They were convicted for "unlawful free speech," or as G. W. would call it, "dispatriotism."

Unlawful free speech doesn't make any sense
-
Let me get this straight?
The Bush admin. can lockup free speech, but if Cuba locks up protesters (who are backed by the US government), Cuba is called more evil.
This and other acts of fascism brought to you by, Bush Diablo Productions of Crazy-town, USA. -
Bush would also say to mcVain - theyz waz-unt whif us, theyz waz against uz.
That's ridiculous.-

Blockade Washington DC! Oh hell, did I just commit unlawful free speech? Where in the hell is that statute codified? I would love to parse it for you...must be something to do with the USA (un)PATRIOT ACT.
This is not the country my father fought for. No way. He is very old but in a rare indictment of the Commander in Chief he recently said, "They've really fouled things up. Haven't they?" For him, that's the equivlent of a 10 minutte tyrade to us. -
keep in mind cuba is not the us
-
Can anyone say Newspeak?
-
that picture makes me so angry
-
You are correct 2thought, Cuba is not the U.S. Cuba has better health care.

The Bush Administration is a fascist regime. If the major thugs responsible for the denigration of our rights and our beloved Constitution are not brought to justice then something is very very wrong with the system and needs to be fixed. I majored in accounting and CPAs are not allowed to own stock in a company that they are auditing, so why can a sitting vice president or a congressman have vested interests in a company, and make decisions on behalf of We the People who they supposedly represent, yet profit outrageously from this gross conflict of interest? When those who make the laws also intepret and enforce the laws there is a conflict of interest. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and this Administration and the party that has ruled the Congress for the last 8 years (the Administration's lapdogs) are absolutely corrupt and have dragged the USA down to the 7th level of Hell, in which I hope they rot someday.

unlawful free speech....
I can't begin to even express the stunned horror and irony that I'm feeling after reading this. It makes me wonder why we have not already arrested this entire administration for violating every word of our seeming defunct constitution. -
"unlawful free speech" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the heck is that??? What is the constitutional basis for THIS charge? How did these people get convicted? This is incredible.
This destruction of our freedoms will continue after the election. There is no one on either ballot to remedy this or stand for individual freedom.
Travesty. -
"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."
-
Who took an Oath to Defend The Constitution & Bill of Rights? Our Government Employee's? Did they actually read it? I'm Confused. can someone explain this to me? Is this not clear enough?
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.-

*sigh* Yeah, this is America alright. We did pretty good for a long time, and now its all in the toilet. What do you all say, revolution time, or what?
This isn't the America people used to brag about anymore. This country has been hijacked, and while many of us screamed our heads off, we were largely ignored and the mass of the population handed it over like the prize in a box of friggin crackerjacks.
"Unlawful free speech" my ASS, talk about an UNLAWFUL PRESIDENT!! -
This is surely set to be a landmark case, are we now going to start seeing these happening left right and center?
How quickly do you think the judicial system could push through a charge of "unlawful free speech"? It's going to make arresting people at protest marches a spectator sport... -
Convenient benchmark for the law I would say. Makes one wonder how they will use this against protesters during the Republican and Democratic Party conventions in St. Paul, MN and Denver, CO.
Remember the "free speech zones"? It is all bullshit. They know. We know it. The only difference is they have the guns, tasers, tear gas and the key to the cell. -
Unlawful Free Speech! What the hell is that? Who's ass did that fly out of?
@phillyharper
"How quickly do you think the judicial system could push through a charge of "unlawful free speech"? It's going to make arresting people at protest marches a spectator sport..."
Excellent point. With the upcoming Ron Paul march on Washington, along with the Ron Paul'ers attempt to protest the heck out of the Republican National Convention, I see things gettin' ugly. This video above has scary new meaning.
As for the article, I am not clear on a couple things. Maybe some of you legal eagles can assist.
First, they were protesting outside the US Supreme Court when they got arrested, but where did their trial take place? The Press Kit ( http://www.witnesstorture.org/5-19-PressKit ) says nothing about what Superior court. Second, was this trial on video? If anyone can find any video of this trial of even quotes from the presiding judge, that would be great. I'd like to see what this McDouche Salad had to say.
I feel like this country just took a 232 year step back. -
This is another example of the U.S. constitution (which is supposed to be supreme law of the land) being forgotten. It would seem they want to control what we say.
go fuck yourself, Bush -
FUCK GEORGE BUSH. FASCIST SON OF A BITCH. I'm beginning to wonder when we will start dying for what we believe.
-
This is the real news that the Mainstream Media should be covering. With the conviction of these 34 people you can effectively wave goodbye to your right to free speech. This cannot be allowed to continue if we plan on keeping America the bastion of freedom and justice for all.

What? How did this happen? Did they disrupte the court or something. America has gone down hill a little but no free speech?
-
if it hasn't been happening already....be prepared for the gestapo roundup crews to start lurking around at night...hauling people away to camp...
Many have seen it coming for a long time but, as was said already, were largely ignored. Who do YOU believe now?!?! What side are YOU on?!?! Who will defend our Constitution that keeps all of us FREE?!?!
Where are the men of ACTION?!?! These are the questions we need to ask...or simply answer for ourselves by standing up to it.
When bushie addressed the nation about the patriot act...it was hitler's homeland security speech word for fucking word!!! This country needs a serious history lesson...
boogeymen in turbans? hell...im more worried about the boogeymen in 3piece suits or kevlar stormtroopers than underfunded men wearing rags...
So...keep checking Ebay to see which inalienable rights are being auctioned off next i guess?!?!?!
and for simply thinking that it isn't ok to torture other living creatures...fellow humans? Sad day for the Republic... :..( -
It's disturbing how little this surprised me.
-
Define "unlawful free speech"...whatever the judge feels like? whoops...
-
That's just sad.

I'm not about to sit here and point my finger at one man. I would not want to be President. There are more players at work than one man and these players are more powerful and pull more strings than one man who stand in front of the public and speaks.
If he weren't president this all would still be happening. I don't think people should just sit there and think it's solely because of him. No one man can cause so much trouble. Not even Hitler did it on his own. People gave way, governments gave way, citizens gave way.
One man never is the sole reason for anything. Even in a simple game like Survivor it's not one man is smart that he outwits it's that people are stupid and allow it.
If you are giving credit to Bush for this then you have to call him smart. If you give him credit for anything horrible that is going on or blame for 9/11 you have to call him smart.
If you don't think he is then stop blaming solely him. It doesn't make sense in calling him stupid and yet giving him full credit for horrible and creative things that are going on.
As for this...wow. It's baffling what government will do and what they get away with when people don't make a big deal about it. Let's all be distracted by the democrats long race while they abuse free speech elsewhere. They are playing a way better game than those that are protesting. Until someone starts doing something that gets attention instead of doing it for proving a point, Government will win.
Priest were part of this? That's just wrong of the Priest. I don't think they can point to anything in the bible that would back their doing this. I believe the bible specifically states "Vengeance is mine" and that was spoken by God who I would think Priest are working for. Unless they changed that along with kicking women out of higher positions. -
Wait... were clipping cuba's news? I mean isnt that source a little biased?
it does read like an AP News wire piece but still..
I found the following press release.

It's nice to see we got rid of that "Constitution" thingy.
