Tube party ends in drunken madness

Saturday night marked the end of the 'can in hand' attitude on London's transport network. The party was supposed to be a light hearted affair but soon developed into a 'boisterous' and rowdy drunken night, with numerous arrests, station closures, criminal damage and pools of vomit, nice! - ironically this might just show why the ban may have been called in the first place?

  • A party + booze + no loo's and no ventilation = a very scary commute on Monday morning. Yuk, I may get a bike.

  • The first, and perhaps last, occasion on which people made direct eye contact and spoke to each other on London public transport!

  • Makes the Tokyo Yamanote Halloween Train seem tame in comparison

  • Partying on the tube....who came up with that idiotic idea...what a crap night..!
  • Nah, the ban was called because Boris Johnson wanted something to do on his first day. And the party only followed because of the ban.

In all my life as a Londoner I've never seen trouble on the tube caused by alcohol imbibed on the trains. Pissed twats are pissed twats BEFORE they get on!

  • number1badboy - u dunt know!

If anything they should've converted one of the carriages into a bar, that way all the pissheads could be contained.

  • mightyhawkins has posted this article that blames Boris Johnson for the tube knees-up and the ensuing chaos that saw 500 people contained at Liverpool St station and I think at least 6 tube stops closed!

Union bosses reckon he should formally apologise to TFL staff who were assaulted and spat at.

  • Personally, I've never had any problems with drinking on the tube, I've only ever seen one incident on the tube, I'd like to see how many actual 'drink-related' incidents there have been and see what Boris is basing the ban on.

  • Throughout the history of human kind alcoholics have never reacted peacefully to any restriction of their drinking privileges.

Don't worry UK people, as soon as this dies down you'll be able to drink on the trains just like before, you'll just have to hide it a little bit.

  • I've not really seen a huge amount of trouble from people with drinks on the tube but I have a few times on the bus. I'm not confident it can really be policed effectively enough since there won't be staff on the trains or the buses apart from the drivers.

  • Well, I was there and it was generally a light hearted affair. When TFL, for whatever reason, kept tubes in tunnels for 35 minutes at about 10pm, then I think it kicked off in some places. Not on my carriage where people sang along to Rick Astley, drank champagne and copped off with each other.

It's a shame Boris thinks spending police resource on this and not knife crime is a good thing. Total publicity stunt and a case of 'peeing on lamposts'.

  • Wow.

Well done for proving the point of the ban. Its incredibly British to get pissed at any opportunity.

Check out this footage of the night.

Woman gets savaged by police dog. Nice.

  • I bet that if all those drunk assholes were smoking weed instead they would have gone home having had a good time and meeting new friends....no arrests,no violence, and no morning after hangovers.

  • That picture looks like a picture taken on a short bus than a subway or a tube.

Nothing like being extreme to prove banning it is such a bad idea. Let's get drunk, puke, cause a ruckus and that ought to prove how dumb it is to ban drinking.

    RIGHT ON!

  • I say Kudos to creative partying. The world needs more large-scale fun like this, where everyone comes together for a cause (or to just have a good time) without getting hurt. Way to go London!
