Scientists are to be permitted to use tissue from dead people to create cloned human stem cells for research, under a legal change put forward by the government.
Health ministers have proposed that laboratories should be allowed to use stored human tissue to create cloned embryonic stem cells without the explicit consent of the tissue donor. This would allow research to be done on tissue donated for medical research as long as 30 years ago. Scientists would also be able to use cells from people who have died since they donated their tissue or who cannot be contacted.

Not only are we tampering with human DNA, but now we are on the verge of creating zombies! Stock up on your zombie repellent now before it's to late! Any scientific experimentation done without consent seems wrong.
-
Very creepy and very immoral especially without consent

So long as no moral boundaries are passed, which I predict will probably happen, I completely agree with stem cell research. It can cure many diseases and help many people. Of course this can be abused with use of clone armies, labor, new body parts because one wants stronger arms or fuller lips, and etc.

Hmm... Can they bring back Thomas Jefferson?! lol
-
Shouldn't they be cloning live vs dead tissue? You know just to avoid some kind of resident evil type thing from happening.

Jesus people, know your science.
They are using the dead cells to make STEM CELLS.
Not CLONES.
Read more than the damn headline. -
i think this is fine..! it could be used to make cures for hundred of diseases making life so hard for some people. As long as the tissue has been donated williningly, let them use it as they will.

Didn't Dr. Frankenstein reanimate dead tissue? All you need is love.

This might be a less controversial method to harvest stem cells than using embryonic ones. Check out this pod about the controversy.

So the creepy thing, maybe, is that they don't need to ask for permission before taking samples from dead people.
But apparently Noble Prize winners are saying that getting permission is sometimes impossible because obviously the donors have died, donated anonymously or their next of kin cannot be contacted. A ban could hold up their research. -
Hey if you're dead WTF do you care? In fact I'd give any of my cells now if I thought it would help anyone live a good meaningful life as I'm sure most would. God gave them to me to do with as I choose, you can't put the apple back on the tree, can you?

It seems there are some truly terrible misconceptions surrounding stem cell research. There is no possibility of scientists inadvertently creating zombies or cloned people - this is pure science fiction. Stem cells have the capacity to be the most useful tool ever developed for the field of medicine and with recent developments in the application of extracellular matrix, regenerative technology is making extraordinary progress. Human embryonic stem cells are the safest and most suitable type to be used for research as they remain pluripotent if created in vitro and can adapt to any person through nuclear transfer. To allow stem cells to achieve their potential (no pun intended) research must be carried out, and the main thing to remember here is that it is just research - we are a long way from being able to create entire people or synthesise whole body parts, even by accident.

Can we clone the founding fathers, so they can remind our current officials the meaning of the constitution?

We should clone brutal dictators and use them for medical and cosmetic testing. Instead of spraying monkeys in the face with cologne we could use Hitler. That way our world leader would think twice about screwing the people they are supposed to serve.
-
our bodies were given to us arbitrarily, so don't take it too personal. i think it's nice to be able to give a little something to those in need.
