"Not much". Great article by Vanessa Richmond of the Tyee about how following "the Greek drama of celebrity life" is worth a thousand economy or environment stories, concluding that it's the critical fallout from sleb canards that really forms serious opinion and ethics.

I now appreciate that celebrity gossip can provide an accessible starting point for socio-political debate. However, these tabloid magazines also capitalize on the escapism and delusion of people wishing their lives were connected to the glamorous subjects. Or, they allow us to focus on the failures of a celebrity in order to dilute or ignore our own failures. However, the news hound should be aware that shaking your fist at Bill O'Reilly or G.W. Bush, isn't going to change anything either.
