity. If there are so little truths in this world, I believe that this is one of them, and we should embrace it, not ban it.
Innovation can not be let completely free, but i think the laws on it are a bit harsh.
But there are two different sides. One, if we are to legalize graffiti, there should be limitations, yet, it is possible the art form would lose some of its glamour because it isn't a violation? There is just so much to it that makes it a novelty, and some of that is because it's illegal.

i love graffiti, but everybody has different opinions about it. i think it's a great form of art, and to see mike baca get sentenced to 7 years for doing what he loves...that is not cool at all..

Random but...I think graffiti and skateboarding have similar problems and solutions. They are both outlawed without any legal outlet.

We all know its just gonna happen, so the government just needs to provide parks where people can skate or maybe dedicate walls around the city and sides of buildings that people can use as 'free-speech-walls' of some sort. Giving them a LEGAL outlet where people can write or draw whatever they want, ya know?

For the most part, i think people want to follow the law but if there is no way in which to abide an inevitable action, that creates a delema. The solution is to embrace and address these cultural and generational needs. Maybe even use them to highlight a local artist, or emphasize a community message, or revive a tired area, theres all kinds of possibilities.

How long are people going to be wrongfully punished. laws like these needed to be changed immediately. Its like the rockerfellas drug laws, where people with no criminal record were to be found with drugs can get 15 to life. That is unjust.

grafitti...good work, i can appreciate. but if it's something this guy is really serious about, he needs to learn from one of the best...banksy (one of my fav artists, all around)...on how NOT to get caught....

This guy's logic is a short cut to thinking. The reality is those walls are not his they are the walls of people who made money and bought property. They must then spend money to fix their walls as not to loose their value. "Why do I have to look at their walls, some architects walls, what did they do for me?"
Fine..lets go spray paint his house. His car. His trees. His lawn. Call it culture, call it street, justify it but what you are doing in spray painting is hurting someone else financially and assuming they have finances to loose is criminal. Its stealing. Buy a fucking canvas or spray paint your own homes. Leave everyone else's property alone.
